A lyft driver refuses a plus size woman in his car

Soubriquet · 29/01/2025 19:21

I feel sorry for him. He’s going to lose his job at this rate, as management seem to be seeking her out to apologise.

Could he have worded it better? Absolutely.

Is she right to demand to ride in his car when he says she won’t fit and will damage his car? No!

Theres XL lyft for this exact reason

People Back Driver Who Refused To Let Plus-Size Woman In His Car As She Sues Lyft: “Common Sense”

“I've been in cars smaller than that ... It hurt my feelings,” said the woman after the Lyft driver refused to let her enter his Mercedes-Benz.

Nah sorry america is full of big people, he saw an opportunity to be nasty and took it

The tires will not collapse 🙄

If she was wearing black and covered up her stomach, she'd look like a typical American

It seems that the pot is calling the kettle black when it comes to nasty comments.

Nobody knows this woman and everyone is entitled to an opinion about her body?
also, many comments in this thread have been body shaming her and and not treating her like a human that deserves respect because the scales says a number that according to them is not ideal.

Maybe people should stop talking about other people’s bodies

Nah.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/01/2025 20:29

I think she is larger than the average overweight person, however, I watched the interview with her and her lawyer on tv yesterday. Frankly, I got the feeling it was about grabbing an opportunity to promote her music as that's what the conversation turned to. I didn't get the sense that the driver was particularly rude or discriminatory, but obvious she says ahe felt that which is fair.
She knows her size and I think she should have requested a specific type of vehicle in the same way a wheelchair user would. The driver could have declined the ride, but helped get a replacement and stay with her until an alternate vehicle arrived.
Another option I've thought about is she might be trying to make a point about larger people needing more consideration which I think they likely do.

Edited

Why would the driver have to stay with her whilst waiting on an other one?

She's morbidly obese, not disabled or vulnerable.

She's the one that put it out there to be talked about in the media.

But the point is, is that she’s ordered standard Ubers/Lyfts before and she can fit. She hasn’t had to use the XL option before.

I understand that this is a discussion forum but I really wish people only responded when you’ve @‘d them/quoted them. A lot of the times you’re asking a question based on something that someone has said and you want to understand what they mean further. So many other people chime in that you end up repeating yourself when all you wanted to do is speak to one person😅

And this time she didnt fit, so ergo, cancel booking and book the XL, lesson learned, its not hard

Also you only have her word that she has fit in cars before, I bet the drivers thought 'never again' after she got out

Possible unpopular opinion (to some people): I think airline passengers should be screened for weight/size just like luggage. If a passengers entire body doesn't fit in the single seat space, they should be required to pay for a second seat. If a second seat is not available, they need to reschedule. No one should ever be allowed to intrude into another passenger's seat area.

I recall being on a flight once next to an overweight middle-aged man. Without asking, he lifted the armrest between our seats to give himself more room. My room. My seat. I put it back down. He didn't like it, but what was he going to do? I suppose he assumed a woman wouldn't dare to confront him, but I'm not the type of person to set myself on fire to keep someone else warm.

I’d agree with you. I think some passengers chance it as if there is a spare seat people will move. It should be enforced by the airline though.

Surely taxi drivers have the right to refuse anyone, for whatever reason?

Not whatever reason or you'd get a load of homophobic taxi refusals

The comment two comments above yours? And not there when Sabrels posted? That makes sense.

It’s not the 1st rude comment there is another one I.e at 20:35 in this thread

TheBossOfMe · 29/01/2025 21:05

EasterIssland · 29/01/2025 20:58

Nope. How does their weight impact you?

Sitting next to someone on a long flight who can’t fit into their seat and takes up some of mine is uncomfortable. I usually live with that although I have no hesitation about waking them up to walk around to avoid DVT.

Carrying a car passenger when they’re going to at best cost me money on car maintenance ahead of when I’d need things like suspension repairs and at worst at could kill me in the event of a crash because they can’t use the seatbelt? Absolutely not ever going to risk that.

Tagging you @SabreIsMyFave as you’ve said there are not rude comments in this thread.

The post that ws made after the poster said there werent any nasty comments

What are you a time traveller?

Takoneko · 29/01/2025 21:07

I’m not judging the woman for her weight. I’m not skinny myself.

However, I can see why he said no. She’s really heavy. I watch sumo wrestling and she’s a good 70lbs heavier than the heaviest (male) wrestler in the top division. In sumo they travel in big cars and have huge, heavy-duty wheelchairs when injured etc.

She is the sort of weight that requires special adaptions.

I don’t think he needs to wait either. He’s self employed so unless he has a paying passenger he isn’t earning.

What a horrible thread. I'm not expressing an opinion regarding the Lyft situation but some of you are not even attempting to disguise your disgust of overweight people. Have a think about the effect that might have on some people who are reading this thread.

This 👏🏻

But the car can handle the weight of 3 people surely?

Evenly spread throughout the car, yes easily….her weight would all be in one spot, I wouldn’t want this either

Was that my comment, ‘There’s overweight and overweight’? Because that is a fact too. Obviously if she was overweight at 18 stone or so it wouldn’t be a problem but overweight at 35 stone then yes, there’s a problem.

It's not a problem. How on earth does it affect you what weight she is.
