I always find this fascinating.

AI holidays
Period features
SUVs
Buying new baby clothes/decorating a nursery.

What else?

OP posts:

Eating in the street apart from an icecream

You clearly haven't read any of the threads that I have where some Londoners are very sniffy about northerners @TheaBrandt

To be fair it is always the same few posters who are rude.

So not all Londoners then.

NoCarbsForMe · 19/01/2025 19:48

Are you saying these things are all frowned upon OP?

AI holidays
Period features
SUVs
Buying new baby clothes/decorating a nursery.

No, some Londoners, which I did make very clear in my post.

Well, I certainly wouldn't ever purchase a leasehold property

I remember once advising someone to steer clear when she was considering an investment. She was unsure still so spoke to several other property professionals (various disciplines ) and they all said the same thing.

The only time I would even vaguely consider it is if it was a small building and each leaseholder owned a share of the freehold. But even then I would opt for straightforward freehold every time if I had the choice

You only have to look at the cladding scandal to get a sense of the issues.

No one should ever buy a flat then? Ever?

Not every leasehold property is a huge block where management companies have carte blanche to do as they please. I live in a conversion and it’s a condition of the lease that the ground rent can only go up every 25 years.

For a property lawyer, your understanding of the UK property market outside of the traditional three-bed semi approach seems rather limited.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2025 16:05

Believe me @NiceCutRoundDomeDormice some Londoners genuinely think that it is a cultural desert outides of the M25.

Some members of my well educated family were like that.

When I lived and worked in London I went to the theatre as regularly as I do now here in Yorkshire.

I didn’t say no such people exist. Just that London isn’t some hive mind where we all think life ends at Watford.

I didn't say noone should buy one, I said I would never want to unless I had no other choice.

I am well aware of the variety of types of leasehold ownership. I am also aware that all of them involve at least some ceding of control compared to freehold ownership

@CrowleyKitten

a chicken stock pot makes my cheese sauce so rich and silky, and everyone says it's delicious

🤣 presumably you aren't feeding this to any vegetarians then!

well obviously not! if I was cooking it for a veggie, I'd use a veggie one, but I don't think it would give the same richness, but it would still give the texture.
but seeing as a lot of the things I make with cheese sauce tend to also have bacon in them, that's rather a moot point.

ODFOx · 20/01/2025 09:49

Lots of these things are polarising on MN and in RL. I don't think that there is a consistent approach of snobbery or inverse snobbery; just strongly held opinions on both sides. Disagreement isn't necessarily judgement (something I remind my DC of regularly).
Except ham. Even if you eat wafer thin reformed ham (and I do) I think we can all agree that naice ham is naicer.
Also eggy lemon drizzle: there is no excuse.

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea

Oreyt
Pancakes with Gravy

I think that would be perfectly reasonable ! Who on earth eats pancakes with gravy ?

Point proven.

Not really as I'm not being snobbish toward it. Genuinely never heard of people eating those two things together - is it regional, like whether people have ketchup, curry sauce or gravy on their chips ?

sprigatito · 20/01/2025 20:01

The colour white in a whole range of contexts seems to send MNers into an ecstasy of smuggery. Babies must only appear in crisp white babygrows. Towels must be white. Also toilet paper. And plates. Any hint of colour and you are a chav and MN will curl its lip at you.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/01/2025 20:10

Do you know, @sprigatito, in the term 'crisp white #####', does the word 'crisp' refer to the clothing article or the colour white ? I've never understood why people would want crispy shirts, and I certainly wouldn't put a baby in non-soft clothing.

Maddy70 · 18/01/2025 22:50

No. Buffets ......I want a menu and to be served from that

Not queuing for dinner or a drink from the bar

Been to a few AI that you have menus, waiters etc, even have your own waiter on the beach for smoothies/snacks etc.
Not all AI's are buffet!

CrowleyKitten · 20/01/2025 21:09

my little snobby thing.
anyone else hate it when newsreaders say "buhbye" instead of "goodbye"
in most scenarios I don't mind it but it's always jarred on me with newsreaders, where I think they should be more formal than that.

You've just reminded me of something that is not a big deal and pretty irrelevant but has always irritated me. When grown adults say "it's slippy" instead of "slippery" like wtf?
Sounds so infantile

QuimCarrey · 24/01/2025 09:45

MN and holiday snobbery is gold. Not all MNers, probably not even the majority, but enough. There was a thread ages ago about ham and cheese sandwiches on holidays that had me in stitches. I must find it and read it again.

I feel like that about 'comfy'! Makes me squirm.

“Comfy”is in the dictionary and described as informal for comfortable.

Surely it’s an abbreviation and no different from saying “phone” as opposed to telephone.

awkigydrs · 24/01/2025 10:22

@StarlightLady so is the word "hubby", just because a word is in the dictionary, doesn't mean I have to like it!

suburburban · 24/01/2025 12:04

I don't like hubby or kids or cuppa
