Help! Hairy lady chin out of control

Taytoface · 06/01/2025 13:19

I have peri mein chin hair growth. Was managing with regular plucking, but now it's out of fricking control. Waxing does nothing to my mofo whiskers.
Was thinking of getting a home later thing, but my hair is fairly light, apart from the odd jet black 2mm thick chin hairs.

What do you ladies use? Any reviews of the home laser kits for people with light red hair?

I am not very high maintenance, so would prefer something done infrequently but lasting.

i cannot stand the feel of my chin and am constantly worrying at it, which makes my skin come up in blotches. Really feeling very beautiful right now.

I think I may ask the GP for the cream. How difficult is it to get it prescribed?

So it really does work then? How often have you used it to get rid of armpit hair? Can you use it anywhere, like legs/ bikini area?

As expensive as it is, the Lumea is pretty amazing. Took about 6m to see a decent improvement. Mine has attachments for bikini, face and general( wider for legs etc.). I have patchy leg hair, I don't have the patience to ILP this often but face and bikini line is straggler free and armpit has around 5 hairs that are barely noticeable.

Electrolysis didn't work for me, persevered for a couple of years before I gave up - laser was a complete game changer, it was called Soprano Ice and I had it done on my jawline, chin and upper lip, now just need top ups every couple of years - not cheap but works!

peri mein chin
Sorry, @Taytoface but that made me laugh - sounds like a Chinese take-away meal

BBBusterkeys · 08/01/2025 10:08

I get threading done but it hurts like a MOFO. Especially when they get the big wirey ones. Because it hurts so much I don’t get it done regularly, which apparently is a vicious cycle as then the hair is longer so it hurts more.

Coraliotemple · 08/01/2025 11:45

I wonder if anyone on this thread has seen a difference in chin hair with more medical interventions or holistic approaches, for example weight loss or advice from a gp like medication for hormones or something.
Everyone talks about hair removal but it’s v expensive and not really a long term solution as I see it?
I’m sceptical about laser, I’ve had but like everyone I know who has had it, the hair comes back even worse and I feel I’ll be tied in for life.

Paisleyandpolkadots · 08/01/2025 14:09

Well I had a home IPL unit and treated my legs, forearms and armpit hair. That was years and years ago and they have stayed gone. They absolutely have not come back even worse. I had very dark hair and very light skin so I was an ideal candidate. Honestly, the hours I have saved on waxing, epilating, shaving and the never to be forgotten emery mitt. (I had wondered how it would sandpaper off the hairs before it sandpapered my skin off and I can tell you I was right to worry - I think it might work better for lightly furred Anglo Saxon types.)

I am not keen on waving any IPL thing anywhere near my eyes. So I have an electrolysis appointment every so often if I notice a dark hair on my chin or jaw. By never letting them get out of hand it doesn't cost very much for a short session and I always get the beautician to cheek for any rogue ones lurking. I am going to keep this up because after a certain age you just get more of the little blighters. It really is dependent on the skill of the operator and if you can feel the hair being pulled out, its not gone. The lady I used for years retired and I am not sure how good the new person is.

Professional electrolysis. I've been having it for a few years now. At first I needed 2/3 30 minute sessions to clear the hair - but it was great because all that chin rubbing and trying to dig them out with tweezers was over!

I go back every so often for a 15 or 30 minute session to get out any new ones.

You don't need to grow the hair long, at all - I find any I could get with tweezers come out, plus the treatment is at the root so the hair doesn't need to have even broken through the skin. The electrolysist does need to be able to see the hair is there though.

CrimsonStar · 08/01/2025 15:27

Electrolysis. It will remove hair forever, takes 5-6 (but might be around 10 depending on your hair growth) sessions to remove 90% or hair. It’s the only method that gives permanent results.

If you don’t want electrolysis sugaring or waxing is my personal favorite. It’s quick and effective and safe. And easy to do at home yourself for your area (face).

IPL will not work with light hair. Best results are with dark hair + fair skin. And at home devices are weak, I use one to keep progress I got from laser at the salon.

Taytoface · 08/01/2025 15:29

Have found an electrolysis place. I will report back progress. Shall I take before and after pictures in the beautiful light in my car?

Good idea!🙂

Love this thread (reminds me of one years ago on here where someone said she had a pact with a friend that if either of them ended up in a coma the other would rush to their side with tweezers). I thought it was a brilliant idea and now have a similar pact with a mate.

