For the better, obviously.

Can be a thing, person, activity, place...anything really.

Mine is trig bagging. It's so much fun and gets you out there, to unexpected and unknown places.

What's yours?

That I actually do have ADHD, having suspected for three and half years and spent my entire life feeling like I exist in a parallel universe a lot of the time, where things are easy/make sense to everyone except me.

I'm no taking medication (although it's an option for the future) but just knowing that I am who I am and don't need to try and conform to being/thinking like everyone else has lifted a massive weight off. I always just thought it was me being wrong.

Can I ask how you went about getting a diagnosis, I'm 56 and have never "fitted in" and have suspected for a few years that I'm either ADD or ASD, though I don't know much about either.
Thanks.

A pull out pan drawer.
No longer do I have to lie flat on the floor with a torch in search of a pot or pan.
My life is complete.

This
Similar thrill to having a carousel thingy in a kitchen cabinet. I have the drawers x2 but not a carousel in current house. Idk if they can be retro fitted?

Have just discovered a microwave and intensive bake setting on my microwave. A had a crispy baked potato ready in 15 minutes!

Which microwave please?

No longer agreeing to something that makes life difficult for me so it's easier for someone else

I make my rice in the Instant Pot after years of making terrible pan rice, followed by years of just not making any at all.

@JudgeJ if it's any consolation my mother, too, was a lone competent maker of pan rice surrounded by imbeciles with appliances. She was visibly disappointed in me on the rice making front

We only have three traditional cupboards (glasses, utility/ under sink / appliance s) in the kitchen - the rest are drawers and pull out larder drawers which have lights in them - great move when designing.

Prepping anything to do with school run the night before.

Ordering all the Christmas bits the school requests in the Nov before and stick it in your calendar to remind, Christmas jumpers, tombola chocolate, teachers gifts and cards. Put it in a box and pull out when required.

Standby gifts and cards for parties for kids - wrapped and ready to add a card.

Heated blankets for everyone to warm bed before getting in - kids are getting to sleep faster,

Foot measure thingy for the kids - order all shoes online now.

You don't have to interact with family that do not respect you. Blood is not thicker than water,

Amen to the last one

I wonder if they make rice cookers

I actually cook my (thoroughly washed) rice on the hob with a (perfectly) calibrated rice to water ratio, and am delighted to have entered the realm of the intelligentsia!

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 11/01/2025 18:43

Breaking news: MENSA have abandoned their previous entry tests and will now ask applicants to boil rice in a pan.

I have just recently discovered you can call a meeting if someone is rude to you and ask that person what exactly they ment by that.
So far it was a delight watching them appologise and then thank you for making it a private issue.
Fucking amazing.

I've had that recently, someone being condescending in a meeting. How would you suggest wording a question to them in a private meeting?

Cherryandpineapple · 11/01/2025 19:08

Gosh, I love these threads. So many good ideas…. Although mainly rice.

Lurleene · 11/01/2025 19:20

My DS recently got me into this daily quiz. You are given clues and have to guess which Wikipedia article they are referring to. 10 questions per day, and they can be tricky. I got 6 today, I've scored as low as 2. I like it though because when you are wrong you get to learn all about the correct answer.

A heated airer. Amazing! How did I manage without one?

Also, kind of linked to the pan drawer thing, I use the carousel in my kitchen not for cleaning products (they go under the sink), but for tinned food, jars of pasta sauce etc. It's much easier trying to find a tin of tomatoes or a new bottle of brown sauce if you can just whizz everything around until you find it.

The room of straw doesn't have to be gold by morning if I m too tired to do it.

Oodies. Mine has transformed the depths of winter at home from chilly and miserable despite heating and layers and blankets into feeling warm and toasty within minutes. Utter game changer. Wish it’d been invented decades ago. Absolutely get one if you’re always cold.

I saw a full length one the other day 😍

Thanks.

I spoke to my GP back in late July/early August, who sent me a couple of questionnaires to fill in.

I then received a call in September to say my info had been referred to a company called Clinical Partners and they phoned to say I was on their waiting list.

Beginning of December I was offered an appointment on NYE via zoom with a psychiatrist. Was asked to have someone who'd known me a long time (ideally parent, sibling or childhood friend) with me for the last half hour. Had to fill in some more questionaires as did my nominated person.

I was given my diagnosis after 90 minutes and report is on its way to my GP.

Hi. My microwave is a Neff Combination and the setting is MicroCombi Intensive.

Have had the microwave for about 10 years and only just found it!

going away for Christmas/New Year. Am retired and no kids so went to the South of Spain last year and this year (just back) for half of December and January. I will never spend that cold, over commercialised load of bollocks that Christmas and the depths of Winter are again, as long as I'm able to. So help me God 😊

Edited

We do this, not retired but have adult kids. We are very fortunate to have a secind home in the Costa Blanca, thing is family have followed us out here to spend Xmas with us now 😓

beetr00 · 11/01/2025 20:07

Ah well, I think it's great that they actually want to be in your company, take it as a compliment!

Did you find Christmas very low key in Spain? I did and loved that immensely I have to say! Their January 6 Three Kings Day is the one they go mad for, especially the kids, and it's lovely to watch the parades.

Walkley18 · 11/01/2025 20:24

Adding to the cold/heated game changers...a heat pad. Plugs in, has different heat and timer settings and auto turn off. Originally bought for back pain but now use to warm bed or behind me on office chair as instant radiator if working from home. When it's not freezing and I don't want heat on for whole house, it's a perfect personal heat giver.

ChristmasKelpie · 11/01/2025 20:41

Katrinawaves thank you, will use this tomorrow morning.

I absolutely love how low key the 25th is, after 32 years of "hosting" that day, I'm so done !! Family went home on the 4th so we were able to celebrate Three Kings in our local village. The parades with the kids with their bags to collect all the sweets was just a joy to watch. We also got into the fiesta spirit with a few, well more than a few, and walk back home in the wee small hours.

Thanks @Vroomfondleswaistcoat and others, I've found the NHS pilates channel, so will give those a go.

Pilates. I started doing an online class about six weeks ago and my niggly lower back/hip pain has all but gone. I have no idea why I put it off for so long! I think because I work a late shift so can't do classes in real life I just prevaricated, until I saw the NHS ones on YouTube and thought 'I'll have a go at that'. Brilliant. I no longer wake in the night with a nagging sciatic pain.

I need to try this! Is the class an nhs one? I’ll have a google

As another PP has said, please could you give your recommendations for the heated throws? I'm another that has had a couple and had to return as they just stop working after 1 or 2 weeks.
Thanks!
