A lyft driver refuses a plus size woman in his car

Soubriquet · 29/01/2025 19:21

I feel sorry for him. He’s going to lose his job at this rate, as management seem to be seeking her out to apologise.

Could he have worded it better? Absolutely.

Is she right to demand to ride in his car when he says she won’t fit and will damage his car? No!

Theres XL lyft for this exact reason

People Back Driver Who Refused To Let Plus-Size Woman In His Car As She Sues Lyft: “Common Sense”

“I've been in cars smaller than that ... It hurt my feelings,” said the woman after the Lyft driver refused to let her enter his Mercedes-Benz.

Oh fgs.

She is 35 fucking stone. Him turning down the job can affect his review rating and he will also lose money for that particular lift.

He's allowed to deny a service to anyone he sees fit (no pun intended.)

Not everyone is out to shoot down obese people.

This. ^ Agree with your last line particularly. As I said, I think some posters are getting angry and salty because some other posters are hitting a raw nerve.

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 20:51

SabreIsMyFave · 29/01/2025 20:46

Serious question, why is it so bad to point out that someone is extremely overweight/super morbidly obese? Why are some posters getting salty and angry at people just pointing out cold hard facts?! No-one is being 'rude,' people are stating facts. Maybe some people are feeling touchy because some other posters are hitting a raw nerve.

Read the comments. They aren't all pointing out that this lady has a larger than average body in a polite or factual way.

AnotherWeekAnotherUsername · 29/01/2025 20:51

EasterIssland · 29/01/2025 20:49

Nobody knows this woman and everyone is entitled to an opinion about her body?
also, many comments in this thread have been body shaming her and and not treating her like a human that deserves respect because the scales says a number that according to them is not ideal.

Maybe people should stop talking about other people’s bodies

because the scales says a number that according to them is not ideal.

It’s not just the scales that are not ideal tbf.

She invited people to talk about her body when she set about to ruin this man’s livelihood.

Because, as people have said, the weight of three people weighing 10 stone over three seats won’t do the same damage as one person weighing 30 stone sitting in one spot.

Exactly this.

Why are (some) people refusing to accept and see this basic fact? Confused

Most of them are. I don't see any nasty comments. Just many people saying they agree with the taxi driver, and they would not let the woman into their taxi either.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 29/01/2025 20:53

soupyspoon · 29/01/2025 20:30

presumably because she needs a bigger car that she can fit in, she shouldnt have taken the risk that one would arrive that she couldnt fit in

Isnt that the point

But the point is, is that she’s ordered standard Ubers/Lyfts before and she can fit. She hasn’t had to use the XL option before.

I understand that this is a discussion forum but I really wish people only responded when you’ve @‘d them/quoted them. A lot of the times you’re asking a question based on something that someone has said and you want to understand what they mean further. So many other people chime in that you end up repeating yourself when all you wanted to do is speak to one person😅

Maestoso · 29/01/2025 20:53

mitogoshigg · 29/01/2025 20:50

Surely the car can take 3 people so as long as she physically can fit into the vehicle what is the problem. Dh and i combined do not weigh that much less Blush we travel in small cars without issue

Presumably you're not sitting on his lap when he's driving? So weight more evenly distributed?

YouDeserveBetterSoAskForIt · 29/01/2025 20:53

Being extremely obese is disordered eating... Exactly the same as being anorexic. It is a form of self harm, often the result of trauma. A lot of young women put on huge amounts of weight after sexual abuse in order to try to make themselves less attractive to their abuser.

I put on a lot of weight when I left home because I suffered neglect and my mum often didn't feed us. I struggle to control my food drive because psychologically I am always in starvation mode.

I am now overweight, not obese, which is a win... but it is a huge struggle and I needed a lot of therapy. Something many people don't have access to for various reasons.

But there's many, many reasons why someone may have disordered eating and they deserve humanity and compassion.

It is okay to be factual. Yes, she is morbidly obese. But the tone of some of the comments on here are truly awful.

There is a real lack of understanding and care around disordered eating when the person is fat vs thin.

I want to know where her leggings are from. They look squat proof.

Misses point of thread

If you don’t see any nasty comments maybe it’s cuz you think the same as them or you’ve not read all the comments.

I sincerely promise that I never talk about the weight of other people bodies when the weight of said bodies isn’t impacting me or anyone else - if you’re happy at 34 stone then you crack on.

however, If your weight causes problems for others (damages their car, impacts their comfort on a plane etc) then, well, it’s fair game isn’t it.

This happens on this forum all the time, calling things fat shaming or body shaming

Is it ok to do this much damage to yourself, I used to be very overweight and the answer to that is no.

So its ok to say that

This story however is not about her health, its about bald facts that she cant fit in a car and could damage the car, no shaming about it.

And yes, to answer someone elses point above, there is an expectation that people pander to this. The answer is, you cant use this car, please book another.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/01/2025 20:57

Surely taxi drivers have the right to refuse anyone, for whatever reason?

Nope. How does their weight impact you?

albapunk · 29/01/2025 20:58

I drive a BMW estate car, a bloody large one too. That person would not be able to fit safely in my car. Due to the door shape and seats.

My sister had a friend who was just shy of 25 stone. She had to sit in the middle back seat of my sisters car (a small, popular car) otherwise the suspension was badly affected and it was unsafe to drive.

I say all this as a plus size person myself. I have struggled to fit in the seats of some cars and I'm 18 stone.

Is it in the t&c that you can refuse anyone for whatever reason?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/01/2025 20:58

Completely agree. We could stop it but it's obviously so much fun for so many posters here.

I wonder at the mentality of posters who trawl sites looking for 'fat people' stories so they can post them here? Vapid doesn't even cover it.

I have sat next to someone really overweight on a plane. It was so uncomfortable, they were in the middle seat and I was squished into window as they bulged under and over the arm rest. Flight was full so I was just stuck there. Really long flight too from Sydney to LA.

Possible unpopular opinion (to some people): I think airline passengers should be screened for weight/size just like luggage. If a passengers entire body doesn't fit in the single seat space, they should be required to pay for a second seat. If a second seat is not available, they need to reschedule. No one should ever be allowed to intrude into another passenger's seat area.

I recall being on a flight once next to an overweight middle-aged man. Without asking, he lifted the armrest between our seats to give himself more room. My room. My seat. I put it back down. He didn't like it, but what was he going to do? I suppose he assumed a woman wouldn't dare to confront him, but I'm not the type of person to set myself on fire to keep someone else warm.

Uber/Lyft drivers have all different makes and models, so even a standard car can vary considerably in terms of seat style/door style/height from the ground etc so it's possible she has just been lucky. If the driver arrived in a Ford Fiesta she simply wouldn't fit either and it wouldn't be the drivers fault.

They do that for very small planes, like flights to the Isles of Scilly, all passengers are weighed so the weight can be distributed evenly

The comment two comments above yours? And not there when Sabrels posted? That makes sense.
