We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

She is not your friend. I’d have left once she sat with her potato. I would not give her the satisfaction of smirking and eating it in front of me, knowing what had been said before ordering. Nor would I ever see her again.
It might be only a potato but it’s indicative of her attitude to a friend and a nasty streak in her that could materialise again

Problemzapper · 08/01/2025 11:13

I would have suggested going somewhere else (if feasible) and if she refused then I would have said "oh, I'll go home then and make myself something, I'm starving, enjoy your baked potato" and left her to it.

Jumpingthruhoops · 08/01/2025 17:43

When they'd said what they had left, I'd have just suggested we go somewhere else. Seems odd for a cafe to have so little 'lunch' left at lunch time!

Mamagonemad · 09/01/2025 14:13

Rude of her. If I was her I would either have had something else or suggested we go elsewhere.

PissOffJeffrey · 09/01/2025 14:15

Surely if you go out to lunch with a friend & there isn’t anything available for BOTH of you to eat, you go elsewhere?

Either that or share the jacket potato or - my personal choice - the friend who likes something else on the menu chooses that something else!

Julimia · 09/01/2025 14:30

Can't believe you think that this is important enough to think about let alone even post it. Get something real to worry about

FoxesSox · 09/01/2025 14:33

What a nasty friend. I wouldn’t go out with her again. How spiteful and hurtful. Did you have to sit and watch her eat it? Horrible woman.

Coops227 · 09/01/2025 14:35

She either didn’t hear you or she is not your friend. Next time I wouldn’t bother going out with her.
if you do end up going out again I would raise up the subject
”can I ask, why did you take the last jacket knowing I wouldn’t eat anything else?”

Viviennemary · 09/01/2025 14:49

I wouldn't go with her again. She seemed to take a delight in this and was a bit nasty. I probably would have walked out too if I didn't want the alternatives.

BotterMon · 09/01/2025 14:51

Ex-"friend".

It’s “I would have” not “I would of”. It just sounds like ‘of’ because it’s short for ‘would’ve’ which sounds like would ‘of’.

Huckyfell · 09/01/2025 15:10

You are causing a right rumpus here down to 1 jacket potato. I would say get over it, course she's still your friend, it's a bloody spud.

Gnomegarden32 · 09/01/2025 15:15

A good friend wouldn't steal your jacket potato...

Christwosheds · 09/01/2025 15:18

K0OLA1D · 06/01/2025 11:42

Well I would have. But some people are twats

This.

loveawineloveacrisp · 09/01/2025 15:19

I mean, I love a jacket spud so I probably would have done the same 😂

Was there really nothing else on the whole entire menu that you liked?

mistyglissy · 09/01/2025 15:29

I'd never do that to my friend, in fact I'd be falling over myself to make sure she got what she wanted before me and she'd be the same to me.

Sobermum24 · 09/01/2025 15:32

She sounds mean and you sound pathetic

To be honest, i would have had butter, baked beans and cheese on it, not tuna

Perhaps she also didn’t like anything else except for the jacket potato, and she thought you were a bit selfish when you were the FIRST to announce that you’d have the jacket potato, leaving her no option but to choose from the rest.
Or, it’s possible that she didn’t pay attention to what you said.

Why didn’t you say ‘’I don’t like anything except for the potato, are you ok with a sandwich? If not, let’s go somewhere else or let’s both share the potato’’ or something along those lines.

Once she changed her mind and said she was also going to have the potato you could have reminded her that only 1 potato was available; instead, you got to the front of the queue and asked for 2 potatoes, knowing only 1 was available. Bizarre! Sorry but you’re both as poor at communicating as eachother

But to answer your question, if a friend announced that they wanted the potato I would have absolutely let them have it out of kindness .

Edited

Exactly this!

The friend is thoughtless and petty - and I’m questioning the OPs ability to make communicate simple ideas.

It us obvious that neither of you wanted the sandwich or the pie, but you had decided you were having it anyway without asking her what she wanted.

I will be going against the grain here but it would have been better for you to ask her which option she wanted rather than telling her what she was having.

CountryMouse22 · 09/01/2025 16:02

Selfish bitch!

But that isn't what happened.
Friend initially wanted the pie, so how was it obvious that she didn't want it? They didn't know there was only 1 potato until they got to the front of the queue, so OP didn't tell her friend what she could have at all.

Nurseynursey3 · 09/01/2025 16:50

I would have just said to your friend, that I’m not going to bother as there is nothing I like, hope you choke on enjoy your potato and I would have walked out and either went somewhere else or home.

Dinomum79 · 09/01/2025 21:50

I think people who do things like this are trying to make a point to you and have hidden ill will .
