Help! Hairy lady chin out of control

Taytoface · 06/01/2025 13:19

I have peri mein chin hair growth. Was managing with regular plucking, but now it's out of fricking control. Waxing does nothing to my mofo whiskers.
Was thinking of getting a home later thing, but my hair is fairly light, apart from the odd jet black 2mm thick chin hairs.

What do you ladies use? Any reviews of the home laser kits for people with light red hair?

I am not very high maintenance, so would prefer something done infrequently but lasting.

i cannot stand the feel of my chin and am constantly worrying at it, which makes my skin come up in blotches. Really feeling very beautiful right now.

I had the same as you, I am mainl6 light red or blonde hair but some stronger black. Laser does absolutely nothing for pale hair, in fact I think it can make it worse. electrolysis is the way to go, get a home device you. A buy them on eBay, I did my own and I am just about hair free. It takes a while though.

I have a similar one but it's something that you'd likely have to use on a daily basis. so not like waxing, threading etc. I use it for 'emergencies'
I've got an epilator that I use regularly to keep chin hair under control.

My worst fear is being in a nursing home at a bout 90 with a full beard because no one cares enough to get rid of the hair for me!

My late DM was in a nursing home due to dementia and she had some long curling hairs on her chin and upper lip -- there was no way she would let me anywhere near her (getting her hair cut was a nightmare) but I mentioned it to her favourite care assistant who said she would be able to sort it very quickly with a bic-type razor, which she did.
So ask a DD or GDD to mention it to the carers in the home!

Something worth trying are crystal hair removers like this one https://www.sephora.co.uk/p/sephora-collection-hair-eraser?curr=GBPcurr=GBP&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADm1HxF_vlQ9tE7hyD_TabeP67uvP&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIm-DVxo_iigMV9JdQBh3rmAAaEAQYASABEgIuC_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

You can get them on Amazon or pick them up in TKMaxx for a few pounds. In my experience they aren’t as harsh as shaving (although I do recommend a good moisturiser afterwards) and help to take the worst off. Might be worth trying before spending £££.

I agree that perimenopause is a bastard.

@Sunshineandrainbow yes I shave and wash my face first and then zap the hair. Have used it only on my face so far and have gotten excellent results. After doing it religiously every two weeks for a couple of months, I barely have any growth left. Now, I just do it when I notice a hair or two, maybe once in a month.

Newusernameforthiss · 06/01/2025 22:24

Electrolysis!! Been doing it for a year and it's brilliant. Works on light hair too. Where in the country are you?

Poihg · 06/01/2025 22:26

Home laser and vaniqa combo have kept my face hairs from pcos much more manageable

Itisjustmyopinion · 06/01/2025 22:27

I have tweezers in every room I think because as soon as I feel one I have to get it out.

Agree that the car is best. I have had a few “why do you have tweezers in the car” comments but is definitely the best place to catch them, especially the neck ones

Ihopeithinkiknow · 06/01/2025 22:36

How have we got here lol I'm sure it was only 5 minutes ago I was down the park with my mates swigging cider and suddenly I'm 44 and interested in a thread about plucking chin hairs haha I do quite enjoy plucking them though

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/01/2025 22:41

@Taytoface be like me!! get alopecia! problem solved, even legs (I am sure I used to stand in a grow bag overnight and leg hair grew at the rate of knots!!)

Showdogworkingdog · 06/01/2025 22:47

Same here. I tried laser treatment on the wiry little fuckers at a salon but it hurt like buggery, was costing me a fortune and it only works properly on dark hair. Lucky me, I have a whole rainbow of chin hair colours ranging from white, through ginge, blonde, mahogany and black. Yay. And between appointments I was having to shave. Fucking shave.

Turns out plucking is the worst thing you can do, it turns them into rampant wiry whiskers. It’s been my hobby for years to lie in bed with my kindle in one hand and tweezers in the other, plucking away so I’d created a big old problem for myself once I hit peri menopause. Beautician told me to stop plucking, to shave them no more than twice a week and if I absolutely must remove any more frequently than that, to cut them. With scissors. Imagine that.

