Does anyone else give their car a name?

Or is it just me being odd.

I bought my first car in June after not driving at all for nearly 20 years. Which was the last time I drove with any regularity, the car I used then was a temporary loan from my in laws.

I’ve grown quite attached to it and called her Percy! I think some of it is down to the independence I’ve got back. The main reason I bought it was because my Dad was in hospital for a couple of months back in the summer and my Mum is no longer allowed to drive so it meant I could help my Mum out and take her to see my Dad. I feel now too that I can go to my parents whenever I need too.

I know ‘it’s only a car’, but she’s Percy to me.

My Jeep Cherokee was called Pocohontas. My dad said, "I don't think Pocohontas was a Cherokee."
"Oh, stop being so pendantic, Dad."

Yes always - Why not? - our current car is Daphne - our previous one was Betty!

Wilma55 · 15/01/2025 17:52

I try to make a name from the number plate. Had admit defeat this time and named my Citroen, Ronnie.

Floralnomad · 15/01/2025 17:52

All of my cars have had names . The first car that was fully mine was a Renault 5 called Clarence . The current ones are Sylvester and Maurice , they are always male .

Minimum85percentCocoa · 15/01/2025 17:52

Had one called Freda because it was a 3 door, and towards the end the last one was not so affectionately named Rusty but I’ve now realised current one doesn’t have a name so need to think of one.

mondaytosunday · 15/01/2025 17:52

Yes -current car is called Cindy, short for Cinnamon as that's the colour. We've had a Spencer, Rocco, Cherry, Anastasia..

v4life · 15/01/2025 17:53

Yes our cars have names. As they are tesla’s when we ever need support they can see the car name which shows up on the interface when you are driving around and always mention how nice it is to see one that isn’t called Tessie.

DuckonaBike · 15/01/2025 17:55

Yes, obviously. And my bike, and several household appliances.

Time40 · 15/01/2025 17:59

Of course. It would be very cruel not to give them names - they do have feelings and souls, after all.

tonyhawks23 · 15/01/2025 17:59

All cars should have names definitely

AcrossthePond55 · 15/01/2025 17:59

Not all of them, just the ones where names have popped into our heads.

Mine prior to marriage were Duane & Pierre. DH's cars/trucks prior to marriage have all been called Gloria. Since marriage we've had Brownie, Archie, Eggbert and two prior cars with no names Our current car has no name but our pick up truck is 'White Lightning'.

MrsAvocet · 15/01/2025 18:00

Yes, cars, bikes, household appliances etc all have names in our house.

Time40 · 15/01/2025 18:01

I remember reading a news report years ago where an airport car park was running a scheme where you could send a postcard to your car and they would put it under the windscreen wipers. I've always wondered if that was really true ... and if anyone did.

Eviebeans · 15/01/2025 18:04

My favourite car was called Mabel

mitogoshigg · 15/01/2025 18:05

No, but dd and her dp do, unfortunately their car has just gone to car heaven aka been written off

CornishPastiche · 15/01/2025 18:08

I always name cars; surely it would be rude not to 😊 especially if you have more that one car in the household.

In my view it seems far nicer to say “are we taking Flint?” Instead of saying “are we taking the Ford, Range, BM?” or whatever.

We currently have Flint, Slate and Glacier as our car family.

BBQPete · 15/01/2025 18:12

Yes. All of my cars have always had names.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/01/2025 18:21

Yes, all our cars have had names including Byron, Effie, Dotty & currently we have Cagney.

KnopkaPixie · 15/01/2025 18:27

My Grandad had a bike with a childseat on the back called Daisy to put me in. He named her after the music hall song that went like this:

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do.
It might be a (forgotten this bit) marriage,
I can't afford a carriage,
But you'll look sweet,
Upon the seat,
Of a bicycle made for two.

Perhaps for strange Freudian reasons I've always had a man with a motorbike that I can sit on the back on. And the bikes have always had names. This is getting too embarrassing and outing.

bozzabollix · 15/01/2025 18:29

Too right we do, we have The German, Hernandez and Viggo. The German was named in a more normal way but it changed. I think it’s nice for a car to have a name, they accompany you through life and its various challenges.

Member278307 · 15/01/2025 18:32

My mini is called tootsie. She's beautiful

LegoLandslide · 15/01/2025 18:34

Yes, I have a grey car that beeps at me a lot (engine lights etc), it's called Grumpy Gary.

I would never use it in conversation though- it's strictly private!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/01/2025 18:34

Mine is called Sophie, previous one was called Doris. It's respectful to name them!

Lanneederniere · 15/01/2025 18:46

Our two Volvos are named Sven (XC60) and Bjorn (V40), even though they've probably never been near Sweden.

RampantIvy · 15/01/2025 18:47

No. I don't name cars.

Is it a woman thing? Do many men name cars?