I've tried all sorts over the years. 47 now and just use tweezers but it's getting quite unmanageable. I'm sure I tried electrolysis at some point back in the day and found it gave me temporary scarring /pitting but I don't think laser / lumea would work because my hairs are red and white as well as black, brown, so loads of them wouldn't get picked up.

Might give electrolysis another shot but has anyone on here who has tried it ended up with scarring / enlarged pores where the needle goes in?

Electrolysis sounds good. Does anyone know if there are any redness/soreness after treatment ? Or can it be done in lunchtime and back to work after?

I think if I lose weight/stop drinking/eat loads of veggies they grow back more slowly, but once they're there, they're there 😭

Electrolysis all the way, it just completely destroys them. It's slow, I've been going for a year, but they grow back lighter and thinner each time. Its a miracle, I have so much more time now I can leave the house without wasting time checking myself in the mirror for horrible witchy hairs.

Not sure if this is allowed but I go to JH Skincare in London and it's great!

It looks a bit red/blotchy straight after but calms down pretty quickly for me (normal skin). I usually get it done after school drop off and it's completely calmed down by pickup 👍

Jewel1968 · 08/01/2025 16:32

@rewilded my GP was fine about prescribing it. He also suggested it was better than IPL or electrolysis. Worth a try.

NotByTheHairOnMy · 08/01/2025 17:06

I tend to pop out at lunchtime and straight back into the office. It can look slightly red but goes down quickly. My therapist uses aleo vera to wipe the area with after and that takes my makeup off. You're not meant to go swimming after it either.

It's kind of weird if you get a hair with a particularly thick root as you can feel it getting pulled out the pore!

I don't fit it particularly sore apart from the hairs right under my nose, they make my eyes stream, but then they're uncomfortable to pluck too.

I'm glad I started it when I did, which was pre-pandemic - I still get new hairs (a few on my neck recently) and I'd look like Chewbacca by now if I hadn't already got rid of the ones that started appearing when I was 25 or so.

I've lost 4.5 stones since I started with it and kept that weight off for a year (better diet, far more exercise), and still get enough new hairs that I go for a short session every 6-9 months or so.

Does anyone have home electrolysis tweezers? I'm sure there was a company (Boots?) did them years ago.

I only have a few hairs so would try that as an option ...

SeeSawSeen · 08/01/2025 17:42

My electrolysist says not to put any cream (except antiseptic cream - whatever Germolene is called now!) or make-up on the area for 24hrs. So I do it Fridays when I know I have nothing on requiring make-up on the Saturday. It's a bit red after, but goes down after an hour or two.
So excited to see some of you are considering trying it - it's a genuine life-changer.
Not sure any home electrolysis system like electrified tweezers would be strong enough, as they don't get down to the root of the hair, and the current would be very weak by the time it gets down there... I haven't tried them so can't say for sure, but I suspect that it needs to be a proper professional-grade machine operated by someone who can get it right down into the follicle to get more zap for your buck😁

I’m a Beauty Therapist with 40 years experience. I’m pleased to see so many recommendations for electrolysis as it’s the only method of hair ' removal that is legally allowed to advertise “permanent hair removal”
The longer you pluck, wax or shave the more sessions of electrolysis you will need.
Admittedly it isn’t the most comfortable treatment and takes a long while, but it does work!

I thought waxing would weaken the hair over time

It has done on my legs

Paisleyandpolkadots · 08/01/2025 21:21

I tried home electrolysis tweezers years ago and I might as well have thrown bat dropping over my shoulder in terms of getting rid of hairs.

To the person who wanted to know about scarring. I have never had any facial scarring. Depending on how many hairs you have you might end up a bit red. Having just a few done at a time, I have felt fine to go shopping afterwards and looked okay. I guess you could always wear a face mask.

Thirty years ago, I did have some stray hairs on my nipples done and they did scab though I think that was operator error. They eventually healed without any scarring and the hair was definitely gone for good as they've never returned.

WasteOfPaint · 08/01/2025 21:31

I've had redness for a few days from electrolysis, but not bad enough to stop me from doing anything.

I will say it's very important to find a skilled electrolysis practitioner. I initially went to someone who unfortunately had no idea what she was doing. As mentioned above, once a hair is properly treated it should slide out with no resistance. This rarely happened, I think because she didn't treat each hair for long enough, and she was just plucking them out. Only saving grace was that she was very cheap, so I didn't waste so much money but I wasted a lot of time. I'm now going to a different place and the difference in how she does it is huge.