Anyway, I’d had enough of laser and the shaving so I ditched it for electrolysis at the salon which I’m having every three weeks. Electrolysis takes longer to work than laser but it works on all colours of hair, it’s not very painful and it’s cheaper than laser - I’m paying £30 every three weeks. It’ll take a few goes but eventually it’ll only need to be done a couple of times a year and the wiry little fuckers should be gone. I’ve had four electrolysis sessions now and the hairs are already staying away for longer and feel softer as they grow back and I’m not needing to shave even weekly now. Worth a go I think.

But shit isn’t it?

Fraaances · 06/01/2025 22:51

Have you seen a GP about this? Combined with other symptoms, can be a symptom of underlying hormonal imbalance or, PCOS, and other related medical conditions ie insulin resistance, etc, type 2 diabetes. There are medications which can help also. (Ie Spironolactone)

Do they just get rid of peach fuzz or do they get rid of the thick black ones too?

soupmaker · 06/01/2025 22:59

Nearly all my leg hair now sprouts on my jawline, cheeks and chin. Mid-50s, and also accessorise every bag and the car with tweezers. I use a dermaplaner when it gets out of hand. Fucking hormones.

Ihavenoclueaboutwhattodo · 06/01/2025 23:08

Any recommendations for good tweezers?

I have a very basic tweezer from Superdrug that works every time but they have changed the design so I dread what will happen if it ever gets lost!

ThatLimeCat · 06/01/2025 23:13

Honestly, I use a safety razor and shaving cream and just shave daily in the shower, man style. It's the only thing that has 'fixed' my pcos hair. You could look into laser as well, but as it's hormonal hair you might be getting it done yearly

CatMum27 · 06/01/2025 23:25

devilspawn · 06/01/2025 22:54

It gets rid of the worst of the thick ones if you persevere. My only caution would be to do it in short bursts at first - it’s a bit like using sandpaper on your face if you’re not careful. The advantage over shaving is that it avoids that horrid rash/ingrown hair look.

I was sceptical at first but picked one up in TKMaxx for about £5 and it’s pretty effective at keeping the worst away and lasts longer than a razor.

Find somewhere that does electrolysis - slower than laser-y things but permanent

My mum swears by electrolysis, so was going to say this too.

I never used to have facial hair in need of maintaining, but have developed it now I'm 36. Have just started waxing this week - at least it seems to be keeping it at bay for now 🙃 Hope to be able to afford electrolysis in a few years, before the thicket comes.

WhatsitWiggle · 06/01/2025 23:33

Lumea was fab on my dark chin hairs - those thick buggers you can feel long before you can grab enough to tweezer out. I followed the initial process and 5 years later I only give a maintenance zap every few months!

Doesn't work at all on a couple of them that turned white before being obliterated unfortunately.

I did NOT shave! I waxed previously, so just left a few days after that, then started. The hair grew initially but fell out, and then it's a case of staying on top of the regrowth pattern until it admits defeat.

I've also used it on my underarms and lower legs but was less religious about upper legs and bikini so those results are poor. Have saved a fortune in waxing though.

Hi OP,
I feel your pain, it's so miserable! If you can afford it, I recommend electrolysis with a skilled therapist. The lower part of my face was covered in thick black hairs as well as lots of ingrown ones and my skin was destroyed from plucking. My self-esteem was on the floor.
I googled electrolysis in my area and read reviews and somehow found my therapist who is surely an angel in human form. I started weekly electrolysis 16 months ago, and now just need 10mins every 8/10 wks to catch the stragglers!
It's not at all painfree, cheap or fast (not doing the best job of selling it here, am I, lol), but it is genuinely the best thing I've ever done. The hair is just...gone! It's honestly a miracle. Well, science, but it feels like a miracle to me.

You may be onto something here. So do we cut all hair or shave it? No plucking might be the way forward as they do seem to be turning into whiskers now - ffs!

WellsAndThistles · 07/01/2025 00:13

I pluck then have a quick wizz over with an epliator as the CF's turn grey eventually and they're impossible to see 😱.

So pleased for you! Do you have to let them grow out in between sessions? And may I ask where you are based roughly pls? I need this angel in my life too 😭
