Anyone discovered an affair after an accident?

ifelttheearth · 02/02/2025 23:42

I recently watched a TV programme about a woman who found out her husband was having an affair after he'd been involved in a serious accident which also involved his affair partner. She thought he was away on business.

Has this happened to anyone in real life?

How shocking it must be and you must have so many questions in your head!

About 20yrs ago I was on a sailing holiday, 4 or 5 little boats in a flotilla around some mediterranean islands. One of our crew was late forties/early fifties and was with his work colleague in her 30s. The rest of us are in our 20s and don’t bother questioning this…
Until, he has an accident. I call his wife from hospital and mention that I will leave my mobile phone there for him to stay in touch with her - and when his ‘colleague’ comes to visit him tomorrow after he’s stayed in a night, she will return my phone and he can use hers if needed.

I was oblivious to the unwitting can of whoopass opened. Needless to say, when I returned to the UK and asked him if he could contribute to the phone bill he’d racked up, or claim it on his health insurance for me, I got shot as the messenger. Twat still owes me £60 and I hope he still has the scars on every level.

A family friend (who was the long-term OW) - her 'lover' had a heart attack (and died) when they were together and that's how his wife found out.

FusionChefGeoff · 03/02/2025 14:12

Someone at work found out when she asked the travel team what time the flight for xxx work trip landed as 'D'H had been away for a few days and she wanted to know when to expect him back.... only to be told there was no flight from xx as no work trip booked that week.

In the past I've driven to old haunts, places where an ex lived or where I hang out with an ex etc. Nothing local to me now at all. Not interested in the ex or seeing them. It was just me re-living my youth, a time when I was slim and the only thing that mattered was that evening's outfit. No idea how I would explain to DH where I was if I ever had an accident or broke down. Fortunately that never happened.

SchoolDilemma17 · 03/02/2025 14:14

I knew someone, married in the 70ies/80ies. He worked late in a nearby town, she raised the kids. He had a stroke and was bed bound and couldn’t communicate anymore. His lover showed up as she hadn’t heard from him. Turned out he didn’t always work late but had an affair for years and years. Don’t think his wife was a devoted caree after finding out and he never managed to explain or apologise as he couldn’t talk much anymore.

Some years ago a man in the UK who was having an affair took his baby to meet his mistress and let go of the pram handle to kiss her.
The pram rolled into the sea and the baby drowned.
Doesn’t get more horrific than that 🥲

OMG that’s terrible!

I wonder if it's worth posting on here as it's rare that an OP doesn't get some sort of criticism.

It was just a question as a conversation starter. Lots of people do it!

I'm now having to keep saying that I'm not a journalist!

Report me, or simply don't comment if you think I am!!!!

Unbelievable isn't it? People seem to spoil for a fight for no reason, deranged in my view.

I remember in the 1980s when automatic speed cameras were introduced in the country where I was living at the time. They sent you a photo of the front of the car so you could see who was driving. But this photo also included the front seat passenger, and if the driver's spouse saw the letter they tended to ask awkward questions about who was in the front seat with their partner, 20 miles from the office and 3 miles from a motel at 2pm on a weekday. After a few months and a lot of complaints they started blurring the passenger side...

There were also stories after 9/11 of people surviving who should have been at work on the exact floor where one of the planes hit, because they were in fact at their lover's apartment instead of work that morning. But I don't know if any of these were ever verified.

Edited

Where I am they take the picture from the back now to protect a persons privacy. 🙈

An acquaintance found out her husband was having an affair after he crashed the car whilst drunk driving with other woman in the car. She wasted no time in getting rid of him.

Oh God yes, this story was all over our local news and eventually the daily mail.
A woman was round at her "male friend's" house when she slipped off the toilet and "landed" on the toilet brush handle which went up her bum, snapped off and disappeared

Awful tragedy but why all the inverted commas? Nothing to suggest there was anything untoward going on or that it wasn’t just her friend 🤷‍♀️
Mustve been terrible for the family having people speculating and making up stories like that.

Local knowledge from people who knew the friend and the woman.

Plus there is no way a toilet brush handle is perforating tissue that far up the rectum unless it was already in there and then been thrust with force. If it really had been a perfect storm of inadvertent misadventure falling off a loo seat just landing on it would have slowed it down so that the perforation either didn’t happen, happened lower down or there would have been more external injury as well. Believe me after 20 years in the nhs I’ve seen it all and heard it all. The amount of people who fall on top of aerosol bottles or ornaments while hoovering naked and end up with something lodged up their arse is untrue! Sometimes it’s actually the end of the hoover nozzle after they tripped over the hose!

samarrange · 03/02/2025 14:27

Believe me after 20 years in the nhs I’ve seen it all and heard it all.

There was a series of Casualty where every episode included a storyline like this. Every week, someone coming up with lame excuses for something beign stuck somewhere. I think the producers did it for a bet.

It is never accidental 😁

SparklyBrickViper · 03/02/2025 14:28

Male and female colleagues.

Quite senior, so could basically travel around as they pleased.

On one such occasion one of them crashed into the other’s car. Unfortunately one of them was driving a hire car (paid through work), so when details were exchanged lots of questions came up about what they were both doing at this office etc.

Shortly after that it became common knowledge and he was quickly moved to another department.

Cardamomandlemons · 03/02/2025 14:28

There was the Nigel Farage one, after he had that plane crash his aides had to keep his wife and two girlfriends apart when they were all visiting him in hospital. It didn't go public at that point though.

Apileofballyhoo · 03/02/2025 00:19

There was a film with Harrison Ford years ago with that premise.

Panic! I think?

MyNewLife2025 · 03/02/2025 14:35

It’s not an unusual situation.
It’s quite a well known issue in hospice (AP wanting to come to see the person and having to ensure they dint meet up with spouse) or in hospital.
Similar to partners (usually men) leaving their partners during cancer treatment.

Situations can be quite complex and heartbreaking fur all involved

Regarding Henry?

JenniferBooth · 03/02/2025 14:42

No but a near miss. OM had just picked me up from my flat almost a year ago when we were involved in an accident at the top of the road. A car was driving towards us on the WRONG side of the road. OM swerved to miss it (luckily there wasnt a car on the other side of the road) and she smashed into OMs car on the back door of the passenger side. It could so easily have been a head on collision. Apparently she lost control because the road was wet.

But i found her on Tik Tok later on filming while behind the wheel

DISCLAIMER. DH knows and we havent been physical for over 28 years. Its not him that would be the problem. Its members of my family.

DevilledEgg · 03/02/2025 14:45

I wish I hadn't clicked on that 😭

UnstableEquilibrium · 03/02/2025 14:45

The storyline with Lady Mary and the sexy but weak-hearted Turkish Ambassador whose corpse had to be returned to his own room in the middle of the night from the third episode of Downton Abbey was based on a true story from the 1890s according to Julian Fellowes.

It's been discussed already on this thread.

It's called Random Hearts.

Regarding Henry?

It was "Random Hearts" - Harrison Ford and Kisten Scott Thomas played strangers who find out that their partners who died in a plane crash were having an affair

Oh sorry! Regarding Henry is also about a man who has an accident and then his affair partner turns up.

ThatEllie · 03/02/2025 14:52

That is shocking. That poor, poor woman. I bet she thought he was home parenting the children, not making an opportunity to cheat. They’ll turn anything into an opportunity, even a walk with their children.

Um, if you don't read at least the first post of a thread, usually kind of difficult to know what it is about! 😂

Seem you were reposting something well into the thread though, but about 30/40 posts in & it wasn’t the first post you were engaging with was it…
