Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

It's not like it's saying "everyone with a disability can apply and all will get a place on the program" is it? Is it?

Atlasvue · 30/01/2025 21:44

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 21:41

Oh

And also in the link:

The FAA will enroll up to 20 people in the Aviation Development Program

20 people.

That doesn't seem a lot compared to the number of Air Traffic controllers in the USA

Yes, it was a pilot programme. Thats why only 20 places.

Because this was something new they were trying to develop. It failed. Obviously.

Theolittle · 30/01/2025 21:44

He says what he says to make his followers hate anyone perceived as weaker - people with disabilities, women, immigrants, etc.. It is those people who make life poorer and difficult, not his rich mates making billions from everyone else’s hard work. It’s terrifying the way the world is going. It’s terrifying the way idiots even here lap it up.

RedRosesParmaViolets · 30/01/2025 21:45

Just skim reading the last few pages but trump has stopped all flights due to people with intelligent challenges being air traffic control?

OMFG!! Diversity hiring IS about hiring on merit. Rather than on the basis of having white skin and a penis.

Not always. I have a friend who works in headhunting in the US. It's been a nightmare as they have to put forward short lists where they actively have to search for people to tick the boxes. It's not always the best 5 are on that short list. They had to ensure someone was Mexican, someone gay, someone female, etc etc. Surprisingly hard actually to do this.

It's obviously different if people apply to a scheme which is open to 'all' .

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 21:46

cardibach · 30/01/2025 21:42

If two candidates have exactly the same qualifications and aptitude and your organisation has a preponderance of white make employees
One is white male
One is not
how will you choose between them?
random?
the white male to not rock the boat?
the other candidate?

And I bet there would be some people who would think that if the other candidate got hired, it was because of their "identity" instead of the fact they were potentially the better candidate.

And if they got something wrong, then people would blame their "identity" instead of the individual.

“People with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities” should absolutely not be president of America…

Thatissimplyuntrue · 30/01/2025 21:46

pointythings · 30/01/2025 21:40

Why?

Because she had reached the end of her logic and can’t answer it and maintain her position. She is in an acute state of cognitive dissonance and so is very purposefully avoiding. What else can she do without looking a little foolish?

Mrsdyna · 30/01/2025 21:46

pointythings · 30/01/2025 21:40

Why?

At first I didn't respond because I didn't think it was a productive question. Now I’m not going to because there's no point in engaging with people who make arrogant assumptions or act like they know what others are thinking. I prefer to have discussions where we can be mostly respectful, even when we disagree.

Do you have any evidence for this other than ‘my mate’s dog’s babysitter told me’?

wantnoscrubs · 30/01/2025 21:47

JD Vance

'... said without offering evidence that hundreds of people had sued the US government because “they would like to be air traffic controllers, but they were turned away because of the color of their skin”.

They are just making shit up at this point and no one holds them accountable

That's pretty awful, but Christians say things like that all the time. I've had some tell me that children with terminal conditions were a good thing as they were an opportunity to increase your faith..

Wow I'm a Christian but that's bang out of order and incredibly insensitive.

And here we go again. Case in point, you couldn't have timed it better.

Someone has actually said that on twitter. Apparently thinking that the advisory group was in charge of steering aircraft themselves and that they would naturally all fall out of the sky without them.

Their hatred of Trump had caused them to create a fantasy whereby the advisors were fired and the next day people died in a plane crash because of it.

Trump can talk out of his arse sometimes, but he isn't alone in that.

He's a strange man. He has done some great things already, but when he has nothing specific to say he just seems to wander off saying whatever comes into his head. Which is fine when chatting with friends, but not speaking in public.

The diversity thing is real, but not to the extent he was suggesting. Any system that recruits for any other reason than merit is dangerous of course.

Hopefully they'd always check the person was capable of doing the job, but with DEI that won't be the best person for the job, but someone adequate who filled the quota. If DEI made no difference it wouldn't need to exist.

Edited

Keen to hear what he has done that is so great so far...have to admit I'm struggling to find anything.

ghostyslovesheets · 30/01/2025 21:47

I think the biggest issue is most people don’t understand what diversity hiring MEANS

it doesn’t mean someone gets a job because they are gay/black/disabled/female

it means if 2 people are equally qualified they can choose the candidate who is underrepresented within the company.

it comes to something when people equate hiring women or disabled people with a lowering or entry requirements!

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 21:48

Atlasvue · 30/01/2025 21:44

Because this was something new they were trying to develop. It failed. Obviously.

So how come you wrote this?

"The programme was designed for those with serious disabilities. This meant, those who applied for the job via the normal routes were excluded."

Are you saying there was no other way for someone to apply to become an ATC apart from this pilot programme for 20 people?

The question was asked respectfully. You just know your logic has run aground. There is no shame in admitting you have learned something new.

What about my rephrasing of the question to help you out? Will you answer that?

Atlasvue · 30/01/2025 21:48

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 30/01/2025 21:39

But do you think the people in charge of air traffic safety would ever have agreed to massively increase the risk to public safety in the way you are suggesting?

The airport in question has had two near misses in the last year. The night of the crash, only one air traffic controller was on.

The FAA was supposed to be investigating the problems at this airport.

So they don’t always do a good job putting passenger safety first

And you've still not answered this question:

The candidates in this program will receive the same rigorous consideration in terms of aptitude, medical and security qualifications as those individuals considered for a standard public opening for air traffic controller jobs.

What do you think this means?

Dymaxion · 30/01/2025 21:50

@RedRosesParmaViolets I think if what Trump was saying in the press conference is true, and plenty of people on here are supporting his stance, then he is essentially saying that air travel within US airspace is a bit of a lottery safety wise.
However that being the case shouldn't mean flights should be grounded because air travel is a bit a lottery anyway especially if you are in a Boeing ?
