Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

If it's an old lady thing to deal in lbs (pounds) and oz (ounces) then I am definitely guilty, especially when baking. It should be illegal to print recipes using grammes.

LadyRoughDiamond · 18/01/2025 16:53

I’ll admit it, happiness these days is a hot cup of tea, ITV3 and a melting moment biscuit. I’m 49.

I used to have a lovely "best" china dining set for 12. I used to love using it but when I left my house with a dining room I sold the lot to a dealer on Ebay. I don't even have a table for more than six people now and don't miss it at all.

I have got a set of christmas china which I haven't had out for a while but won't part with. My dining room is full of fabric and 4 sewing machines!

I've always liked a cup of tea and a sit down!

I did my ankle in ten years ago so I can no longer trip along in high heels. I never thought the day would come when I'd look at shoes and wonder if they'd be comfy but here we are.

I can't do late nights or very much if any alcohol anymore. I like an early dinner.

I'm regularly in bed by 9pm which is bliss.

On holiday I said to my DS that the drains there weren't as good as the ones at home. I've also moaned about the Spanish wiring. I'm turning into my DF!

I’m just about to go to bed now, but some lavender face cream on and listen to ‘In Our Time’ for a bit which will me send off to sleep,

@Lightswitchup please can I ask what brand/where you buy the lavender face cream from, it sounds lovely.

I found £800 in a copy of The Peoples Friend when I was clearing my great aunt’s house in 1972! It must have been her life savings ( also found quite a large wad in roll of steel wool). I didn’t know it was still going.

I have got pretty much the full house in terms of keep you warm things, nice smelly things and comfortable garment things but I AM an old lady so…..

Im off to investigate a foot spa though 😊

When my auntie was into creative writing she was told that the The People's Friend was, "One of the best" magazines to submit short stories to because - oh dear, how to put it? They'll print any old
"Offer excellent opportunities for a new writer."

Ha, this could be me, dancing on beaches in Ibiza in my youth. Now I am excited to research and visit Anglo Saxon churches and Roman forts.
Love chamomile tea and an early night in my PJs as well - bliss ❤️

Haha, I do sometimes recall the days of drink, drugs and dancing as I readjust my heated blanket and search for my embroidery scissors 😁I don’t miss that phase of life - it was great fun at the time, but so is this one!

(i got excited by an excellent Norman font recently in a church in avebury 🤓)

ViolettaDePensy · 18/01/2025 18:15

Someone just sent me this:

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Eyeliner and mascara on lower lashes. Think it’s just habit now. I tried without and have to admit I did look younger and fresher, but just can’t seem to give it up!

Unlike you I have continued to do this! I only do lower when I go out -for some reason.

Auburngal · 18/01/2025 18:20

I get excited by a handrail.

Due to a visual condition and poor balance, I do hate it when there's no handrail or wall to hang onto. I am ok going upstairs without one. I travel alone (UK and abroad) and strangers have held my hand.

Deathraystare · 18/01/2025 18:25

I love both Fenjal and Badedas. In summer I love Yardley talc especially jasmine and also Lily of the Valley (an 'old day' smell if ever there was one and I do not care!!).

No foot spa but my feet get nice and soft as does the rest of me with Jergens Cherry Almond body lotion. A beautiful smell. Does anyone remember those blue and white paste pots in school. Smells like that. I love Eau de Cologne. I have Je Reviens body spray which has a nice powdery smell. I also like Coty's L'aimant. Both of these were favourites with my Nan and now some of my favourites. Everyone goes on about 'Granny scents' but to me these are preferable to the 1000s of sugary sweet nonsense that would even make a 5 year old go 'Blah!'

I rarely feel the cold at work or at home but going out I forget it is not t shirt weather!

There was a similar post on here a while back with everyone talking about their bed jackets so I got one but lost it in a move. Anyway, as I say, I don't get cold where I am but it would be nice if I sat up in bed with a breakfast prepared by who??? I dunno!!!

Arraminta · 18/01/2025 18:29

Nowadays, I only like to read hardback books and always use a proper bookmark (I have a large collection of them).

Since turning 50 my cardinal rule is that I can happily go out for the day or I can happily go out for the evening - but I cannot possibly do both!

blueshoes · 18/01/2025 18:32

Comfy sock shoes with a thick sole.

Good job heels are not fashionable at the moment.

Smiffy58 · 18/01/2025 18:39

Recently turned 66, so I have my state pension! Practising old lady parking, going to the local pub for morning coffee and 🍰. Watching old films and knitting. Naps.
Having a vodka and tonic aperitif.
But then I am going to Rebellion in the summer, Blackpool's annual punk festival,!

I have got a set of christmas china which I haven't had out for a while but won't part with. My dining room is full of fabric and 4 sewing machines!

My kind of dining room 💪 Thankfully, I now have a sewing room 😀 It used to be the room to ‘throw everything in though, so lots of our house is full of stuff we have no storage for as a result - my husband likes to remind me of this.

I do love a good turnout!!

I’m 62. Love big pants, both going out and not going out, tea, music festivals, silence, train journeys, being polite to schoolchildren but rude to entitled middle-aged men, dark chocolate rose or violet creams, London, ballet, Homes under the Hammer, my dogs, being warm, sex.

Rictasmorticia · 18/01/2025 22:11

I have bought a small iron. First one in 15 years. The reason I bought the iron was because I now own a tablecloth and napkins.

My descent almost took a deeper plunge today when I eyed up the clean tea towels and thought……. Never fear I resisted and put them away.

I had 3 new pairs of maxi Sloggis in shades of blue delivered today. I was very excited to see the colours and patterns and I know they will cover my bum and come up to my waist. Love them.

Blue Maxi Sloggi!! 🤩
I have massive Maxi with a pearl on them. Feel like a Queen with them on

Bed at 9.30. HEAVEN

@ViolettaDePensy lightweight! 9 o'clock here when dh is home. However, when he's away we have a competition to see who can get to bed earliest! I have to put the tortoise to bed at 8 but sometimes I go to bed earlier with my book and pop downstairs later to settle her down, bloody lovely it is!

@SugarPlumFaerie and @StopTalkingSoMuch You are my people! I love rock and metal! 🖤

@Crikeyalmighty To be fair I've been shopping in there since my 20s when I bought some lovely evening dresses from their David Emmanuel range! Two have since gone to the big charity shop in the sky, but I've kept the other one. Bit regretful about getting rid of them, but I hadn't worn them for ages, and I need to get over it. The grey lacy one was my favourite, so I'm glad I kept that one! Note I never wore them as evening dresses, I wore them with combat boots, a denim jacket, spiky dog collar and stripy socks. 😁 Don't have the denim jacket or combat boots anymore either. 😟 Still wear stripy socks though!

@Snowmanscarf I love trains. Bit of a train nerd. 😁

Edit. I'm 36.
