Ursula VDL has this morning announced a 5 point re armourment plan for EU.

It's March FFS and Trump won the election in November! WTF have they been doing.

The EU remind me of the Ents from lord of the rings. It takes them years to even think about discussing anything.

Yes, meetings about having a meeting. Very apt. If deflating.

We know the cost of that. The Kurdish territories. Will Putin play along?

I think Turkey hates Russia enough to give it a go! Haven't they recently announced a truce with the Kurds? I need to up my reading on this.

Turkey would be mad to commit their army, it's nowhere near them.

Honestly Europe like to look strong and elevated but totally committed to trying to send other people.

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 10:54

Trump has his state of the union address later today. It's been rumoured for a while that he will withdraw something like 20% troops out of Europe. Will we also see removal of Russian sanctions? That seems more likely now.

Poland confirming that the US did not consult any Nato allies before the pause.
There doesn't seem to be any change of rhetoric from the UK government. AR still going on about US security guarantees this morning.

It’s not going to be pretty tonight.

EasternStandard · 04/03/2025 11:12

I'm not sure what Starmer and co are holding out for.

It's been stated US security is needed and it's not happening, so why keep the pics on the steps performance going.

I wonder what's stalling Z too

Upstartled · 04/03/2025 11:49

I don't know. At the moment the plan seems amount to a wish list of what they'll do if Trump continues to support the Ukraine - while Trump couldn't be trying harder to demonstrate his lack of interest.

It's like watching someone plan the wedding while the partner is changing the locks after failing to get the key back.

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 11:55

@Upstartled

Excellent analogy

JD Vance, referring to UK/France peacekeeping force as '20,000 troops from some random country that hasn't fought a war in 30 or 40 year'.

Good strong response from James Cartlidge (shadow defence) reminding the US that Article5 has only been invoked once, by the US after 9/11. UK and France deployed thousands and lost hundreds of troops. 'it's deeply disrespectful to ignore such service and sacrifice'.

Strong rebuttal from the Lib Dems too.

Upstartled · 04/03/2025 12:37

Didn't Vance fight in the Iraq war?

Not that that means he can shoot his mouth off but I don't think you could safely assume it's an omission of poor memory.

Edited

Yes I think he did serve in Iraq.

Vance is now claiming that he was not referring to the UK or France when he made those comments. Twat

My entire knowledge of Vance is limited to Hillbilly Elegy, but preet sure that was in there!

I hate him too much to read it, I'm impressed that you have!
Just googled it, Vance served 6 months in Iraq as a military journalist.

Oh no, I watched the movie while I had the flu. It's part real - part fever.

He is behaving like a twat. I'm not sure it's accidental.

Upstartled · 04/03/2025 13:12

It's definitely pushing the tariff fallout down the news reels.

TheNuthatch · 04/03/2025 13:31

Just a reminder that today is pancake day. I didn't realise until 5 minutes ago and I have no eggs 😂

Oh no, you'll have to assume the sharp elbow pose when you go to the shops.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/03/2025 13:40

Looking forward to some pancakes tonight.

Sugar and lemon and some lemon zest. Keep meaning to make Crepes Suzette, properly nostalgic, but so far never have.

I had to Google crepes suzette 😂
Sounds amazing.

I'll be having biscoff spread and banana on mine.
Kids will have nutella and strawberries, dh will have lemon and sugar.
That's if I can find some eggs and a lemon after work!

I watched Delia Smith make them once and keep thinking about them every Shrove Tuesday.

EasternStandard · 04/03/2025 14:46

Pancakes are certainly a more pleasant addition to the sunny day than some of the other threads

Tg for this one!

Zelenskyy has made a statement. Likely a step closer to signing the deal as it is.
