Lucy Letby press conference

Viviennemary · 04/02/2025 10:27

There is a press conference going on now trying to get Lucy Letby's conviction overturned. From what I read the guilty verdict was sound. All those ill babies dying when she was alone with them. Just a coincidence? Already been refused an appeal.

yet another waste of taxpayer money on this creature. I believe she’s as guilty as sin and where she needs to be.

That’s OK then. Cancel the press conferences Hmm

That may be how you feel, and you may actually turn out to be right. But what are you basing this assertion on? People that are experts in the relevant fields believe there are grounds to call the conviction unsafe. Do you think she should remain in prison for the rest of her life because of your belief, your hunch?

ThatsNotMyTeen · 04/02/2025 13:57

If only there had been some sort of forum where the medical evidence rebutting the crown case could have been put forward. Like, I dunno, a 9 month trial with a taxpayer funded defence led by Kings Counsel?

Naepalz · 04/02/2025 13:58

I feel so desperately sorry for the families of the babies. As someone whose 9 month old premature daughter died suddenly and unexpectedly in a neonatal unit many years ago, I understand some of what they have gone through.
However for these poor parents to first be told that their babies' deaths were from natural causes, then that they had been murdered by Letby and now that it might have been natural causes after all, or even possibly poor clinical care is horrific.

A child dying is in my opinion the worst experience a parent can have and for the questions into your child's death to just keep going on an on must be unbearably hard. How can they ever even try and move o
n with their lives when there seems to be no end to this?

I have no idea if Letby is innocent or not but there does appear to be reasonable grounds for questioning the safety of her conviction. It is necessary for someone to be proved guilty beyond reasonable doubt and it doesn't look like her conviction meets that test.

I can assure you, locking her up for life in a maximum security prison will use up a lot more of your taxpayer cash than the alternative on the table here.

chouxchoux · 04/02/2025 13:59

And FWIW nothing about this press conference was funded by the taxpayer.

The fact she was convicted after 9 month trial, had an expensive taxpayer funded defence, and 2 appeals.

Obviously guilty and I agree with the people who say it's offensive and distressing to the parents of the victims to imply otherwise.

Edited

Do you think it was offensive to the families of the people who died in the Birmingham pub bombings to raise questions about whether the men who were convicted of the bombings were actually guilty?

Who funds the CCRC ?

You mean like that for Sally Clark?

ThisFluentBiscuit · 04/02/2025 13:33

And the fact that she was caught with her hands in the crib by the mother, harming one of them, and the fact that one of the babies she was assigned to look after had injuries that were akin to having been in a car crash.

Her trial was nine months long and was as thorough as could possibly be. I do not think that all those incredibly bright people presenting evidence against her were wrong.

Edited

What harm was she doing at that time. What injuries are you referring to?

But that’s the price we have to pay to keep
dangerous people away from society. Not endless appeals and bites of the cherry
when she’s lost every previous attempt

chilliismyhero · 04/02/2025 14:01

What concerns me is this is going to be yet another stir on social media that gets inflated with loads of uniformed opinions and conspiracy theories, and ultimately reduces people's trust in institutions even more. Watch Musk and Farage jump on this and somehow use it to spin their sorry tales and promote the populist cause. Regardless of the actual truth of the case.

Mmm, I don't know why anyone thinks their feelz are relevant here. Whatever they might be.

TuesdayRubies · 04/02/2025 14:01

The people who won't have her conviction questioned because it's 'offensive to the victims' are basically medieval in mindset, aren't they? They want a villain to blame, and even if they are innocent, they don't care.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/02/2025 14:02

I would encourage everyone who doesn’t understand the evidence to watch the press conference in full. Shoo Lee is an excellent communicator and makes it all very clear and easy to understand.

The price of ensuring we only lock up dangerous people is more appeals if additional information comes to light.

Why is she obviously guilty when the new evidence says no crime was committed. Guilty of what?

Are you implying that thousands of girls were not raped by grooming gangs and had their experiences ignored or dismissed by those in position to help them?

CorduroySituation · 04/02/2025 13:43

But they weren't all "very very poorly". This is just false.

Several were quoted as thriving, being well on the way to being released from the unit, doing well, when they had "sudden unexpected collapses".

Yes but unfortunately with this population sudden collapses do happen unexpectedly.
My friends daughter was in the NICU for a very long time and they were gearing up for discharge with visits home etc. when she unexpectedly passed away. She had been on pass home only 2 days before and they were hoping for full discharge home in the next week or two.

Yeah, it is.

I'm not saying Letby is innocent or not, I don't know. But the existence of miscarriages of justice despite lengthy trials is clearly relevant to anyone saying she had a trial and was found guilty.

TallulahBetty · 04/02/2025 14:05

MinistryofThyme · 04/02/2025 13:00

I don’t know a single doctor who is convinced that she’s guilty, and I know a lot of doctors.

That note was not a confession. I think it’s appalling it was allowed to be used in the media with absolutely no context provided.

I know 3 doctors, all of whom think she is guilty. So what now?

It is not relevant that the courts (and appeal courts) can get things wrong??
