Help! Hairy lady chin out of control

Taytoface · 06/01/2025 13:19

I have peri mein chin hair growth. Was managing with regular plucking, but now it's out of fricking control. Waxing does nothing to my mofo whiskers.
Was thinking of getting a home later thing, but my hair is fairly light, apart from the odd jet black 2mm thick chin hairs.

What do you ladies use? Any reviews of the home laser kits for people with light red hair?

I am not very high maintenance, so would prefer something done infrequently but lasting.

i cannot stand the feel of my chin and am constantly worrying at it, which makes my skin come up in blotches. Really feeling very beautiful right now.

I second electrolysis, (I’ve got PCOS and have had hair issues on my face for years) electrolysis works but it takes perseverance to get those hairs gone forever, so in the short terms you’ll need some waxing too. there’s a limit to how many hairs they can zap per session without damaging your facial skin.

I have fair hair. Electrolysis has worked well for.me BUT it's been a weekly 15 mins appt for 16 months, targeting upper lip and chin intermittently. It isn't the nicest thing in the world but it's effective. If you decide on it, just make sure you go to a reputable place!

How do you find somewhere though?

I’d really love to find somewhere I could go to to for electrolysis … and in fact all of the other beautician/salon type stuff that I have never bothered with before but now need in my 50s. But I don’t have the first clue how to find somewhere.

In fact, probably the reason I have never bothered is that in my 20s/30s I went a couple of times for facials and just didn’t see any benefit. It felt like I was just throwing money away. How can I find somewhere good, that can recommend to me what I actually need, because I don’t even know what the options are to be able to ask?

Another vote for epilators here. I have light hairs that don’t really respond to lasting. I epilate my chin every few days and neck, upper lip and peach fuzz about once a month. Yes, it’s bloody painful (especially moustache), but it’s also mercifully quick.

*lasering, not lasting

CatTV · 07/01/2025 20:52

I've been having electrolysis for years now, ever since I had an awful experience with a beautician who waxed my chin without my consent (long story) and then I got into a horrible cycle of having to go back to see her every two days because I'm so dark.

Anyway, the little bastards got under control through regular electrolysis and I was only having to go back every 6 months or so for a quick top up. It's painful but quick and it's cheaper than laser.

I'm finding a few more are popping up now, but I think it's because I was tweezing during the pandemic

What epilator do you use. A special facial one.

I have a body one

I sometimes use a springy thing on my face which is similar to threading I think

LadyRoughDiamond · 07/01/2025 21:41

Just a standard body one - Braun, I think. You can get ones with smaller heads for like face but I have so much hair, I don’t really think about precision 😂

I’m a Beauty Therapist with 40 years experience. I’m pleased to see so many recommendations for electrolysis as it’s the only method of hair ' removal that is legally allowed to advertise “permanent hair removal”
The longer you pluck, wax or shave the more sessions of electrolysis you will need.
Admittedly it isn’t the most comfortable treatment and takes a long while, but it does work!

Stealthmodemama · 07/01/2025 23:12

How do you find a good electrolysis - my local salon said with my level of hair I should go for laser removal. I think there is a possibility that lasered hair will grow back (or get worse.. I have PCOS so likely it could).

SassK · 07/01/2025 23:27

I alternate between derma plane, removal cream and a small electric shaver.
It amazes me how most women will suffer hairy faces, and futile plucking that removes next to none of it, rather than just whip it off.
It's a myth that shaved hair grows back thicker. It will grow back more blunt feeling, but NOT thicker. I notice downy/fuzzy hair on other women all the time, and it looks awful. Why suffer it when you can plane/cream/shave???

That's fine if that's all you have, but some of us have thicker hair. Mine are dark and black, so you can see them coming through before they're long enough to pluck, and dermaplane and shavers and razors still leave stubble or only work for a few hours before it's back.

I was told it wasn't suitable for my skin tone, but that was a long time ago.

Admittedly I don't have many thick hairs, but I do have a few on my chin, and a good quality electric razor will leave no stubble! I have to really press to feel for the thick ones next day.

Any recommendations for good tweezers?

I have a very basic tweezer from Superdrug that works every time but they have changed the design so I dread what will happen if it ever gets lost!

Tweezerman full size slanted tips are excellent… (approx £23) used others but not a patch on tweezerman … expensive but once you have a pair they last years… they used to offer a free warranty for 2 years too…i have about 4 pairs cuz keep losing them 🤣 but then they turn up

Some are better than others, I have a silver pair that are terrible for chin hair, the tips are thick, but the rose gold ones are slimmer and better.

I can't feel them but they are dark hair so the "dot" of each can be seen still.

lemonchops111 · 08/01/2025 00:24

@devilspawn
i agree with you that the silver (basic) ones have thicker tip (i do have 1 pair of those)… i also don’t like the mini ones but the full size slanted coloured varieties are wonderful… also agree that the mirror makes a huge difference, i use an illuminated 10 x magnifying mirror (really scary what it shows up) but you just have to remember nobody can see you that close up unless they are holding a magnifying glass 🤣

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/01/2025 00:55

@Christinglechristmas

neck ?!!! noooooo

a few on my chin are bad enough, now I need to look at my neck !!!

RobertaFirmino · 08/01/2025 01:20

Just a cheapo dermaplaner. Full face every 4-5 days to keep peach fuzz at bay, chin hairs as needed. Takes 5 seconds, if that. I buy multipacks and keep them in various places.

I once dermaplaned my legs on holiday (forgot razor) and the amount of dead skin that came off was phenomenal.

notprincehamlet · 06/01/2025 18:26

Find somewhere that does electrolysis - slower than laser-y things but permanent

I would if I could, definitely! Would NOT be a 'one and done' thing, though, as each year brings more of the sprouty bastards.

I use an epilator. Yes, it hurts. You kind of get used to it.

I also put Ovestin cream on my lower face. It hasn't stopped the hairs, sadly, but does retard them somewhat. Miss a couple of days and they seem to reappear at double speed!

Csb1611 · 08/01/2025 05:38

Ask friends for recommendations or enquire with a professional organisation such as BABTAC or BIAE and ask for local qualified practitioners..

good luck!

christmaslatte · 08/01/2025 07:07

I have fair hair, and too much to pluck. I simply shave. I used to faff about with creams but now I simply shave it all off.

I don't understand how waxing etc work as surely you need to let it regrow sufficiently for the wax to get a grip on it? I don't want to do that!

I shelled out for the Lumea a few years ago. All scary black face hairs are gone and most armpit hair, bar a few stragglers. I'm rubbish at layering often but I will do it every now and again. It has totally changed my life though, I had some awful black thick chin and cheek hair.

So it really does work then? How often have you used it to get rid of armpit hair? Can you use it anywhere, like legs/ bikini area?

I have a lumea (which has probably died from never being charged) but when I used it on my legs it gave me two permanent red bumps or spots on my calves. It's almost like two hairs became ingrowing hairs that grew a little skin cover. Is there any way of avoiding this? Reading this thread I wondered about using it on my top lip moustache which is getting darker but I don't want to end up with 'spots'.
