Anyone discovered an affair after an accident?

I recently watched a TV programme about a woman who found out her husband was having an affair after he'd been involved in a serious accident which also involved his affair partner. She thought he was away on business.

Has this happened to anyone in real life?

How shocking it must be and you must have so many questions in your head!

Years ago a neighbour of my parents was found out when he and his AP were involved in an accident.

He was a lorry driver (not long distance or away overnight) and it turns out that he used to take his AP with him out in the lorry. AP also lived opposite him and his wife so that was awkward when they were found out.

My dads friend died of a heart attack while with a sex worker

I'm going back a few years,but I knew a couple-husband,wife and 2.4 kids

Seemed happy enough-until the wives mother died suddenly

It all came out in the wash that the mother had been shagging the husband and had passed away just after he'd heen round for a shag and had gone back home to play happy familes with his wife

They'd been building up to running away together apparently

An elderly relative had an affair with a married man for over 50 years.
Eventually the married couple retired to the coast, and the man bought OW a flat nearby and they carried on seeing each other
Eventually she developed dementia and he would lock her in the house.
Then he died.
Fortunately the OW was found, and put in a care home. With his wife.

Believe me after 20 years in the nhs I’ve seen it all and heard it all.

There was a series of Casualty where every episode included a storyline like this. Every week, someone coming up with lame excuses for something beign stuck somewhere. I think the producers did it for a bet.

I see patient that came up with some story about how they slipped in the shower and hence something stuck up there. One story was so elaborate.

Someone I knew when I was young, whom I haven’t seen in years, recently published an article about her father who, after he died, turned out to have had a second family. The second family knew about the first, but the first was unaware of the second. The first family were considerably better off than the second as her mother had a good career as well as her father. Anyway they seem to have all become good friends so it ended sort of happily although the inequality must have been hard to swallow for the second family I think.

I used to wonder why he was never home and now I know!

Happened in Coronation Street in the 80s, to poor Rita - her husband Len was killed when he fell asleep at the wheel on a return trip from seeing his mistress, Marjorie Proctor, with the affair only becoming exposed to Rita after Len's death. I still remember her face when she found out 😪

Weepixie · 04/02/2025 05:21

@CestLaVie123 those were the real days of Cotonation Street. 🤣❤️

A friend of my partner's discovered her boyfriend who she lived with was living a double life when she saw his wedding photo in the local paper. No accident, but can you imagine?

Panic! I think?

Random hearts, somebody else remembered the name.

After a family member died by suicide it was discovered that he had a whole second family.

I watched a documentary about the former football player JLloyd Samuel. He had played for the team I had a season ticket for.
He died in a car crash and then it unraveled that he had a wife in another country and was also bankrupt. His family had no idea and because he had alcohol in his blood at the time of the accident, his life insurance refused to pay out.

theemmadilemma · 04/02/2025 16:00

That's a shocking watch isn't it @LeoDiCapricorn ?

It must have been in the 90s when a young football club owner died in a helicopter crash. Turned out he had a lover with a baby only a few months old. The aftermath was all over the press.

I think you might mean Matthew Harding he was a director at Chelsea. The crash killed him a few others including the pilot.

Matthew Harding was estranged from his wife ( not divorced) and was living with his new partner. He had children with his wife I think and his new relationship wasn’t secret.

He and new partner had a young son together.

If I remember correctly - Because he and his wife hadn’t divorced she was the sole beneficiary of his Will. However he hadn’t made any financial provision for his new partner or young child - which was very sad - given his wealth and his ability to do so.

DuvetsCovered · 04/02/2025 20:43

Yes, because after the accident it transpired that someone was sitting in a rear passenger seat, prompting the question who was sat in front.

WalkingWavy · 04/02/2025 20:47

I know a guy who tried to commit suicide after his wife found about his affair but he botched it and is now brain damaged and living in a care home. A truly sad story for all concerned

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 03/02/2025 00:32

Not an affair,I read of one the guy was with a dominatrix and took a heart attack. The woman gave him CPR till ambulance came and I think she phoned to inform the wife.

That’s a plot of desperate housewives

doolallysally1 · 04/02/2025 21:13

My mother discovered my father had seen an old flame during their marriage. She found out after he died when the woman texted his phone! He'd given her money, seen her when my mother was in hospital and, apparently, texted her every Christmas. Absolutely mind blowing.

It was just as well that he was already 6 ft under because my mother would have absolutely buried him 😂

CulinaryPumpkin · 04/02/2025 22:12

I work in a hospital and have come across this situation several times, either involving accidents or sudden illnesses. On two occasions it was not just an affair, it was an entire second family.

I don't necessarily think the OP is a journo or a troll (although interesting that she has either joined/name-changed for this thread) but asking people to share stories of someone else's heartbreak for no good reason seems unpleasantly voyueristic.

Don't read it then perhaps, you don't have to clock on the link.

There was the Nigel Farage one, after he had that plane crash his aides had to keep his wife and two girlfriends apart when they were all visiting him in hospital. It didn't go public at that point though.

I hadn't heard about this! What a bloody mess.

Nigel Farage's had three mistresses rushing to help after plane crash

When Nigel Farage escaped death in a horror plane crash in Northamptonshire in 2010 it was not just one but three women who rushed to his aide, reveals one of them - Annabelle Fuller.

Interesting. Where in my OP did I ask people to share stories of someone else's heartbreak?

I didn't ask for any details.

I just asked if anyone knows of someone who it has happened to as it must be shocking!

If MN'ers don't want to comment they don't have to!

And yes, I name changed. I do that fairly regularly.

In Claire Tomalin's wonderful biography of Ellen Tennant, she makes a convincing case that Charles Dickens died at her house after having sex and nit at home. Does that count?

Sorry I don't know how to create a link for this, but if you google Penelope Williams, she was a North Wales nurse who was struck off, as her affair partner died in a car while with her, and she didn't call an ambulance, she rang a friend for advice instead. (2023)
