Lucy Letby press conference

There is a press conference going on now trying to get Lucy Letby's conviction overturned. From what I read the guilty verdict was sound. All those ill babies dying when she was alone with them. Just a coincidence? Already been refused an appeal.

Press conference has finished. I'm still not convinced about the grounds for a retrial. She confessed in a diary type entry found at her flat

What about the babies that died when she wasn't on duty? There are more holes in the evidence used to convict than a sponge. That's not to say I think she's innocent- I haven't heard enough to decide either way as I wasn't on the jury.

JimHalpertsWife · 04/02/2025 12:02

Aren't they now saying she wasn't on shift for a third of the deaths?

Some babies in NICU will always die, sadly. Doesn't mean she didn't give many of them a helping hand.

TheWonderstuff · 04/02/2025 12:04

Doesn't mean she did either @TallulahBetty

Well the initial trial showed that she did. She can't appeal on the grounds that very poorly babies happened to die when she wasn't there

MotherOfCatBoy · 04/02/2025 12:05

It’s worth reading the “MD” column articles in Private Eye about this - he has done 12 instalments now on the medical evidence. Seems a lot of it is contradictory and some was not used at trial.
I don’t have an opinion either way on her guilt or innocence but I do think we need to have a more thorough justice system.

This isn’t the smoking gun you think it is as it’s since come out she was advised to write these sort of things by her therapist, a relatively common tactic apparently and was accompanied by various “I am innocent” scrawlings etc.

I’m not saying I think she’s innocent but I think the baying mob who are just screaming “she’s a child killer, you wouldn’t be saying this if she was black” and refusing to consider the possibility it may be a miscarriage of justice are really not helping the situation.

A lot of mentally ill / depressed people write stuff in diaries they don’t really mean, things like “I an evil” etc are relatively common things to find. Even her supposed admission of guilt might be her feeling guilty as if she had done it but in reality maybe she hadn’t. I’m really not sure about any of it. I feel desperately sorry for the families involved.

No she didn't.

notanothernamechange24 · 04/02/2025 12:18

I think a lot of people want to believe she's guilty. Not because she is or even because facts point that way (which they don't) but because believing that someone did this and someone is at fault is easier than the probable truth - that these were very very poorly babies and died of natural causes.

cheeseandcoleslaw · 04/02/2025 12:24

Just seen this. So what the hell does this mean then ? No medical evidence of the babies being intentionally harmed, does that mean a retrial?

MissyB1 · 04/02/2025 12:39

I don't usually comment on these threads but dh is a hospital consultant and has always said that he didn't understand how any of the "medical evidence" was proof of murder. Not saying it wasn't murder, or that she's innocent (only she knows if she harmed those babies or not), but was there proof "beyond reasonable doubt", lots of medics think not.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 04/02/2025 12:42

Horrific for LL if true. What happens now?

TooOldForThisShit1 · 04/02/2025 12:44

I never ever thought it passed the burden of proof. Dreadful for everyone involved. I hope the families and LL get justice

babymamalove · 04/02/2025 12:46

How do we explain then that somebody working there was poisoning some of the babies with insulin?

And the injections of air.....

Me too.

It looks like it's a huge miscarriage of justice and I am glad experts are now starting to really question it.

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/02/2025 12:51

Wow it's all very concerning

Why do all these people want to jump on the case to prove her innocence? What is their gain?

notanothernamechange24 · 04/02/2025 12:51

@paulyispoorly there is no proof for the injections of air theory. That's the point.

The insulin evidence was always shaky. She wasn't on-site at the time for some of it too if I remember correctly.
The whole thing is an utter shit show.

I feel terrible for the parents and families whose lives have been turned upside down again. But equally if she is innocent then Letbys life has been ruined too

dumpydumpydumpdump · 04/02/2025 12:56

The insulin evidence is addressed by the panel at the press conference. It was based on adult/child ratios. Not neonate.
I was always surprised the jury convicted so quickly as the evidence was never great. Now much indeed all of that has been totally discredited - I don't think she did any of it.

The senior nurses originally thought she was being persecuted by the doctors. Looks like they were right. What a mess

LeMoo · 04/02/2025 12:57

It was only a matter of time before there were calls for a retrial.

Horrific for Letby but also horrific for the parents and relatives of the babies who were harmed & killed, who don't yet have justice.

The case also seems like it will have significant repercussions for how complex scientific evidence is presented and tested in a court of law.

dumpydumpydumpdump · 04/02/2025 12:58

If her conviction is overturned there won't be retrial. The evidence doesn't exist!

MinistryofThyme · 04/02/2025 13:00

I don’t know a single doctor who is convinced that she’s guilty, and I know a lot of doctors.

That note was not a confession. I think it’s appalling it was allowed to be used in the media with absolutely no context provided.
