Does anyone else give their car a name?

Or is it just me being odd.

I bought my first car in June after not driving at all for nearly 20 years. Which was the last time I drove with any regularity, the car I used then was a temporary loan from my in laws.

I’ve grown quite attached to it and called her Percy! I think some of it is down to the independence I’ve got back. The main reason I bought it was because my Dad was in hospital for a couple of months back in the summer and my Mum is no longer allowed to drive so it meant I could help my Mum out and take her to see my Dad. I feel now too that I can go to my parents whenever I need too.

I know ‘it’s only a car’, but she’s Percy to me.

All my cars have had a name and all of them have been male - until the one I have right now. She's definitely a girl. (Do I sound mad, yes, probably!).

DH also names his cars. This one is red and, interestingly, named 'Red'.

No. I don't name cars.

Is it a woman thing? Do many men name cars?

Oh, they do. We've had Caroline the "Vintage" Cortina, Baby the "Vintage" Triumph motorbike...

Veryoldandtired · 15/01/2025 18:54

I give cars names that roughly correspond with their number plates. Neighbour’s cars sometimes get names too. Our neighbours car has letters BDSM in it 🫣 don’t ask me about its name 🙈

Mamadothehump · 15/01/2025 18:54

No, but my 17 year old does. Makes me cringe a little bit

Octoberdreaming · 15/01/2025 18:56

Yes I always name my cars. My first car was a boy and the last two have been female.

MoonWoman69 · 15/01/2025 19:02

Of course! He's very high maintenance at the moment, but I wouldn't be without Malcolm Mondeo! 😁

Yourinmyspot · 15/01/2025 19:02

Glad I’m not the only one! I felt sorry for Percy sat in the cold all last week. Was glad to take her out on Sunday.

My neighbour has an orange VW camper that she calls Basil.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/01/2025 19:07

I used to have a black Fiat 500. His name was Nero.

I am now on my second Volvo. The first was Sven. This one is Sven 2.0.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/01/2025 19:07

I used to have Jane Honda, Henry Honda and now I have ( unrelated) Finley.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 15/01/2025 19:09

Sometimes. Our current car is a Hyundai Ioniq. The name reminded us a bit of the name of a character called Uniqua in a cartoon series our dc watched incessantly when they were little, so that's what she's called!

My mum always had Minis (back when they were actually mini!) and she always named them. My favourite was called Freddie. He was purple and had a hole in the floor you could see the road through Shock

wizzbitt · 15/01/2025 19:12

My DD (7) randomly called our car Armpit when she was about 4. So that's her (yeah she identifies as she/her) name now.

SeaToSki · 15/01/2025 19:17

I always name them. Sometime its a riff on their number plates and sometimes on the model..so tight now I have a Ford Flex and she is called Flexie. My DS has taken on the tradition, he has a Rav4 and has called her Ravi

NameChanges123 · 15/01/2025 19:18

No, but I'm going to give it one...

That's hilarious, we got a Ravi last week too!

My car doesn't have a name.

Neither does my house.

If it doesn't turn its head when you shout it out, it doesn't need a name.

Iheartmysmart · 15/01/2025 19:29

@AllProperTeaIsTheft My mum also had a classic mini with a hole in the floor you could see the road through but hers was called Clementine because she was orange. I had a yellow classic mini called You Bastard because bits kept falling off him and the headlights would randomly go out.

I let DS name my car once and spent a couple of years driving round in Graham the Invincible Toad. Never again!

ilovesooty · 15/01/2025 19:34

My last car didn't have a name. My current car is called Roxanne.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/01/2025 19:39

I had a Ford Anglia ( classic) called Earnshaw, because I was unsure if he would start.

bookworm14 · 15/01/2025 19:41

Ours is called Bella. DD decided that was its name - no idea why!

frugalkitty · 15/01/2025 19:59

Mine is called Scarlett O'Cara 🚗

elp30 · 15/01/2025 20:06

I own a Mini Cooper that I call, "Sir Nigel Revvington III" or just "Nige" for short.

X72 · 15/01/2025 20:10

Blue or Silver.

I try to make a name from the number plate. Had admit defeat this time and named my Citroen, Ronnie.

My last van was Old Hairy Bastard. The registration was OHB, and in addition it was a mechanical nightmare.

Mingenious · 15/01/2025 20:18

My cars don’t but my camper does and quite a nice name too, although I’m not going post it here as may be outing.

Tbh I usually refer to it as “the fucking van” because something else has gone wrong with it.
