For the better, obviously.

Can be a thing, person, activity, place...anything really.

Mine is trig bagging. It's so much fun and gets you out there, to unexpected and unknown places.

What's yours?

Ooh things that def make my life easier or better which I've adopted in the last couple of years-

Tweezers with a built in light
Epilator instead of razor or waxing
Tinted body lotion/moisturiser
Doc marten boots (soft leather ones)
Trainers that fit my flat feet
Heated throw
Airfryer
Kindle unlimited and listening to books for free via Text-to-speach
Ear buds
Proper steam iron with water tank

But best by far is my indoor walking pad! I try to walk for an hour a day but it's too icy/cold in Scotland at the moment and very dark so I've been walking indoors instead. Not as great as outdoors but fab not to miss it 😄

My Henry Quick - cordless, upright Henry which is much more portable. All other cordless vacuums have failed me but this is as good as the "normal" Henry with the added benefit of lightness. It has little scent pods which release a fragrance as you vacuum. Daft I know but it makes the process a tiny bit better.

I actually cook my (thoroughly washed) rice on the hob with a (perfectly) calibrated rice to water ratio, and am delighted to have entered the realm of the intelligentsia!

Me too! Perfect every time!

I've recently discovered the world doesnt implode if you work on a system of one person, one washload - none of this separating out lights, darks, washing, drying, then sorting again.

Each person has a laundry bag, it goes into the washer, out of washer to dry, back into the bag to their room to go away! So much easier!

That if you walk in a zig zag up a steep hill it is so much easier. I live up a very steep hill and I never get out of breath now.

You might look abit silly.😂

For those thinking of a rice cooker, we don't have the space for one but use the Lekue microwave one, available from Lakeland: it does keep the rice warm for a whle after cooking, and has always given me perfect results with white and brown rice.

I can't believe this has become the rice cooker thread 😂

Can I ask how you went about getting a diagnosis, I'm 56 and have never "fitted in" and have suspected for a few years that I'm either ADD or ASD, though I don't know much about either.
Thanks.

Sorry if already suggested - look at your "right to choose" the company who assesses you - it should reduce wait times.

A tabletop dishwasher - I'm disabled and struggle to stand, so used to have to wash pots in small bursts when I was able, but have a tiny kitchen, so no room for a normal one. This has absolutely been a life changer.

we got one last year too! it's been fantastic. we have such a tiny kitchen, and like you I have pain and fatigue issues, and keep a folding bar stool in there so I can do stuff.
I kept saying, I have nowhere to PUT one. our counterspace is so limited. until my mum pointed out that it can go on the draining board, if I'm not washing by hand. and it's really made life so much easier.

I clicked on the trip bagging link and am still none the wiser!

I would say a best buy was a special suction tool that removes the kickboards from below the kitchen cupboards really simply, they just come right away on the tool.

Are the slow cooker liners single use plastic? Not very keen on that sadly.

agree. and I always find the slow cooker dish SO easy to wash. it barely needs a rinse and a wipe to be spotless.

usernother · 11/01/2025 23:12

@LondonPapa Why would you be on the floor looking for pans? Don’t you hang them? How bizarre.

Hang them? God, no. I think that looks awful, really untidy and cluttered. All my appliances, and pans etc are in lots of big kitchen drawers.

A big sturdy tabletop sellotape dispenser. Indispensable coming up to Christmas.

That after being retired for 8 years I don’t have to get up early.
I always felt so guilty but now 10 am is the new 7 am.

Thanks to late sleeping young adults students back from uni for Christmas, I've also discovered guilt free lie ins too this Christmas holidays (I work in a school so term time only). I used to think I need to be up relatively early and be productive during school holidays to be a proper adult. I let the guilt go this Christmas and just woke up when I naturally woke up. I'f I'd gone to sleep very late then sometimes I woke up near 10am, pressed Snooze a few times, read the news etc on my phone in bed then finally deigned to get up aiming for before midday but if it was after I didn't care.

