Help! Hairy lady chin out of control

Taytoface · 06/01/2025 13:19

I have peri mein chin hair growth. Was managing with regular plucking, but now it's out of fricking control. Waxing does nothing to my mofo whiskers.
Was thinking of getting a home later thing, but my hair is fairly light, apart from the odd jet black 2mm thick chin hairs.

What do you ladies use? Any reviews of the home laser kits for people with light red hair?

I am not very high maintenance, so would prefer something done infrequently but lasting.

i cannot stand the feel of my chin and am constantly worrying at it, which makes my skin come up in blotches. Really feeling very beautiful right now.

Find somewhere that does electrolysis - slower than laser-y things but permanent

I was also going to suggest electrolysis. I went regularly for a while before I fell pregnant and noticed a big difference. They can treat white/pale hair too. I’ve also got a face spa/epilator which is great. Bought the cheap battery one and upgraded to the rechargeable one as really liked it.

As far as I know, the only thing that lasts is electrolysis. It works wonderfully.

You can buy a lumea on a monthly basis so you can try it and send it back if it doesn't work.
I've had mine for a few months and it's definitely made a difference.

Neither Laser nor IPL will work on light red hair I'm afraid :( Electrolysis would though?

Bluesteps · 09/01/2025 06:25

This person is not a true friend, they repeatedly put you down. Sounds like you have got yourself to a better place. I think they are jealous and you will never change them. Concentrate on your baby. I would cut the friend off.

Taytoface · 09/01/2025 07:16

And will that get rid of my chin hair?

Home IPL has worked gradually for me over a couple of years for similar fairish chin hair - coarse ones and the occasional darkerq. Ongoing use though still. But over time coarse ones have disappeared or become finer, and now use it every 2-3 weeks for a couple of minutes, then pluck out the hairs. Stops me playing with my chin all the time, totally killed that bad habit!

Electrolysis is fine when done well but that is not always, and good operators can be expensive / involve travel. After one very bad session with a new salon I decided to try IPL, which has worked out fine for me anyway.

Bought a Silk'n Infinity which said it worked with lighter hairs. At the time that was mid-range pricewise, cost just £170 so was worth a shot. If I ever have to replace would be happy to pay more now for another IPL device, as this method suits me.

Based on my experiences perhaps trying out electrolysis first with a shorter session eg half hour would be a good idea before committing to a longer course. Also maybe check out the type (for me it had to be 'blend' not 'flash') and the operator's training (e.g. https://www.electrolysis.co.uk/members).

Good luck on finding your solution, I tried on and off for 30 years but there are many more options now, just a question of finding what suits yourself best.

Is electrolysis the general recommendation for all skin types? Black woman here with low pain threshold!

Interested in any London / Essex recommendations also.

I naively believed laser was the new improved electrolysis and was about to book a course.

Taytoface · 10/01/2025 09:50

I am afraid I don't know what works best on dark skin. I am not sure how the laser works. Is it effective on dark hair because the hair is dark, or does there need to be a contrast between lighter skin and darker hair (or vice versa).

I’m pretty sure it’s all skin types as it’s targeting the follicle with a tiny needle.

Yes, you are right, waxing It does weaken the hair in some areas eg: legs, underarms and eyebrows, but facial hairs are produced by different hormones and react differently.
Waxing, plucking or shaving will stimulate the hairs and encourage stronger growth of all hairs in that area.
Electrolysis treats and progressively weakens each hair individually

Oh. Is that true? So plucking the moustache will make it grow back thicker

I had some waxing today at salon and feel much happier. Surely it is better than shaving or dermaplaning

I don't think electrolysis is tenable for everyone.

OrchardDoor · 11/01/2025 23:41

The dermatologist in this article says plucking and shaving doesn't make it grow back thicker.

Csb1611 · 12/01/2025 05:23

I agree, you must choose the method you are most comfortably with and need to factor in time & costs.
feel I need to say that I don’t agree with the dermatologist in the NY Times article, but that’s just my opinion.
Good luck! X

@Taytoface electrolysis has been brilliant for me but I did go to one person who was terrible before I found a brilliant one.

The one I go to advised that one indicator of a good technician is that after the hair has been zapped, when they pull the hair out with tweezers there should be no feeling of resistance or pulling it it: if there is then they haven't zapped it for long enough or used a high enough current (ETA in which case the hair won't have been killed so the treatment won't be effective long term)

I started with mine a year ago at 3 week intervals, now I'm up to about 8 weeks and there are hardly any there that are visible without a magnifier.

WorriedRelative · 12/01/2025 09:27

Can anyone recognise a good electrolysis place in the East Midlands?

suburburban · 01/03/2025 07:48

To update I've started to have electrolysis

It is expensive but my lip and chin seem so much better and the regrowth is softer

RememberDecember · 18/03/2025 19:54

I have just bought a Lumea, mainly for face, hoping it works! It isn’t actually painful which is good but makes me sceptical on how effective it will be.

ParsnipPuree · 18/03/2025 22:48

I love plucking in the morning after seeing what’s sprouted.. find it relaxing.

876543A · 19/03/2025 19:26

I've been having laser treatment since November (have an appt about every 4 - 6 weeks) for PCOS related neck hair and it's been really effective. Most of it has not grown back and there's just a little stubborn patch that seems to be needing a bit more work, but I've been really impressed with it. I go to LaserHQ.

Christinglechristmas · 19/03/2025 19:46

Electrolysis sounds promising how pricey is it and can people tell you've had it done

Christinglechristmas · 19/03/2025 19:47

@suburburban when did you start and how much is it
