Such a nasty sordid case, and it now seems like his ex-wife is being implicated? He painted himself as an ally and a feminist. Sick of this fucking rhetoric with men. Are there no decent men anywhere?

Anyone with any doubts should listen here

Am gutted as I have so loved his books.

Part 3 now of the Marilyn Manson thing. Audio of him:

"I would never rape you. That's the cruelest thing you can say to a girl in a funny sort of way..."

"I'm not a sexist... A misogynist maybe.... It's like. ... I like tits, but not what they're attached to .."

He really is foul.

Lalgarh · 16/01/2025 22:25

The horror show make up on him reminds me of late period Pete Burns aka the trio with Jimmy Savile and George Galloway in that infamous celebrity big brother

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/01/2025 04:52

@godmum56 not on this order of magnitude, but his strong reputation is: creepy, lowkey sexual harraser, somehow simultaneously highly arrogant and deeply insecure. Phenomenal writer though. I won't get rid of his books. I think they're incredible, but I fully believe he's a dick. I believe people can be dicks and also great artists.

Lalgarh · 17/01/2025 11:08

The main takeaway from that Marilyn Manson exposé was how much of a dreary narcissist he is. And the stuff about hating women. Well he says himself he's terrified of what they can do. The self proclaimed Antichrist Superstar. Terrified of little teenaged girls.

The clique of fan girls (and 1 boy) at the end doubling down on all the women accusing him as liars just .. ugh

Was Savile in that? I remember Galloway and Burns.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/01/2025 11:44

Oh yes, I do remember it now, must have blocked it from my memories! How strange.

I had forgotten about that too.

Sounds like a complete bastard. I'm deeply suspicious of any man who goes on about being a feminist, while also being 'sex-positive', TWAW and into open relationships etc.

There are some interesting bits in that Vulture article. One, that his readership is described as an 'inherently vulnerable community'. Two, that his depictions of rape, torture and murder of women were 'largely perceived as evidence of his empathy'.

Fucking hell. I think there is a real collective naivety going on here. These people know how to find and exploit the vulnerable, and somehow get lauded for their 'empathy'.

Sex positive, writes about female rape etc and it turns out he gets off on having painful and degrading (only for the women obviously!) sex with girls who are vulnerable and decades younger than him. Oh, what a surprise!

teawamutu · 17/01/2025 13:07

Used to really like NG's books - like many, Good Omens was my gateway drug - and revered the man.

I feel fucking awful now because I introduced my sons - both shy, creative teenagers - to his work. My eldest actually followed him on Tumblr and chatted about writing with him, and NG was incredibly kind and supportive.

DS1 is devastated at losing a role model and being made to feel complicit.

The only comfort right now, as he says, is that NG deliberately crafted a devoted, 'progressive' fandom - a wokescreen - from the most fanatical, cancellation prone, unforgiving demographic on earth and there will be no way back for the evil fucker. May he rot in the obscurity and scorn he will loathe.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/01/2025 16:17

I've only watched the first episode of the Marilyn Manson programme and already I'm struck by the similarities to Gaiman's offences and Tate's preachings.

Yeah, it was just an aside in the Vulture article (I think it was that one) about his he doesn’t believe in / like either foreplay or lubrication. I can’t imagine many women, even if they’re into BDSM (I’m super-sceptical of the whole “kink” scene anyway), liking to have sex with neither of those things.

Sex without any lubrication is a particularly nasty misogynist practice, eg. in some African countries where FGM is a custom - the idea being that lubrication is evidence of a lascivious woman. It’s known as an extremely painful and physically harmful practice which can cause women serious genital damage and trauma. Treating it like it’s just something on the kink menu is disgraceful. Any man who gets off on sex that physically hurts women is an abusive misogynist shit, and IDGAF if that’s considered “kink shaming”.

And the whole “master and slave” thing is not only inherently abusive but just SO FUCKING BORING. Gaiman: what a predictable, boring abusive shite, just like any other abusive shite with his tired old lame-ass “master” rubbish.

Although the Guardian has been equivocal in its reporting, at least Marina Hyde has much more of a grip:

Marina Hyde, you little beauty! I’ve always liked her and this is an excellent piece.

So sick of men and their grim philias.

Middlemarch123 · 17/01/2025 18:51

I used to read The Graveyard Book to my year 7 form, they loved it. Thank goodness I left teaching. The man’s lowest of the low.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/01/2025 18:54

The master and slave thing just speaks of being such an inadequate fucking sad sack.

Lentilweaver · 17/01/2025 18:56

I lost it today and ranted to DH " The biggest problem in the world is fucking male violence. Sick to death of it!".
Luckily he agreed.

Don’t take away from this awful case by complaining about how people don’t like nasty bigots like jk Rowling. Two completely different scenarios, by Christ transphobes can’t be quiet even for a second

I initially saw a lot of people dismissing the accusations as since sort of terf plot against an ally who couldn't possibly have done anything so bad.

And I still see people comparing him almost favourably to JK on social media when discussing how to deal with books by 'problematic' authors so it's not completely irrelevant to the conversation.

Lalgarh · 17/01/2025 20:30

Speaking of Dreadful TERF monsters, Kathleen Stock has zeroed in on the Sex People element of this and 'oh it was Nonconsensual non consent' stuff

I love Kathleen Stock. She is such a great and sardonic writer.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/01/2025 21:13

That’s a jolly good article. Humans want to do all sorts of things that are bad for us and they feel good at the time. The framing of BDSM as some kind of crusading moral good is such unmitigated bollocks

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/01/2025 21:22

Disturbia81 · 17/01/2025 18:45

So sick of men and their grim philias.

It's not philia or any sort of love that drives this behaviour.

It's misogyny. It's tyranny. Power over the powerless. It's so easy for men in positions of power to do this that it has become a fact of life for women and children. Something we need to negotiate in order to stay safe.

Gaiman may write good stuff, but his behaviour is that of any shit husband, father or boss. Predictable, banal and damaging to the women unfortunate enough to encounter him.
