Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

The one thing I’ve taken from this thread (of which I participated early on) is that the joy of the simple cannot be over estimated. Finding peace and happiness in small things that to others might be mundane, is key I think. Life isn’t always about the big things but the everyday things that make us happy and content. Things that make you inwardly sigh (or maybe even outwardly sigh) in that delightful way when life just feels so good. Warmth, and cosiness can be found in such small moments and it’s a nice thing to truly reflect on that.

I’ve also thought of a few more things I do that are old ladyish.
We’ve used the same gift tags on all our Christmas presents for 5 years now I think. Jokey ones (like when I got husband a bottle of sauvage aftershave but we call it sausage so I wrote sosig on the tag) can’t be reused but I keep them anyway because they make me laugh.
I have an old Yankee candle jar filled with ribbons and stuff ‘just in case’.
I went through a stage of ransacking tk maxx for lovely soaps with the sole intention of putting them in my draws to make my undies smell nice.
I have my every day pills in a pill box with days of the week on them. Only one is a prescription pill, the others are vitamins but if I don’t sort them I forget.
I’ve recently been eyeing up proper old lady nighties, the sort my granny wore but I also know I can’t stand anything riding up in the night or I get pissed off.
Brushed cotton bedding in the winter.
45 year old husband also likes to wander down the garden with his hands behind his back in that “old man” is stance. I know he’s thinking when he does that lol.
I think I want to learn to crochet to make a blanket.

I beliewe that you and your DH are just practising for a happy old age.

At 70 I'm the real deal but all I will admit to is Skechers for walking in the park, otherwise I wear Adidas Sambas.

I've recently binged-watched Shetland right from the first series - expect lusting after DI Perez is old lady!

I think that Perez is too angst ridden to provide decent sex.

see I prune twice. Once when the leaves are all off to take the long bits off to avoid wind rock plus any skinny or dead bits, and then again in march to shape and really shorten plus remove any dead bits and open up the airspace. I also have roses that have pretty hips which the birds eat so I leave them as alone as I can until march.

Yes I agree with a late autumn skim to help prevent wind rock.

A proper kettle that boils on the hob and whistles.
Tea pot when making more than one cup of tea.
Cake forks
Saucers - noticed many cafes have even stoped using them with cups

I’m so mad at M&S cafe for this. Surely you can expect a cup and saucer in M&S?

No but I live in the next village to where they are from and the postbox in my village has a Christmas one on still

I don't knit. There's a village about 7 miles from me that turn the centre into a Yarn Bomb with about 50 yarn bombs in the summer. Love it. So talented these people.

suburburban · 18/01/2025 11:39

@SicParvisMagna

Dh does that hand thing as well and his mother

He watches the birds by the back door (he's not yet 60Smile)

I make gift tags out of old Christmas cards with serrated scissors

It is nice to see how we get pleasure from small things, quite positive.
I worry a little about some attitudes being towards the obsessive, different mugs for different times of day, and different drinks. Attitudes to cats and pets. . (may have been mentioned on other occasions).
The early changing from day clothes to nightwear say by when the Archers is on I find strange. Coupled with going to bed early could it be seen that many women are 'opting out', are they withdrawing from life even their house into a very small world, their bed. I acknowledge that contact is still being maintained via TV or internet.

I remain Puzzled of Oxford.

Anne Cleeve's Perez was clearly of spanish extraction. Whilst Douglas Henshall has grown on me, he's not quite as hot as in the books.

I collect Emma Bridgewater mugs and plates and have currently got two sets, winter/spring and summer/autumn. I am not obsessive about it (much!) but it does add pleasure to my life. I suspect some of the heated blankets/early bed stuff is about economising on heating. I don't see anything about attitides to pets on this thread? but maybe I missed it.

Darlingx · 18/01/2025 13:10

I was taking a cut through as u do in London on foot and who should I spy across on the other side of the street only bloomin Alan Titchmarsh he looked rather terrified . Like a celebrity caught in the wild in an empty alleyway without bodyguards. He was so petrified bear in mind I am so much younger and have never seen him as an object of desire and isn’t he is rather too Alan Partridge to get my knickers in a twist so I kinda feel insulted 😂
Now Monty Dom he is like a gorgeous corduroy teddy bear.

Teddybear23 · 18/01/2025 13:20

I love Fenjal products, the scent is lovely but it’s expensive compared to others.

My SIL taught me the ways of the big pant. Im now obsessed. She said go 2 sizes up and get belly warmers. I scoffed, and now - at 50 - I am a HUGE fan of the oversized pant.

This has now become a thing, and now ive started buying almost everything several sizes bigger. Im just so bloody comfy all the time. Im a size 10 and currently sitting here in a toasty 2xl tracky with my big pants no bra. Its bliss!

Yes to the next sizes up!!
A colleague actually accused me of having lost weight and looking very smart after our xmas hols (teacher). I had simply bought larger clothes 😇😂

WhiteRosesAndCandles · 18/01/2025 14:08

I love an early night to read a book. I also love a weekend disco nap.

I'm an "old" lady of 65.

I hate -
Fenjal bubble baths
Footspas
Kriss Kross books
garden centres
Gardening programmes
Strictly Come Dancing, Bake Off, anything like that.
Any craft - crochet, knitting, lace work, etc.
Bingo

I DO like -
Rock music (favourite band is Linkin Park)
Very hot Indian food
Doc Martens
Ice skating

I’m joining you in your thread turnaround!

I’m 50 and do proper breaststroke, eyes looking at the floor of the pool and head almost completely underwater.

Ok 50 isn’t old but it’s old enough that people might expect genteel bobbing with neck sticking straight up.

Sorry OP I know it’s not what you asked (and it’s also not very interesting!)

notnorman · 18/01/2025 14:18

I like doing proper breaststroke and also being under my heated blanket by 8pm! I'm 48

I used to have a lovely "best" china dining set for 12. I used to love using it but when I left my house with a dining room I sold the lot to a dealer on Ebay. I don't even have a table for more than six people now and don't miss it at all.

Yes, I buy them extra large too, so I can give them a hottish wash and then tumble dry.

It wasn't the slippers or the dressing gown that made me ask but my gran liked People's Friend and Cliff Richards back in 1984/5 and it was grannyish then 😂

Edited

I found £800 in a copy of The Peoples Friend when I was clearing my great aunt’s house in 1972! It must have been her life savings ( also found quite a large wad in roll of steel wool). I didn’t know it was still going.

I have got pretty much the full house in terms of keep you warm things, nice smelly things and comfortable garment things but I AM an old lady so…..

Im off to investigate a foot spa though 😊

I tend to go for the larger sizes as being tall, the length between one size and the next one can be up to 1.5 inches. Then it doesn't roll up.

There you go, another old lady thing - using inches.

Also Big Pants.

Big Pants are great. Even Bridget Jones likes them 🤣
