Yes, it's probably going to be as good as it's going to get for Ukraine and hopefully it will end this game of political chicken.

And I know people will say it isn't fair or just but aggressively shaking your fist that somebody needs to help you only has so much leverage.

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 17:39

Thanks ES.
That's quite a climb down from Z. No doubt Starmer will try and take credit for it.
Let's see if it's enough for Trump.

He'll definitely try to take credit.

A bit hard to sound like a 'bridge' when you don't even know a huge statement is incoming and proclaim the direction of travel is somewhere else.

Hopefully this a step to next stage.

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 18:18

Kemi B is the only leader not to condemn Vance for his vile comments. She said he was misinterpreted. Er no Kemi, he was not!
Even Farage has had a go at Vance ffs.
The sooner she goes, the better.

If there was any doubt about how we were going to fund this additional defence spending, Rachel Reeves is planning 'efficiencies'.

Meanwhile, unsurprisingly, the French have landed on wealth taxes.

Upstartled · 04/03/2025 19:26

Looks like the mineral deal might be signed tonight.

It's weird isn't it, waking up to morning news that makes the news you watched on the evening redundant?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/03/2025 19:27

Kemi is the wrong here.

Kemi is the wrong here.

Yes it is wrong. If Kemi is schmoozing then she should take a leaf out of Mandelson's book and do it away from the camera.

Did you get your fancy pancake? I was almost inspired but impatience got the better of me and went with golden syrup.

No.

I was out working all
day and am knackered. There’s always next year.

Now DD is making Nigella’s ricotta pancakes.

Or I might go to a retro French place and order some, but then it’s so embarrassing when they faff around with them at your table and everyone is pretending hard not to watch!

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 19:50

Chardonnay, can I come to yours next shrove Tuesday please?
I finally got some eggs and lemons so the pancakes have been eaten.
I ended up making 24 pancakes!!!!! It's like feeding a zoo here 😂

Good, fingers crossed.

Yes it is weird. The newspapers were obsolete by the time we all woke up this morning. Strange times.

Times Radio just said they'd have coverage at 2am

It took me back to the US election, we were listening until about 6am

Won't stay up tonight though

If we’re not all on a front line somewhere in the deepest Urals then you are more than welcome!

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat with some sort of solar apparatus strapped to our backs to keep net zero going.

I was just reading an article which stated KS knew in advance aid would be halted

He didn't given the answer in the Commons on the direction of travel.

Are they putting out false press releases?

That's a lie.
He was asked directly by Stephen Flynn in the house. Starmer didn't just deny all knowledge, he specifically said that was not the position of the US.

OP posts:
EasternStandard · 05/03/2025 08:02

Thanks @TheNuthatch it's incredible that a lie is being spun by the gov in an attempt to save face and keep political capital going.

In all the noise he may avoid scrutiny. He's not a broker, bridge or whatever else.

He didn't know the direction of travel and is now lying.

Upstartled · 05/03/2025 08:06

At the risk of being dense - it the lie that he knew aid would be cut and misled the house of commons or that he didn't know that aid would be cut and is now lying that he did to save face?

EasternStandard · 05/03/2025 08:10

It has to be one or the other

If I'm guessing I'd say the lie is after to save face.

But he should be asked directly if he knew, and if he says yes then ask if Commons was a lie.

TheNuthatch · 05/03/2025 08:16

Flynn has been having fun with it all over SM.

Good on him. The reality is likely KS is posturing on being any kind of broker as it plays well.

He didn't know a crucial element of something he's suggesting he's at the centre of. Bluster and spin.

To follow on from this article, Sky are also reporting that billions of spending going cuts, including from welfare, are being put forward to the OBR ready for the spring statement.

Belarus has offered to host peace talks.
Lukashenko, somehow making an invitation look incredibly aggressive - maybe something lost in translation?

From the telegraph:

"Tell Trump that I expect him here with [Vladimir] Putin and [Volodymyr] Zelensky,” he said.

Belarus is currently under US and European sanctions over its support for Russia’s military action in Ukraine and a government crackdown on the opposition.

But the 70-year-old president went on: “We are going to sit down and calmly make an accord, if you want to make an accord.”

Lukashenko said there had to be an accord with the Ukrainian president “since a large part of Ukrainian society is with him.”

Urging Zelensky to attend, he added: “There is only 200 kilometres (125 miles) between the Belarus frontier and Kyiv.

“Half an hour in a plane. Come.”

EasternStandard · 05/03/2025 09:18

Might be translation, but interesting, thanks for update