Result was that the house went to shit, but I felt amazing, my blood pressure came down and I looked relaxed and healthy for the first time in a few years! I can smell retirement!

I have a washable silicone slow cooker liner - yes you have to wash it, but it's easier to carry about than the heavy pot. In fact I have three - one is for the whole pot and the other is divided into two so you can cook two different things, They are reusable so less plastic waste. I put the lid in the dishwasher and drape the liner over it and it seems to wash fine. (Sorry about the long link.)

Do the tabletop dishwashers need to be plumbed in like the ordinary ones?

some need to be plumbed in. ours does. others have a reservoir that you fill before each wash, then a pipe that you can run into the sink to drain it.

@Pleasegodgotosleep can you tell me more about your walking mat? I've been looking at them for getting steps in at my desk, but reluctant to gamble £100 or so on Amazon

Mine is only a teeny tiny one… DP bought me some lovely new knives for Christmas, as I’d been moaning on for ages about my shabby old ones.

There was a veg peeler in the box - I’ve never even held one before (I’m the wrong side of 59 🫢 ). I’ve always used veg knives.

So I picked this peeler up and had a go…. Wow! What a discovery😁 My fridge is now full of boxes of peeled veg! The Ddog was treated to carroty ribbons in her dinner! Fabulous thing!

How did I get to my age and not know??

the ones with a serrated edge make THE best roast potatoes. lovely and crispy

rosemole · 11/01/2025 23:22

What is a walking mat??

CrowleyKitten · 11/01/2025 23:25

considering he's nearly 5, it's not really recent, but MY CAT.
Our landlady is very anti dog, and we're both dog people.
I have had cats growing up, among a huge menagerie of other pets.
as an adult (from pre teen) I've always had rats. wonderful little animals, but their lifespan was getting too much for me. so I decided, if we can't have a dog, we should get a cat, as they ARE allowed, and I just needed a pet that would last more than a few years to heal my heart.
and he's everything I hoped he would be, and more. he sleeps on my chest most nights, purring into my face. he adores his people. he's affectionate, and loves cuddles. and I just can't believe what a huge change having him has been in my life.

It's called a Mobvoi 3 in 1 and is one of the more robust/hybrid ones that can handle up to a light jog (12km per hour) - although I don't do that! It has a support bar you can bring up for faster walking or you can leave it flat for under a desk. Measures speed, distance, time & calories. You can set a manual incline if you want. It has a safety cord you can wear if you bring the support bar up. It also has an app you can link to phone/or wear os. It has one of the best reviews when comparing walking pads from other retailers. Sells via Amazon so returns are simple if required and it's currently on sale 😀.

I only watched the first Bridget Jones film recently (yes, yes I know). This made me think of the blue soup incident.

I want a heated throw but Argos are sold out. Any good contenders? I think they will help me and DS go to sleep quicker.

My favourite thing over the last year has been sleep masks. I have one with a gel insert, which is comfy and a bit like a weighted blanket for the eyes, and building a collection via TK Maxx of these which are lightweight and rather lovely.

https://www.theirnibs.com/products/eye-mask-satin-navy-peacock

Also got DH a Panda pillow for Christmas and he really rates it.

a good sleep mask is a game changer. the ones I use. I was sent one to review (amazon vine) and thought I'd try it, review it. but probably not continue using it.
it has a lot of padding around the outside, that really blocks out the light, but also means it doesn't feel like it's holding your eyes closed. you can blink normally, and it's so comfortable. and I've slept SO much better since getting it.

LushLemonTart · 11/01/2025 23:58

I got this padded sleep mask. It's fab. Blocks out all the light.

This! A "potato ricer"! It may have been around for hundreds of years but this is the first time I've ever seen one and I feel this is going to Revolutionise Everything!!

depends how you like your mash. I don't like mine too smooth, I like it to still have some texture to it. but if you like it really smooth, they're good, but they're a pain in the bum to clean
