with regards to regulatory action on consumer goods- sometimes it's needed or industry would never get their arses off the ground to develop good alternatives.

case in point old style light bulbs

Donald Trump’s son has backed a proposed sports event for athletes using performance enhancing drugs as the US president shakes up health policy and sports governance.

Well I think Don Jr knows a thing or two about drugs, although he seems to have missed out on the performance enhancing part.

I guess never say never, but would top athletes who stood a chance of breaking a world record want to take part in this as it would eliminate them from other (legitimate) competition.

@SerendipityJane I suspect all of our algorithms could use a little oiling at this point. Difficult times.

@Lalgarh Glasgow to London in 5 hours? Crikey. It's 400 miles, so that's quite a feat. That's been the unfortunate thing about the Swasticar. We have a home charger, solar powered as much as possible, and the supercharging infrastructure across the UK is really excellent. A drive like that we could do on a charge at home and about a half hour en route. And, yes, the fires aren't great, but they're also the least likely cars to catch on fire, with hybrids being the most likely. The truth is, you don't want to be trapped in or near any burning car.

Which forced the worse than useless CFL upon a public who immediately associated "environmentally friendly " with "enemy of the people".

And any general will tell you once you have lost hearts and minds, losing the war will follow

The trouble with these things is a replacement is found and people say "that'll do" waaaay too early. And the conspiracy theorist in me wonders who stands to gain from a shoddy replacement that fails against the requirements of basic functionality?

Hanlons Razor, remember.

However the reasons are less important than the outcomes. And here the outcome was to reinforce the (perceived ?) disconnect between those that would "rule" us, and those that have to suffer these idiots.

And that outcome is why this thread is discussing President Trump, not President Harris.

Brexit was a similar outcome for the UK. A population that felt largely hectored by a rather detached elite.

Notice I say "felt". Peoples connection to reality is all about "da feelz" This is how populism works.

Returning to paper straws (what ? Again ?! Is this a Stewart Lee routine ?). Maybe in isolation they could have worked. But added to the dual flush disaster and the lightbulb lunacy, and you start building a narrative that the gulf between government and people is growing and not in favour of the people. Lightbulbs are a paradigm because not only were they crap. They were obscenely expensive compared to the tried and tested incandescent ones. Again feeding a narrative of a rich elite dictating to a downtrodden populace.

Now for all my pissedoffness, I'm not so fucking stupid as to say yes to fascism. But even saying that will push the narrative of the elite. And as we now see, many people had far less worries. Which is indicative of people who frankly care more about tomorrow than next week.

None of this is news.

TokyoSushi · 14/02/2025 11:21

They're all a bit of a nightmare at the Munich security conference, very 'we'll do what we like, we're calling the shots, we own the place' type of attitude, really unpleasant, no grace whatsoever.

Pete Hegseth is particularly cringeworthy, but JD Vance is really not much better. He's just started the news clip with David Lammy as 'it's a pleasure to host you' - surely if they're in Munich then nobody is really hosting anybody?

They need a bit of a 'YOU'RE NOT IN CHARGE OF THE WORLD YOU KNOW' reality check!

BustinBaoBun · 14/02/2025 11:33

Yuk Hegseth is like some macho man on steroids loving every minute of his position, flexing his muscles

“President Trump will not allow anyone to turn Uncle Sam into Uncle Sucker.”

Embarrassing

Ugh did he really say that? Publicly?

Yep!! 🙄

Electric vehicles also don't have consistent charging points. I know 2 People who tried to drive Glasgow to London. About 5 hours in petrol and 9 hours + in electric given charges (sometimes 10 min, sometimes30).

Electrics are also a nightmare to extinguish if they catch fire. They can spontaneously reignite up to 3 weeks later.
Cf the Los Angeles fires

You can’t do London to Glasgow in 5 hours.

Absolutely not, they are certain that they are admired, by all!

They are incapable of humility. Or humiliation. Or humanity.

The H's seem to be escaping them.

Well this is true. Devoid of any sense of dignity or humility.

I mean, everyone is laughing. The ones who want to use them are laughing with glee and the rest are laughing with derision. I do think they would care if they had the emotional ability to realise that.

Trump's whole presidency came about because people laughed at him. Musk degrades at the smallest implication of criticism. They're the thinnest skinned snowflakes alive.

To drink raw milk here we'd have to immunise cows. Which DEFRA won't. My mum raised in Ireland caught TB aged 12. She spent months in a sanatorium

JoshLymanSwagger · 14/02/2025 13:27

Oh, and regarding the dual flush loo thing - I took mine apart this morning because it really doesn't "dual" anything.

There are two plastic "fingers" under the button mechanism, both cut to the same length. So it's doing "little" flush only irrespective of which button you press.

It really is cheap💩 "that'll do" which is why we rarely use it.

Good grief, the optics at this security conference are appalling.

'Team US' are so arrogant, so keen to talk down to the silly Europeans saying that they need to 'step up' and 'take responsibility.' This coming from JD Vance who has been a senior politician for what, 25 days?

I and my family only drank raw milk. We were dairy farmers. Hardly ever ill

The "green" in "green lobby" was the green light to businesses to fleece the public in the name of the planet.

The second some shyster saw a sincere person willing to pay a penny extra for the "organic" option, the dogs were out of the trap.
