Maximusdecimus · 14/01/2025 07:06

Such a nasty sordid case, and it now seems like his ex-wife is being implicated? He painted himself as an ally and a feminist. Sick of this fucking rhetoric with men. Are there no decent men anywhere?

Anyone with any doubts should listen here

Am gutted as I have so loved his books.

Wasn’t he a “trans women are women” sort?

Yes, which makes sense because he clearly doesn't think women are actually equal humans.

It's just a feeling in someone's head.

lolaflores · 15/01/2025 08:56

Are either of them fit parents?
AP knew what he had done to the "nanny" (unpaid and vulnerable to further exploitation). She knew this woman was in danger. She knew NG would not be able to act decent tky.

AP didn't procure her but she knew the place she was going to was absolutely unsafe. There was no intent but she failed in her responsibility as an employer and a parent too.

Pair of fuckers.
Careless people who are too cool and gifted to care about the people they use to get to what they want.

WongKarWhy · 15/01/2025 09:30

I've never met Gaiman, but I had various dealings with AP many years ago, and she really is a vile individual in her own right. I think she's probably a narc (I know that's thrown around a lot on MN, but she's definitely "off" in that kind of way).

Obviously, Gaiman is the main abuser here though, and I've seen too many people focusing on her role in this nightmare and almost excusing him, which is quite baffling!

I just hope someone is taking good care of their son.

A lot of people who rushed to cancel JK havent actually read her initial essay. No sensible person could object to it. It was perfectly sane.

My feelings towards JK aren't about the original essay, they are about subsequent behaviour. The essay was good. But she has said things since that I intenseley dislike. But this isn't about her.

justteanbiscuits · 15/01/2025 10:05

I packed away my extensive collection of his books a few months back when it started becoming so clear what had happened - but the reports now are so shocking. I have signed books, drawn in by him. My favourite paperback book in the whole world. 20 years ago I was quite the Gaiman groupie. Going to signings, readings, events. He was always so lovely to his fans, signing for hours and hours. Then the rumours started, especially once his relationship with AP became public. But - Terry Pratchett obviously thought he was a good man so...

I cannot describe how utterly disgusted I am at his behaviour. It's so much worse than the "creepy middle aged man" rumours I had been hearing. A friend knows him and is also incredibly shocked.

Thank fuck I hadn't got the planned tattoo thanks to the rumours over the years (though, no one would know it was Gaiman linked, just a very small, random part of one of his many books).

Are there any good men for my sons to look up to anymore?

BorgQueen · 14/01/2025 20:42

It’s absolutely connected.
All the twaw wankers have turned out to be at best, dodgy, at worst, highly abusive sexual predators.

What, like Terry Pratchett.

I think the word you're looking for is SOME.

I feel a bit sad for the actors who have presumably worked hard in the series he's written. I don't think I can bring myself to watch them when they come out.

He's not writing series 3 of Good Omens, he's been removed from it.

PandoraSox · 15/01/2025 10:14

He has broken his silence.

Eta: Like most of us, I’m learning, and I'm trying to do the work needed, and I know that that's not an overnight process.

He is 64 FFS.

WeGotCows · 15/01/2025 10:17

”Feminist” men are nearly always predatory men putting themselves in a position to access vulnerable women.

WeGotCows · 15/01/2025 10:20

But - Terry Pratchett obviously thought he was a good man so...

I’ve long realised that you can’t rely on a man’s judgment on other men. They’re all in it together.

I’ve often wished that women would defend women like men defend men.

I know. But Terry Pratchett. I wouldn't listen to the opinion of other men by 99% of men. But Terry Pratchett. And like I said, I have a friend who is (was) a friend of NG. Yes, I feel bad for not listening harder to the rumours - but back then it was just "middle aged guy who likes sleeping with his fans" - nothing to hint at anything being non consensual. As SOON as that news started coming out, I listened harder and believed every word.

i would say that he didn't know he was a bad one. I am not aware that he ever defended him from these allegations. I haven't followed the story and wonder when the information came out.

Barbadossunset · 15/01/2025 10:40

Being a thoroughly unpleasant person and being a talented writer are not mutually exclusive.

Indeed. Talent has no bearing on personality.

letsallchant · 15/01/2025 10:48

'Do the work'? How hard is it to understand that rape is wrong and pressuring women into sex is wrong? Who gets to their 60s and doesn't know that? Jesus.

Lalgarh · 15/01/2025 10:55

Is Gaiman still a scientologist? The Vulture article mentioned he was almost akin to royalty courtesy of his parents role, and it fairly clearly shows he's still impacted on by whatever they did to him growing up.

I don't think he was n that Going Clear documentary about ppl who've left them

RedLightsStopSigns · 15/01/2025 11:00

He’s disgusting. What a fucking weasel. I found the podcast really hard to listen to, as it was so disturbing and also echoed experiences that I, and female friends of mine, have discussed in the past (involving similar power imbalances). He makes me very angry.

No, I was saying, cripes, I just read this! No intent to chastise you at all. It is a vile read...

Never hero worship celebrities.

And even if Terry Pratchett was a total saint, towards the end of his life, for quite a few years his judgement and capacity was impaired to various extents.

@lolaflores you have nailed their ugly arrogance

lolaflores · 15/01/2025 17:02

It never ceases to amaze me at what happens to some people as they gain great fame and wealth. Their shedding of empathy and decency just seems to get as bloated as their bank balance and ego.

was he ever empathetic or decent?

lolaflores · 15/01/2025 17:09

With regard to Terry Pratchett; whilst I am a massive fan for many years and know so little about him personally, I feel that his life with dementia had been ongoing for sometime before it was public knowledge. And, I'm sure Gaiman was as charismatic and charming to TP and his family as he was to the world at large.

It seems that the people who saw the disgusting piece of waste that he really was were sadly those he treated as slaves and receptacle for his abuse.

He was probably many things to many people but not many, or certainly those who's continued support he valued, knew the worst side of him. As has been said too often in too many circumstances like this; he was hiding in plain sight. In his world there were those people who were disposable and then other who were of value. And I doubt his sons well being ranks very high amongst all of that. Pure shite bag

Uricon2 · 15/01/2025 17:10

@lolaflores Careless people who are too cool and gifted to care about the people they use to get to what they want.

Quite.

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby.

I hope that this doesn't happen with Neil Gaiman/Amanda Palmer.
