Does anyone else give their car a name?

Or is it just me being odd.

I bought my first car in June after not driving at all for nearly 20 years. Which was the last time I drove with any regularity, the car I used then was a temporary loan from my in laws.

I’ve grown quite attached to it and called her Percy! I think some of it is down to the independence I’ve got back. The main reason I bought it was because my Dad was in hospital for a couple of months back in the summer and my Mum is no longer allowed to drive so it meant I could help my Mum out and take her to see my Dad. I feel now too that I can go to my parents whenever I need too.

I know ‘it’s only a car’, but she’s Percy to me.

His name is Griff

branstonpickle28 · 15/01/2025 20:22

My first car was called Beast (it was a 7 seater). Second car, a Citroen Picasso was fondly named Pablo. Current car is a Juke, haven't had her long but is definitely female and will be christened either Grand-Old or Daisy (prefer Grand-Old!) 😂

Norniron24advice · 15/01/2025 20:23

Always named my car.

My last one was Ethel. She was like a friendly elderly aunt to us.

My latest is Kristie. She thinks she's racier than she actually is.

Thepossibility · 15/01/2025 20:28

My old car was Goldie. She had to have a name because she had a lot of personality. None of my other cars have had names because they had none.

IBlameTheDog · 15/01/2025 20:34

Absolutely!

Melvyn Mini
Glenda Golf
Felicity Fiesta
Jesse Juke.

It would feel rude to refer to them as 'the car' 😂

ImWearingPantaloons · 16/01/2025 05:40

I named my parents car when I was a little girl and have done so ever since.

I see no compelling reason to stop.....

Littlebitpsycho · 16/01/2025 05:48

My car is called Maud, she's a massive boat of a 4x4 and Maud the Merc seemed to suit so well 🥰

I had a Peugeot (normally would be called pugsley or pugston) that had a number plate starting MD72 so he was mad dog 72.

I now have a bmw. When I got it, there was a really funny overly German name so I thought I'll call it that but it was so German I forgot it. Now he's schweinsteiger after the footballer.

FrangipaniBlue · 16/01/2025 23:10

Current one is called Bruno.

Not long after purchase he caused us a bit of bother that cost quite a lot of money (and months in the garage) to put right.

He is so named because every time someone asked if the car issue was sorted we would say "we don't talk about Bruno"

😂

thiskiwicanfly · 19/01/2025 10:34

My first car was a bilious yellow station wagon called Ralph, then an early MX5 called bubbles. The current car is nameless -too bland to have one.

Psipsinas · 19/01/2025 11:25

I used to have beautiful powder blue Triumph Herald convertible called Gerald.I sold him 5 years ago as we were moving overseas. I check on DVLA site every now and then and see that he's SORN'd ever since I sold him. It's a shame as he's such fun to drive around.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/01/2025 11:30

My car has always had a name. Usually something to the reg. My current one is Olivia Benson.

I had a red and white Herald convertible called Colin for several years . Great fun cars

I always name my cars. My current one is Heidi (the Hyundai).

Love this!

My car is Helga the Hyundai. When I booked her in for an mot the mechanic asked the make and model and I told him she was a Hyundai and that I wasn't sure of the model but that she was called Helga if that was any help. Apparently that was no help at all 🤷‍♀️.

MummaMummaMumma · 19/01/2025 11:40

Yes, all of them have. But, most have been car models with people names 🤣 or very closely rhymed!

NachoCheesed · 19/01/2025 11:47

Our cars are called Agatha and Monty. Agatha is a beetle with her name on her boot. Monty is too grown up for that as he's a very sensible Mondeo

minsmum · 19/01/2025 11:48

My first car was a Renault 5 so course he was called Napoleon, it would take too long to list the others, but my new car is called Suzy

TrickyLicky · 19/01/2025 12:20

My Mercedes is named Sheila (Friday Night Dinner fans will get this!)

Snowmanscarf · 19/01/2025 12:21

Of course. Old car was Cleo. New one is Betsy. The registration determines the car’s name.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 19/01/2025 12:39

Always! My first car was called Annette (the Chevette). I’ve had Jenny (she had a really big boot(y). Perry - our first non binary car. We couldn’t decide their gender. Nowadays I drive Pip. I didn’t look at a colour chart when I ordered it. The colour was ‘Fuji Sunset Red’. It arrived and it’s definitely…orange 😂 the colour of a Cox’s Orange Pippin - Pip for short. I name them with my DDs…I can’t imagine ever not!

‘Bitchface’ 😬

Quoted wrong post- sorry!

ItsSoStimulatingBeingYourHat · 19/01/2025 14:00

Eek sorry @minsmum that was for @TrickyLicky and Sheila the Mercedes!

Squidtentacles · 19/01/2025 14:33

I don't refer to my car by a name, no, but I have decided what it would be - Veronica - because of the letters in the number plate!
