Part of the reason the Nazis were able to take over was the incompetence of the people they had to overcome. Some of which was excusable because "no one ever dreamed".
However, I have grown up being told (quite aggressively in some cases) that the founding fathers were so brilliant they foresaw this and that's why the US is immune to dictators (if you had a feeling it was Americans that were telling me this, you win your bet).
