Kids back at school for 1st time since Xmas break

My primary school children have not been at school because they were ill then I was to ill to take them. The school do know this and were understanding.

I haven't left my house since new year . And I feel sort of scared of going out and starting life again. I feel like I just want to stay in. I don't want the hassle of public transport. The business of everything.

This isn’t healthy. Your kids being kept at home for over a month isn’t healthy. You calling people sad for not agreeing with your lax parenting isn’t healthy.

I have dragged my arse out with all illnesses, after hospital stays and surgery because my child is more important than me not being arsed with public transport.

You’ve got to do it eventually so just get dressed, coat on and go out. Here it’s cold but dry and bright today.

this is what a ‘be kind’ culture does - some behaviour is not ok and needs to be called out. Your kids should have been in school and they will find it hard to catch up. That’s on you.

Autther · 30/01/2025 09:24

Have your children literally just been inside and not gone anywhere for nearly a month? They must be bouncing off the walls.

I had flu and pneumonia on top . I was really ill. Its ok saying i would drag myself out get the kids to school but I could barely breath. I was waking in the night fighting for breath. I couldn't walk because of the breathing legs were shaking and giving way. I couldn't talk in a fall sentence because I couldn't catch my breath .

I was completely honest with the school

If you were actually this bad your doctor would have sent you to hospital

If you were that ill it would have been better to get the kids to school somehow, so you could at least rest for 6 hours each day.

I think there’s a lot more to this, and I expect social services are already aware.

I could not breath. I could not even stand even the bottom of my legs/feet were going a red/purple colour because the oxygen was not reaching them . You have absolutely no idea what it was like

Then how could you care for your children? Either they are so young that they couldn’t possibly have been walked to the pavement and put in a taxi to the school reception in which case how could you care for them all month, or you could have made the effort for 5 minutes to book a taxi and see them off leaving you to recover for the rest of the day.
If they were old enough to look after themselves all day then you are being completely unreasonable for not organising a taxi to take them or asking the other almost adult who lives in the home.

BodenCardiganNot · 30/01/2025 10:03

You have an almost 18 year old son. Could he not have brought them to school and collected them? How did you feed and care for them when you were so ill?

This isn’t true. Your doctor would have sent you to hospital if this was really the case.

Now you are being ridiculous.

BodenCardiganNot · 30/01/2025 10:11

So what about your almost adult young son? Is he around?

All the more reason to get the kids out of the way as you couldn’t have looked after them.

So your GP did not send you to hospital even though you could not breath and oxygen was not reaching your leg? Did they know you were home alone with young children to care for? I imagine they would have a duty of care towards those children. Did the school know how ill you were while caring for young children? Don't they have a duty of care as well?

I hope you and your DC are all feeling better now.

It's a lot of time to miss off school..... certainly not ideal but it does sound like you were really unwell. These things happen and it's done now.

Now I think you need to focus on getting them and you back in a solid routine

monicagellerbing · 30/01/2025 10:23

OMG it's 'breathe' when you say 'I could not BREATHE'

If you say 'it was hard to get my breath, it's BREATH.

I'm off to pendants corner Smile

We are all back at school now so its getting back to normal. I'm still struggling but definitely not like i was . I did have to get a cab home from the school yesterday because I suddenly felt like I was going to faint . I was ok though I was just not sure i could do the public transport and walking . And its been ok today so far. I just have to leave home early and really take my time. But I have been managing

It sounds as though your family are in difficult circumstances OP. I'm glad that you're feeling better and I get how hard this time of year can be and how uphill everything can feel.

Personally I would spend less time dwelling on what has happened, obviously it's not good to miss so much school, and look at how you can make things better this year. I don't know much about your background but is there any potential for a back up plan if you can't manage the school run? I do get that we don't all have the benefit of a support network.

Do you have health issues that put you at more risk from illness? Is there anything that can be done for this? I'm assuming you qualify for flu jabs.

Chewbecca · 30/01/2025 10:31

Was there absolutely noone who could take your DC to school whilst you recovered?

I suspect a safeguarding referral may be made as a result.

Yeah your right I can't change what's happend and they are back at school now .
I don't normally get si I'll that i can't get them to school. I was last ill like that when vovid was at its peak . They symptoms were very simlar. And them I was next ill more recently. Ie this situation we are talking about now.

I litterly don't have that type of support network. People on MN had suggested I contact the school and see how they can help . I spoke to attendance/safe guarding it's the same person . I was completely honest with her. And she just said not much can be done. She said its not ideal but just to get them back ASAP. She did call a few times to check in.

You are probably correct. One would certainly be made at my school.
