Kids back at school for 1st time since Xmas break

My primary school children have not been at school because they were ill then I was to ill to take them. The school do know this and were understanding.

I haven't left my house since new year . And I feel sort of scared of going out and starting life again. I feel like I just want to stay in. I don't want the hassle of public transport. The business of everything.

So according to your posts you have DS17, DS22, an adult DD and a teen DD. As well as your 8 and 9 year old.

And not one of those could have taken the younger kids to school one day?

As for keeping saying that the school are aware of your family setup, that doesn't sound great...

Who was looking after your children when you couldn't breathe or get out of bed?

I think what so many posters are forgetting is that what's done is done. It's not great but it's done. It's all well and good saying Op shouldn't have done it but arguing on the internet isn't going to change it.

OP, if it happens again, please ask for support from the school. They might even be able to organise taxi / bus if you're eligible for that.

I did ask for support from the school. That's why I rang them in the first place. I was totally honest with them. But they just said its not ideal but not much can be done

It is worth asking them again now that things have settled down and finding out if they can organise anything as a backup plan if it were to happen again. Easier to prevent it than to deal with it when you're so poorly. School are there to help parents as well

A whole month of school isn’t acceptable. I’ve taken my daughter to school with all sorts going on. A couple of years ago I was having a Crohn’s flare and was incredibly poorly (I was sitting on the toilet in agony and vomiting into a bucket at the same time because the pain was horrendous). My IBD nurse said I had to go to hospital but I made sure my daughter was at (school) nursery before I went to the hospital. Spent a week in hospital where, at first, they suspected I had a perforated bowel because I was so unwell. Early last year I had flu (legit flu not just a cold) and managed to get my daughter to school somehow.

I find it hard to believe the school were ok with this, OP. Everyone has made excellent points. You really need something in place so this doesn’t happen again. No one is “shit stirring”. People are concerned for the welfare of young children who haven’t been to school in a month. It would be worrying if no one was concerned about this.

bellsend · 30/01/2025 13:39

Why on earth do you live so far away from their school?

and if your story is correct, did the school not atleast send work for them to do at home? What did they DO all day???

MillionaireCaramel · 30/01/2025 13:41

If school is so far away are your kids eligible for any form of school transport at all? I'm in Scotland so appreciate this may be different in other places, but where I am kids are eligible if they live more than 3 miles away, which it sounds like you do. I'm sure you've already looked into this, but it is worth asking again. School transport can and does include taxis which they can go in alone.

We had problems with housing we were in temporary accommodation for some time and moved a good few times the one stability the kids had was school. I'm housed permanently now . But I won't move their school as I don't want to unsettle them. Ds also has autism and ehcp he would not cope with the change i won't do that to them.

Kids can go in a taxi alone actually and a pair of 8/9 would be fine normally.

It's true the past can't be changed, but I think the point here is that most people think wasn't a great decision to keep them off school and that you might benefit from some help or support to help you avoid the situation occurring again and to ensure your DC's education is top priority.

I wonder who would have overseen this amid such apparent chaos?
