Ways to not buy American

I know the obvious brands that are fast food, fizzy drinks etc but I'm not sure about the overarching companies that are American owned and brands that I might miss.
It might be a small and solo protest but I'm determined.

I've been boycotting Amazon for about 10 years because it was so massively profitable, because it undercut high street shops and local businesses, and because it treated employees unfairly. It hasn't worked....

I still feel better about myself though. Whatever makes you feel you have some bit of power is good. Reading this thread I'm starting to think 'globalisation' of the past 20 years means 'americanisation'. It's actually mad how much we rely on US owned business

Conkerjar · 04/03/2025 23:26

In terms of non food stuff, secondhand where possible is a double win since it's better for the planet and 🍊 doesn't believe in climate change. Drinks wise, might be worth looking at tasty fancy cordials at the supermarket. I haven't checked any labels, so I might be wrong, but I imagine you'd be able to get something that's not USA produced at least. Best thing to do is look at what you regularly purchase and work out nice swaps that you can start to add in.

I'm on a Samsung but my work phone is Apple so I've absolutely nowhere to go on the phone thing.
I know I have ridiculously limited power but I want to just be more mindful.

great thinking!

also why not buy up some flags of all the other nations that are currently at war and boycott whoever is against them? Fly the flags at your home and online too! Once you’ve chosen a side of course. As long as it’s the same side as everyone else in your social circle too.

Everything is literally owned by Vanguard/Blackrock etc

This. You could know someone that is renting their home from them these days.

Ah, the noble art of economic defiance a small, solo protest against the behemoth that is American capitalism. But let’s not kid ourselves. You can try to avoid the golden arches, shun the fizzy drinks, and turn your back on the star-spangled conglomerates, but America doesn’t just sell you products it sells you the very system in which you operate.

Your phone? Likely designed in California then made elseware. Your software? Developed in Silicon Valley. Your entertainment? Pumped straight from Hollywood into your living room. Even if you manage to dodge direct purchases, the financial systems, supply chains, and global markets still hum to an American tune.

So, go ahead, draw your little lines in the sand. Just know that while you refuse to buy American, America has already sold you the game itself.

I never think about this. How depressing.

😆 at us Brits/Europeans having our entertainment 'pumped straight from Hollywood'- some of us are a bit more discerning and are keen to remain intelligent free agents; equipped to participate in democratic society. America’s entertainment ethos - it's excessive consumerism and abounding cynicism are certainly not a given in UK society, we can see how that is playing out where you are.

Goldenbear · 05/03/2025 07:01

Its not it's

Pairymoppins · 05/03/2025 07:10

If there was consensus around a boycott of the same few US companies it would still have an impact. I get the point, which has been repeatedly, that a total boycott of US goods and services is impossible. But could we all hit Amazon and say one or two key others I wonder? Which companies should they be?

@JadededViewer didnt say where she was from? But their point is a good one re the systems put in place, your niche not involved in anyway with the USA on demand tv service, is probably running on an American companies server. the bbc website is run on AWS. Boycotting on an individual level won’t do much in a lot of cases because of @JadededViewer point, we can all boycott the shopping side of Amazon but they will still thrive because of AWS. the world has just sleep walked into America providers providing an insane amount of services that keep the world running and it puts us in a position where you can’t really boycott them apart from on an entirely surface level

BourbonsAreOverated · 05/03/2025 07:40

I’m doing the same op.
just trying to be more mindful of where it all comes from.
I obviously have zero power, but the guys a prick. A dangerous prick.
We’ve worked hard for our money and would sooner give it to a country that has our back rather than one who calls us random and forgets how many of our army died when we had their back.

Thank you - been looking for a list. It’s hard not using Amazon, and it’s difficult to source products. Where possible we need to try!!

They don't need to state where they are from, it is the U.S. centric tone (i.e. we are the best and biggest) that is the give away and the 'beamed from Hollywood' remarks, the arrogant assumption that we are all brainwashed, passive viewers, eager to only consume the superior American culture, rejecting our own!

So your answer to these alarming developments is passive indifference is it, don't you think that is how a reality TV star got to be the American President!

ThatHardyTealDuck · 05/03/2025 08:02

You could start by researching parent companies behind brands, as many non-American-sounding brands are actually owned by US. corporations.

We read it differently then

I didn’t say indifference is the answer. but I do think individual boycott of amazon is pointless, if people want to do it more power to them but it will make zero impact, as aws holds it up, which the entire world uses, our government, our websites, our apps, so I do think we need to look deeper on a national level. I think our focus should be as a nation deentangling ourselves from the sheer reliance we have on the USA (and Chinese) services, as currently we literally cannot exist without them I think it will be a long long process of developing businesses, government intervention etc years and years down the line that helps us break the reliance we have on America and China, as the jada post said, it’s not really the goods that are the problem, but all the services we rely on, it leaves us on a nation level with very little boycotting power.

seriouslyfunny · 05/03/2025 14:44

I completely agree with you that our Government needs to become more self-reliant in our tech and systems. Whatever you think about China, they have kept all their information systems and social media China-owned and with tight regulation for a reason. Yet our politicians seem to be in complete denial. The US may not be our enemy yet but they are definitely no longer a friend. We need to recognise that and start protecting ourselves.

And regarding boycotting, I will carry on with mine. The more my money goes to tax-paying businesses the better, and if they are independent local businesses even better.

You're safe wuth asda.. Walmart flogged it back to a uk holding a few years back.
Better to go with lidl / aldi to help fund a new german army or go m&s or waitrose to keep our home grown rich folk in skiing holidays

Luddite26 · 05/03/2025 21:37

Walmart still have a stake in Asda despite it being sold to the Issa brothers who own the EG garages.

larissajo · 06/03/2025 18:58

About time this changed then. Do our best to avoid American products so more money goes in to,Brit and then more production. They’ll get the point . Let’s at least try to cut out 50%. We will probably all feel better in long run too. I already fee better not on Facebook. Was contemplating letting go of apple phone too. The food and clothing imported from USA need to go. X

SwedishSoup · 08/03/2025 00:36

Hi. Re boycotting American profucts/ firms. Apparently Walmart doesn't own Asda anymore. It is difficult but we could all try not purchasing one or two brands..
