I always find this fascinating.

AI holidays
Period features
SUVs
Buying new baby clothes/decorating a nursery.

What else?

Perceived Americanisms.

NCembarassed · 18/01/2025 23:37

Private schools. A lot of people on MN seem to hate anyone who sends their child to one & believe all sorts of outdated stereotypes.

Please note, I said "A lot" - not all.

New Build houses

That's the biggest one I think

Higher education. Some posters think it isn't worth getting a degree from a universiy that isn't a top 10 university.

Careers. The same posters assume that everyone wants a career in law/finance in London at a big 4 or magic circle firm. Vocational careers that don't pay big bucks are beyond the pale.

Piercings, tattoos, I once got berated on here for saying I had a whippet that lives with a cat

my cat, and my mums deerhound lurcher LOVE each other. they don't live together, but when we visit, he comes with us, and we stay over, and if we go away, we drop him off there. it's his second home.
yes, some sighthounds have a strong prey drive and can't live with cats. but not all. Crowley and Mouse are best friends. they're so funny when they're playing together. it's obvious he's the one in charge, despite barely being bigger than her head.

whaddayawannado · 18/01/2025 23:41

Daring to mention that your child might be gifted.

Being happy to be referred to as 'Mrs'.

Giving your kids chicken nuggets & chips for their tea more than once in a blue moon.

Married a Northerner.
Love AI holidays (tried half board and full board but spent a fortune in booze, so we're reverting to AI with concierge service)
Love a salad.
Drive a small SUV.
Celebrate adult birthdays.

He may be Northern, but he does make his own stock and my god, his gravy is delicious.

Northern blokes LOVE gravy. my Scouser stepdad makes an amazing roast, and everyone raves about how good the gravy is.

Nothing. MumsNet's Talk Forums, when allowed to proliferate without too much moderation, are delightfully contrary.

I do think, though, that we as individual users may especially notice negativity or controversy about things that interest or concern us. That doesn't mean that MN users are consistently negative about these things, but rather that there's more of a criticism on MN than most of us have experienced in real life.

My personal list of topics where people here very frequently seem more than usually weird (and possibly ignorant) than genpop:

  • Privacy
  • Scotland
  • Ireland
  • Wales
  • The USA
  • "Europe"/the EU
  • Rhotic vs non rhotic pronunciation
  • Baby names that might derive from or be trad in another language. country, or culture

For a start: tattoos, Disney, any form of a Bully breed or doodle cross, sugar, social media, the smell of cannabis, people making plans spontaneously

I don’t think it’s snobby to hate the smell of cannabis, it’s completely repulsive

BobbyBiscuits · 18/01/2025 23:45

Vaping
Cannabis
People on benefits

Is that a euphemism 🤣🥵

PrinnyPree · 18/01/2025 23:47

Radley handbags 😅

No. Buffets ......I want a menu and to be served from that

Not queuing for dinner or a drink from the bar

You’re going to the wrong AI. There’s a sliding scale as with most things. Try an Ikos.

Radley handbags 😅

They are very early 2000’s though😊, I remember getting my mum one as a gift back then

theresabluebirdinmyheart · 18/01/2025 23:52

Bottle Feeding.
Feeding your baby jars or pouches of ready made baby food instead of making your own.

Ham

For the first time in my life, I literally spat my tea out laughing at that!

AcrossthePond55 · 18/01/2025 23:52

Things it considers American. And the US in general.

Makes me sad. There are things done differently in the UK (and many other countries) than we would do in the US, but I certainly don't look down on those things. Or make fun of them.

Bayliss and Harding

They're right about Shein

Piercings, tattoos, I once got berated on here for saying I had a whippet that lives with a cat

What is wrong with a Whippet who lives with a cat?

Whippets and Cats live together well, as long as the Whippet knows the cat is in charge, all is well.

My friend has three Whippets, a cat and a large Bunny. The Bunny rules the garden, and the Cat rules the house. The three Whippets are very respectful of the cat and bunny.

Taking issue with people who use cheap Chinese websites that use slave labour is not an issue of snobbery. It’s an issue of moral conscience.

Where do you buy your clothes? Without googling.
