We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

She’s a weirdo. I would have let her known and then left her to enjoy her jacket potato.

IfUCantDance · 06/01/2025 12:11

@Unlovablerogue You haven’t understood properly. OP said potato was the only option she liked while in the queue. Her friend said she’d have a pie. At front of queue, friend changed her mind and OP tried to order 2 potatoes for them both. At this point they were told only one potato left. Friend nabbed the last potato knowing OP didn’t like any of the other options.

mirandabaileyy · 06/01/2025 12:06

@TownDrain I said I will get the jacket potato as I don't like anything else in the queue before I knew there was only 1 left

Ah, ok, that changes things op so ignore my previous post.

So you both thought there was more than 1 potato, and it’s only when you got to the front of the queue that you realised there weren’t. I guess in that moment she made a snap decision that she wanted the potato, without realising or remembering that you said that you didn’t like anything else. I’m sure it was just a miscommunication, unless she’s childishly selfish (but, if that was the case, there would have been previous occasions of her being selfish). I wouldn’t end the friendship for just one incident of selfishness, people are flawed, as are we

Shetlands · 06/01/2025 12:16

So what happened? Did you sit with no lunch while she ate the jacket potato?

wombat15 · 06/01/2025 12:16

I would assume that she forgot that you only liked the jacket potato when she asked for it. When she asked for it I would have said that I would be going to another cafe then as nothing left.

Gabitule · 06/01/2025 12:16

Unlovablerogue · 06/01/2025 12:09

But you were planning to do the same to her so why is she the twat?

I guess that’s because the friend had already expressed an interest in the pie, suggesting that she was able to eat something else, whereas op only wanted the potato 🤷‍♀️

HMW1906 · 06/01/2025 12:16

I would’ve probably have just told her i didn’t like a thing else and I’m hungry so I’ll have to go elsewhere and I’d catch up with her another time. It’s up to her then if she wanted to let you have the jacket or eat alone. I certainly wouldn’t have just had a cup of tea for lunch.

BumblePan · 06/01/2025 12:17

Nobody is so clueless, that they can't understand your request for the item you wanted.

mumsets has thought me, if somebody shows you who they are, believe them!

You now know who they are, they are not your friend unfortunately.

MikeRafone · 06/01/2025 12:17

why were you with this person? Id have left, said to her Im going somewhere else as I don't like any of the other options

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/01/2025 12:18

Very annoying of her. I hope I would have said that if she wanted the sole remaining spud we would have to go elsewhere for lunch, but I probably would have sipped a resentful mug of tea as well!

pimplebum · 06/01/2025 12:02

It always makes me sad on Mumsnet how v quick some to assume this is a bad friend “ twat” etc etc
despite the fact you said it twice clearly … people don’t listen ! I know I don’t always listen and can be awkward and stress when I first greet someone and I suspect I’d a bit deaf these days especially is a clattery environment like a cafe

unless she has form for being horribly selfish I’d put it down to mid Communication
and not over think it

So true! Jeez I would fail any MN friend test just by being a bit flustered... suddenly I'd be BLOCKED and a TWAT and NOT A FRIEND.

RockPaperS · 06/01/2025 12:20

The way you describe it, you are obviously right… however I wonder if her version of the events was that you tried to claim the one remaining potato even though it is what she wanted as well.

pumpkinpillow · 06/01/2025 12:20

Your 'friend' smirked at you in response to you voicing that she had taken the only thing on the menu you liked.

That's no friend OP.

FirstOfTheFirst · 06/01/2025 12:21

Same old conclusion:

  1. She is always a twat and so this is just another example of twattery in a long list of them. In which case, I'd not really consider her a friend.
  2. She is normallly a perfectly reasonable, considerate person and this was a brain fart moment that is out of character for her. In which case, I'd let it go.
LouisvilleSlugger · 06/01/2025 12:22

I would have let you have the potato.

But I also wouldn’t sweat the small stuff.

pimplebum · 06/01/2025 12:22

But did she really smirk…? You would have to be some sort of pantomime villain to smirk with glee that your friend has nothing and you got the spud

come on ! Smirk ! Really ?

SunshineAndFizz · 06/01/2025 12:23

mirandabaileyy · 06/01/2025 11:45

@saveforthat why would I say that? I had said twice I didn't like anything else
It was clear as day
I had said I won't get anything as I don't like anything else

Yeah she's not being a good friend at all.

But yes you should have put your foot down and stood up for yourself but saying it again.

Don't take shit like this lying down.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/01/2025 12:25

ChaToilLeam · 06/01/2025 11:51

She‘s selfish, spiteful and not a friend. Don’t have anything more to do with her.

It’s pretty simple. This.

devilspawn · 06/01/2025 12:25

cantthinkofausername26 · 06/01/2025 12:11

Can I HAVE, not get!! 😩😩😩

It's the same thing.

onwardsup4 · 06/01/2025 12:25

K0OLA1D · 06/01/2025 11:42

Well I would have. But some people are twats

Yep

Goatblu · 06/01/2025 12:26

I'd have waited for her to pay for her precious potato, cancelled the tea and gone elsewhere to find something I did want to eat.

onwardsup4 · 06/01/2025 12:26

saveforthat · 06/01/2025 11:44

What did she say when you said "Oh can I have the jacket because I don't like anything else and you said you would have the pie"?

Tedious sarcastic reply. How many times do you think OP should have said it ?

onwardsup4 · 06/01/2025 12:27

pimplebum · 06/01/2025 12:22

But did she really smirk…? You would have to be some sort of pantomime villain to smirk with glee that your friend has nothing and you got the spud

come on ! Smirk ! Really ?

😂 yea if she did actually smirk then game over for friendship

mrstinsle · 06/01/2025 12:28

How much of a friend/how much do you know her?

Is she an old school friend, mum friend or a work colleague? Maybe she's not your friend as much as you thought she was.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 06/01/2025 12:29

Nanny0gg · 06/01/2025 11:58

I'd have watched her pay for hers then I'd have gone home.

Same here. That was a nasty thing to do. A real friend would have picked something else or suggested going elsewhere.
