Ways to not buy American

I know the obvious brands that are fast food, fizzy drinks etc but I'm not sure about the overarching companies that are American owned and brands that I might miss.
It might be a small and solo protest but I'm determined.

You'll have to avoid these brands...

And many more. Nothing is British owned anymore!

But your local McDonald’s will almost certainly be owned by a local business person, and will likely be how they feed their children. Are you willing to impact their livelihood on the off chance that the US might feel the impact amongst their global income of which the UK will make up a small percentage?

ETA: I don’t mean they feed their children McDonald’s, I mean the profits fund their weekly shop 😂

The items that you can switch to might also be "owned by a local business person, and will likely be how they feed their children". McDonalds may be franchise based, but it's ridiculous to describe going there as supporting a small business on this account. It's also awful processed food and should be avoided on that score.

Everything is literally owned by Vanguard/Blackrock etc

Whistler or the Alps rather than Tahoe or Vail

Caribbean rather than California or Florida

Israeli security software rather than American brands

Samsung rather than Apple

And it's no sacrifice at all to avoid American food, cars or TV 😁

The Caribbean gets most, if not all, of its imports from the US. You wouldn’t be able to buy anything while you were there…

I'm looking through MrsJHernandez post and I can opt out of some but MS and Google are work, Amazon I can if think hard but FB and WhatsApp are really difficult as FB is where I pick up ad-hoc work and WhatsApp to talk to my children.

I can have an opinion as to where my money is spent, I choose not to support through my money regimes that are not aligned with my thoughts, a regime that has cancelled all foreign aid is not a regime I wish to give any money to.

I'm on a Samsung but my work phone is Apple so I've absolutely nowhere to go on the phone thing.

The UK actually exports more to the US than vice versa. In 2023 we imported 57.9billion of goods (10% of our total) and exported 60.4 billion to the US (15% of our total). Services follow the same pattern. We imported 57.4 billion of services from the US (19.5% of our total) and exported 126.3 billion (27% of our total).

Better stop doing anything that relies on oil and gas, which would rule out most transportation and use of plastic just to be safe. The article below states that the UK buys £19.3 billion worth of fossil fuels from authoritarian states.

Us / uk trade is pretty balanced, actually. And interestingly both countries report a trade surplus with each other due to differences in how statistics are reported.

ASDA hasn't been owned by Walmart for a good number of years!! And it was always a British Supermarket when it started

Yes, it struck me that that is actually quite a close balance - I was merely responding to some rather foolish assertions, presumably by an American, that the UK exports nothing to the US. What I do find striking is that the figures are as they are considering how much bigger the US is than the UK

Your non American car will have US manufactured parts in it.

But Kellogg and Mondelez manufacture in the UK as do others so we are only damaging our own economy then.
