Does anyone else give their car a name?

Or is it just me being odd.

I bought my first car in June after not driving at all for nearly 20 years. Which was the last time I drove with any regularity, the car I used then was a temporary loan from my in laws.

I’ve grown quite attached to it and called her Percy! I think some of it is down to the independence I’ve got back. The main reason I bought it was because my Dad was in hospital for a couple of months back in the summer and my Mum is no longer allowed to drive so it meant I could help my Mum out and take her to see my Dad. I feel now too that I can go to my parents whenever I need too.

I know ‘it’s only a car’, but she’s Percy to me.

I used to.....when I was a teenager😀

Mine and DH's first car (we were in our early 20s at the time) was called Sir Carsalot - we adored him and only parted ways when we needed a 5-door to get a car seat in and out more easily. DH checked his registration every year; this year he disappeared from public record, and we did feel a little bit sad.

We have tried to name the "new" car (we've had her over 8 years) but although she appears to be gendered, no name will stick and she doesn't have the "personality" of Sir C.

Yep. All of my cars have had names. I don’t care if people think it’s childish or odd, it makes me happy. I may also talk to my car and tell him where we’re going when setting out on a journey. I do like slightly quirky cars though so it’s easy to name them.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/01/2025 17:20

Our cars always have to have names. They're always the first name of a woman artist from the area we got the car, because I like a system.

Jumungo · 15/01/2025 17:22

Yup, I used to drive a Honda Civic called Rhonda.

My shared car with my husband has a less impulsive name because he likes to overthink things.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 15/01/2025 17:25

Me!!

EmeraldDreams73 · 15/01/2025 17:35

No, never! But dd20 has named hers, and dh astonished me the other day by asking what I thought he should name his (knackered, 20 yr old) Skoda! Each to their own...

Mumof1andacat · 15/01/2025 17:38

Don't have names, but my car is a boy, and dh's car is girl. Not sure why.

ItsSoStimulatingBeingYourHat · 15/01/2025 17:39

My last car was Pierre Le Papap.

My new (but old!) one still doesn’t have a name, as we haven’t bonded enough yet.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/01/2025 17:40

Yep. I had Hamish the Hyundai, and now I have Horace the Hyundai.

Cynic17 · 15/01/2025 17:40

Every car we have ever had has been given a name - I have been driving for over 40 years, and I can't imagine not naming them.

catin8oots · 15/01/2025 17:40

All my cars are called Pamela

DaftyLass · 15/01/2025 17:42

Ours is called Beulah

Tarkan · 15/01/2025 17:42

DH is the only driver between us but I still name the cars and he always uses the names I've picked. Grin Our last car was Leela and our current one is Sadie.

KnopkaPixie · 15/01/2025 17:42

All cars should have names. Same with battleships or cruise liners or boats and yachts. Same with aircraft. Same with space rockets. What is the problem?

All people of the quality name their conveyance of choice. I think it might be an old maritime tradition and all the more very goodly for being so.

If Christopher Columbus (or whatever his real name was) had set sail in Ship 1, Ship 2 and Ship 3 instead of the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinto history would be much more boring.

In fact, in honour of the maritime tradition, I think every time we get a new car we should smash a champagne bottle against it and have an official naming ceremony.

Yep...I do this too!

Azerothi · 15/01/2025 17:43

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/01/2025 17:44

Our cars have always been boys

Adamante · 15/01/2025 17:46

She's called Violet Vignale 💜

CMOTDibbler · 15/01/2025 17:47

All our cars have names. No system, apart from my last two Defenders who have been named after my great aunts

Yes! I named my first car but I didn’t have it very long so I named my second car (same model) the same name as I thought it was too good to waste. It’s been ten years and he’s falling apart but when I went to look at another car I cried on the way home because I can’t bring myself to sell/scrap him as he’s family now. Blush I am autistic so that’s my excuse, but if you think you’re odd, I’m absolutely barking. Grin

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 15/01/2025 17:50

My (now 12 year old) son named our cars, red rover- it was, baby blue-also was and newest one mercury.

wendywoopywoo222 · 15/01/2025 17:50

Yes my current car is flash 🚘

BotterMon · 15/01/2025 17:50

No none of our cars/vans have names but my HGV horsebox does. She's the 3rd and all have had female names. Probably as a rebellion against the ridiculous Yorkie ad!
