Yesterday there was nothing in the headlines trying to push KS as some 'leader of free world', 'honest broker', or 'bridge' or other press release nonsense.

He's stuffed up with intervening so will likely go quiet on that one.

Plenty of domestic issues for us to talk about.

The welfare cuts are interesting on here given the support for other cuts. Cuts that are now swinging round to those who likely voted for them.

GrizzlyHairBear · 08/03/2025 12:14

It's a bit unfair to say that Starmer stuffed up with intervening. He and Macron were actually quite statesmanlike and tried. We need to remember who they are dealing with. That's the real reason it didn't work.

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 12:41

The pushing for security delayed the signing.

It'll likely get there this week, hopefully not irreparable, but not without extra cost.

In a normal world it would be perfectly logical to try to push for security. The issue is that I don't think anyone knew the true extent of ripping up the world order rule book when they took this course.

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 12:53

Why should US provide it @GrizzlyHairBear?

Why not Europe?

GrizzlyHairBear · 08/03/2025 13:02

I think Europe should be chipping in more but I also think USA should be in too. If Putin gets off lightly with this, there is a threat of instability much wider than Ukraine. It affects the world.

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 13:07

US will be in they just don't want to pick up security guarantee as wanted by Starmer and co.

Fair enough. If people call it a 'back stop' or security it amounts to troops on the ground if needed.

US voters have given mandate not to be the go to for Europeans on that front. Why should it be their dc?

Whose do you think it should be if needed @GrizzlyHairBear? Which troops should go to combat?

GrizzlyHairBear · 08/03/2025 13:41

If back up troops are needed, I think it should be across the board. Not one country's or another's. I think it's a combined effort.

I think it is a bit too simplistic to say that US voters have given their mandate not to...... That surely depends on the wider view of world stability and that is a constantly changing landscape so it is not a black and white snapshot picture.

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 14:08

@GrizzlyHairBear Europe have offered peacekeeper troops only.

And only if US commit to combat troops.

Why should EU leaders expect that?

GrizzlyHairBear · 08/03/2025 14:57

What are you talking about @EasternStandard. The request for security was for peacekeeping forces. Nobody is talking about American troops in combat. Even Conservative ministers are saying that Starmer played it all right. I don't understand all the negativity around it.

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 15:18

@GrizzlyHairBear if peacekeeping troops were enough for security then you've got them already, ie Europe. They are clearly not hence the ask for someone else to provide more than that.

Three leaders and a no each time.

The delay to signing due to pressuring for security has real impact.

Fingers crossed @TheNuthatch that it goes well

Parsley1234 · 12/03/2025 18:46

Well now I’m really worried about the potential for war reading a thread on the board earlier it has terrified me. Of course I can’t remember what it’s called I’ll try and find it - fuck sakes everything is bloody hard going booking shows for the year so bloody worried no one will be spending. My air band b had Contactors booked in it for 10 years Mon - Thurs they’ve been pulled due to Reeves bullshit tax grab £19 mill cost to tax payers the company can’t afford the extra £4mill a year to carry on I may of said this before

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/03/2025 19:07

Some posturing is inevitable and to be expected when there are talks about something as important as the ceasefire.
Both sides will be looking for ways to present it as victory, of some sorts.

EasternStandard · 12/03/2025 19:17

I was most worried when Starmer's poll bounce was in sync with war mongering / hawks on here even.

Lots of send others to fight stuff.

I feel like that's died down since Starmer isn't posturing as a 'bridge' or whatever, and I hope the other leaders have more sense over the Coalition of whatever.

I really hope we'll see some agreement as US travel to Russia now.

On another note I can't believe PMQs today and using family member to sell in welfare cuts. I mean I can given prior behaviour, but it's really craven politics. Not that I listen, just hearing about small parts is enough.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/03/2025 19:42

On the other hand I do question Trump’s wisdom of threatening Russia with economic devastation. It’s what they thrive on.
I do worry about the welfare cuts as well. I understand the system is bloated but it will hit so many who genuinely need support.
What a fucking mess everything is.

TheNuthatch · 12/03/2025 19:51

@Parsley1234
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you can find new tenants for your air bnb. This government are doing so much damage to businesses, mine included!

I watched PMQs today, and Kemi B did quite well. She went after Starmer on the damage they've done to businesses and farmers. It was good. Starmer had no answers of course to all the businesses closing and cutting staff, Reeves nodding along beside him.
@EasternStandard He did try and spin his own family background again when talking about the upcoming benefits cuts. Self serving slimy fucker.
At least he's stopped pretending to be Trump's best mate now that he's been made a fool of. Bridge my arse!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/03/2025 19:54

I missed PMQ.

Too busy working my arse off.

Edit - sorry, didn’t mean to offend anyone. Just tired and pissed off with everything.

EasternStandard · 12/03/2025 19:54

Ah @TheNuthatch your post made me laugh and summed up how I feel on both things.

Tf for this thread, exactly what a slimy fucker

Odious too

I'm a strange creature in that I am a conservative to my bones, but I hate benefit bashing. I grew up poor, up north, and I haven't forgotten.
I'm sure there are thousands taking the piss with benefits, but they won't be the ones who suffer. They'll just find a new loophole. The ones who will suffer are those in genuine need.

True.
Grifters are going to grift. The vulnerable are going to pay for it.

I met Tony Newton a couple of times through a previous job and i dont think he would align himself now with either the Tories (which was his party) or Labour

Parsley1234 · 12/03/2025 20:15

I had to work for the government in Covid as my three businesses went into the ether. I have never in my life seen such waste such ineptitude such apathy in my life it was truly jaw dropping. The bloody companies on the make it’s disgusting and because most civil servants are not business savvy they just don’t get it they don’t know how to be productive or to call out wrongness. In the end I was signed off with PTSD and that was that

Yes, agree with this. I suppose I am a bit Newton-ish, on this subject at least.
