Ways to not buy American

Scissor · 03/02/2025 17:23

I know the obvious brands that are fast food, fizzy drinks etc but I'm not sure about the overarching companies that are American owned and brands that I might miss.
It might be a small and solo protest but I'm determined.

Yes, it struck me that that is actually quite a close balance - I was merely responding to some rather foolish assertions, presumably by an American, that the UK exports nothing to the US. What I do find striking is that the figures are as they are considering how much bigger the US is than the UK

Not really surprising - the US cannot export more than the smaller number of UK consumers can buy?

That doesn’t really ring true when you look at the countries the US mostly exports to - many have far smaller populations than the UK. With some, it’s pretty obvious why they would be high up on the States’ export list eg. where they are geographically, but overall, the no of imports and exports with the UK does not seem to be proportional to size.

Your non American car will have US manufactured parts in it.

Wow. Some will have some parts. Hardly world leaders

By far the biggest destination of US exports is Mexico and Canada, which reflects integrated supply chains (the auto industry commonly will have factories in all three countries) rather than finished products. The nature of UK -US trade will be different, though. It looks like the US is the largest single country destination for UK exports (EU collectively the biggest), and as a proportion of exports the UK will be much more dependent on the US than vice versa. The UK is much more likely to feel the pain from any trade war, even if not directly targeted by tariffs.

I'm on a Samsung but my work phone is Apple so I've absolutely nowhere to go on the phone thing.
I know I have ridiculously limited power but I want to just be more mindful.

What are you being mindful about and why?

Getangryalot · 07/02/2025 10:53

American things/stuff are mostly avoidable by buying locally, I suppose. But most of the Internet is impossible isn't it? It's scary how people's lives are ruled by a madman in the US, a psychotic war monger in Israel and the banks. No alternative - reinvigorate the high street, start up local newspapers and use cash! I was so hopeful in my youth that the world was opening up and that people liked and were interested in one another. But now? I despair. I wouldn't have children nowadays - what would we be subjecting them to? 😥I'll continue to boycott - it's the only way for a minnow to make their opinion known.

For what it's worth, I'm looking for ways of cutting down my consumption of American tech/goods.

ByMerryKoala · 07/02/2025 12:00

Absolutely ridiculous.

So all these companies, op. The ones making us obese and sick ( fast food and junk food) the ones killing the high street (online shopping) the ones making our children's lives increasingly difficult and risky (social media)

....and NOW you feel compelled to have a little solo protest?

Huckyfell · 07/02/2025 12:04

I would rather buy American than Chinese. Unfortunately neither is a possibility to live a normal life and survive.. so either become a hermit with a vegetable patch and a cow, or just live life without worrying.
Although I would never buy a Tesla or Chinese car.

You'll have to avoid these brands...

Microsoft
Apple
Google
Amazon
Netflix
Ebay
Uber
Procter & Gamble
Coca-Cola
Kellogg’s
Colgate
Pepsi
Disney
All USA films
TV shows
Facebook
Instagram
WhatsApp
Twitter
Air BnB
Sky
Hotel Chocolat
AmEx
Cadbury
Walkers
Heinz
HP sauce
OXO
Batchelor's
Hartley's Jam
Kraft
Mondelez (Eg Terry's chocolate orange)
Asda (Walmart)

And many more. Nothing is British owned anymore!

Need to start by reducing consumption of those goods and moving to European or British ones. Also re tech companies, move from Amazon to Argos, Waterstones or similar for at least some purchases.

Lurkingandlearning · 07/02/2025 12:25

Visa and Mastercard are American so that’s your debit cards not just credit cards

I think most of the NHS services that have been farmed out (can’t think of right word) are run by American companies - mammograms, 111, SDECS. Probably many more.

The Caribbean gets most, if not all, of its imports from the US. You wouldn’t be able to buy anything while you were there…

The French Caribbean doesn't! Almost all of it comes from France....

Presumably because she doesn’t like Trump? Boo Hoo.

But Kellogg and Mondelez manufacture in the UK as do others so we are only damaging our own economy then.

That’s a good point.

it would be interesting to know what we can buy that comes from solely British owned companies.

SlapTheMelon · 07/02/2025 12:36

impossible. And people who said but X is made in the UK. But they use American tech in their office/manufacturing plant.

And If you want to be so morally superior you should also avoid Chinese made. And that will mean throwing everything you own and start building a hut and live like a caveman.

Greenfinch7 · 07/02/2025 12:38

Do you want to support China? Israel?

Menopants · 07/02/2025 12:38

Scissor · 03/02/2025 18:39

I can have an opinion as to where my money is spent, I choose not to support through my money regimes that are not aligned with my thoughts, a regime that has cancelled all foreign aid is not a regime I wish to give any money to.

I really hear what you are saying but it’s impossible. Name a regime you can support?

I want to support israel- I'm sure to always buy Israeli products when I see them.

People's lives are ruled "by a psychotic war monger in Israel"? Do you mean Sinwar? He's dead now. He wasn't really ruling people's lives in the uk tho. Maybe take your meds.

Most of the "American" companies given by previous posters are listed on the stock exchange. That means their shares are likely owned by you via your pension fund. Eg my pension tells me what some of my underlying investments are - they include Apple and Amazon.

So you're probably boycotting yourself

user243245346 · 07/02/2025 14:03

Iloveyoubut · 03/02/2025 18:20

Everything is literally owned by Vanguard/Blackrock etc

Vanguard and black rock are both investment funds though. Whoever owns the funds (hundreds of millions if not billions of consumers globally) actually owns the shares

GermanBite · 07/02/2025 14:17

Out of interest, which other countries' products do you boycott?

GermanBite · 07/02/2025 14:18

You may need to stop taking prescribed medicines - the US has a lot of pharma.

Relaxaholic · 07/02/2025 14:19

Almost impossible to achieve if you use any form of technology. And then the alternatives would be Chinese and they aren’t exactly saints!
