A lyft driver refuses a plus size woman in his car

I feel sorry for him. He’s going to lose his job at this rate, as management seem to be seeking her out to apologise.

Could he have worded it better? Absolutely.

Is she right to demand to ride in his car when he says she won’t fit and will damage his car? No!

Theres XL lyft for this exact reason

People Back Driver Who Refused To Let Plus-Size Woman In His Car As She Sues Lyft: “Common Sense”

“I've been in cars smaller than that ... It hurt my feelings,” said the woman after the Lyft driver refused to let her enter his Mercedes-Benz.

I wouldn’t want that in my car.

edit: I wouldn’t want all that weight in my car.

Jiyty · 29/01/2025 20:12

I feel so sorry for the driver. Lyft said he was unacceptable, I don't think he was. He wanted to cancel the ride with no charge and suggested she get an XL vehicle.

Would Lyft have fixed his car if she broke it?

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights has revealed on its website that they have the “authority” to “accept complaints based on unlawful consideration of religion, race, color, national origin, arrest record, genetic information, sex, age, height, weight, marital status and disability.”

Arrest record... 😳

Yes you can't unlawfully consider someone's arrest record

I have sat next to someone really overweight on a plane. It was so uncomfortable, they were in the middle seat and I was squished into window as they bulged under and over the arm rest. Flight was full so I was just stuck there. Really long flight too from Sydney to LA.

My worry on every flight, tbh! I’ve got a couple of long flights tomorrow and if anyone who needs to ‘spread out’ is next to me I’ll be putting the arm rest down asap and praying! 😬

VisitationRights · 29/01/2025 20:16

This was a stitch up against Lyft by a fat influencer looking for a pay out common in us cases.

Mingenious · 29/01/2025 20:04

Some people drive older cars! even newer cars aren’t designed to have the weight of 3
people on one wheel.

Imagine sitting next to her on a plane 😬

She would be great to chat to

He didn't refuse. He suggested she would be more comfortable in a bigger car, let her try and get in his and she didn't fit. She deliberately ordered something she knew she wouldn't fit in.

She deliberately ordered something she knew she wouldn't fit in

That doesn’t make sense. When you order a standard Uber, a Tesla can turn up, a Prius or a 7 seater car. You don’t know what type of car you’re going to get so how could she have done that deliberately? And for what reason?

lastminutetrip · 29/01/2025 20:19

I’m going to sound an absolute bitch here but I have a family member who weighs about that. We followed behind them in their car somewhere and you could see the car was tipping on one side, and even scraped a speed bump as the weight was making the car so much lower on one side.

You do, you can order an XL for bags, extra seats, extra economy, all those things

Hotflushesandchilblains · 29/01/2025 20:20

I have overweight friends and am trying to lose some weight myself so normally would not think twice. But I have a cousin who is hugely obese - like mobility imparing overweight - the last time I gave her a lift I had to put the passenger seat back as far as it would go and it was a struggle to fit her in even then. And I realized she did not have the seat belt on, as it would not fit across her - and I dont have an extender. I was quite concerned about having that much weight on one seat.

poemsandwine · 29/01/2025 20:23

I'm with him. That's not 'overweight.'

N0sferatu · 29/01/2025 20:23

What a horrible thread. I'm not expressing an opinion regarding the Lyft situation but some of you are not even attempting to disguise your disgust of overweight people. Have a think about the effect that might have on some people who are reading this thread.

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 20:23

BobbiJo · 29/01/2025 20:07

I used to drive a Smart car.

... I'm glad she didn't ask me for a lift..

Are you a taxi driver? If not then you aren't providing a paid service so wouldn't need to worry about objecting.

That doesn’t make you a bitch, you’re just sharing facts.

Nah sorry america is full of big people, he saw an opportunity to be nasty and took it

The tires will not collapse 🙄

If she was wearing black and covered up her stomach, she'd look like a typical American

That's just fucking rude.

When you order a standard uber, ANYTHING can turn up as long as it’s in the area. Without booking an xl uber, a 7 seater car can turn up. A KIA with loads of room can turn up. Or you can get a small Prius. You really can get anything so my question to the poster I quoted was, how could she do that deliberately when a range of cars can turn up? I’ll wait for them to respond thank you

Tha was what I thought too. She knows she's huge - it's her USP, as it were. And apparently you can order an XL car on Lyft - so why didn't she?

Because she's used standard size before presumably

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/01/2025 20:29

I think she is larger than the average overweight person, however, I watched the interview with her and her lawyer on tv yesterday. Frankly, I got the feeling it was about grabbing an opportunity to promote her music as that's what the conversation turned to. I didn't get the sense that the driver was particularly rude or discriminatory, but obvious she says ahe felt that which is fair.
She knows her size and I think she should have requested a specific type of vehicle in the same way a wheelchair user would. The driver could have declined the ride, but helped get a replacement and stay with her until an alternate vehicle arrived.
Another option I've thought about is she might be trying to make a point about larger people needing more consideration which I think they likely do.

Violinist64 · 29/01/2025 20:29

I’m no Slim Jim myself, but a “normal” overweight - this woman is quite a lot more than twice my weight. I am totally with the driver. The Fat Acceptance movement is all well and good and, of course we should not upset someone because of their size, but people like this woman should also take responsibility for their size and accept that if they need very large clothes then they are unlikely to fit in certain places. There was a thread on here the other day where a very large woman (29 stones) was worried about an aeroplane journey. She was given a lot of good advice and reassurance about what she should do in these circumstances. However, there was one poster who was a similar size to the OP and claimed she had never had a problem on an aeroplane because she carried all her weight on her stomach. Several of us disputed her claim as we knew it would be impossible for her weight to not affect other people one way or another if she were sitting in an economy seat. She still insisted that she was fine. We all have to take responsibility for ourselves whatever our size.

presumably because she needs a bigger car that she can fit in, she shouldnt have taken the risk that one would arrive that she couldnt fit in

Isnt that the point

In the car?

Well the owner and driver says she cant, not for her to decide really is it?

What a very rude comment.

The irony of you saying HE said something nasty, and then coming out with THAT!

I wouldn't have let her into my car either.
