We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

But she would have, had she got in first.

They both wanted the potato. OP would have happily eaten it while her friend wanted it. md don't start with the friend could have had the pie, she obviously decided she didn't want it....just as OP did.
So much fuss about nothing.

The OP didn't decide she didn't want the pie. She doesn't like the pie. It's not the same.

Even my younger DS, who will usually do everything he can to annoy his brother, would let him have the potato in this scenario. Because the potato is the only thing DS1 will eat from that list.

I wish my problems in life were this level.

If you want to stoop to that pedantry..OP decided she didn't want the pie because she didn't like the pie.
Which for all you know, is exactly why the friend decided she didn't want it either. It's exactly the same thing.

It's not 'for all you know'. What we know that the friend was going to have the pie, so to posit she didn't like it in the same way that the OP didn't is just weird. Not the same thing at all.

For all we know, friend said I'll have the pie, then remembered that they'd had the pie before and didnt like the pie. So they were only left with one option, same as OP.

And as I've repeatedly said, the real issue is that they went to such a shit place for lunch.

Good god

Is this really worth a thread ?

fairytailcat · 07/01/2025 18:06

I would have suggested going somewhere else

Sounds like a crap cafe

exaltedwombat · 07/01/2025 18:09

Mumsnet badly wants you to break uo a friendship over this. Does that make Mumsnet a very nice person? Do you really want to be friends with Mumsnet any more?

DiduAye · 07/01/2025 18:16

She's no friend

Ladymeade · 07/01/2025 18:40

What a shitty thing to do. CF...

So she didn’t say anything else while you sat there not eating? She just ate the potato while you had no lunch?

Why didn’t you tell her you’d have to leave to go and get something to eat from somewhere?

Tweeteroo · 07/01/2025 19:36

I did something similar to your friend once. At a works Xmas party a tray of greggs cakes were brought out and immediately one of my colleagues screamed out, " I'll have that chocolate one, that's mine! ". Obviously there was only one chocolate cake but as the tray was closest to me, I grabbed it and took a huge bite, much to colleagues absolute disgust. In my defence, this colleague had been an absolute cow to me the entire year and I did do it deliberately ( i don't even like chocolate cake!) It was a very small payback and felt ridiculously good! On the other hand OP, this person isn't your friend - no friend would ever treat you with such contempt. Most of us reserve that type of behaviour for our enemies.

pollymere · 07/01/2025 20:24

I'd have let you have the JP and had another option - even though I shouldn't be eating either of the other options for health reasons. Yes, my friend's preferences are more important to me than having my diet upset (diet for health not weight loss).

Dogsbreath7 · 07/01/2025 20:33

I can’t believe anyone eats out and has a baked potato frankly. Surely there must have been another cafe within 10 mins.

Wildwalksinjanuary · 07/01/2025 20:54

I imagine she ordered it without realising. Cafes are busy places, I very much doubt she choose to have the jacket potato to annoy you. Did you sit with nothing op?

Iloveyoubut · 07/01/2025 21:08

I feel like if someone came on right now and said “ffs, all of this carry on over a baked potato.” The whole of mumsnet would shout “it’s not about the f@cking potato!!!” in unison. 😂

Did you even read the OP?!

DisabledDemon · 07/01/2025 21:12

What a lovely person!

That was very poor of her, if not actually quite nasty. You'd said, quite plainly, that the only thing you wanted was the JP and then she took it and thought it was amusing.

Dump her - she's not worth it.

Wildwalksinjanuary · 07/01/2025 21:16

AyeYCan · 07/01/2025 21:10

Did you even read the OP?!

Yes apparently op said she didn’t like other things a few times, but maybe her friend didn’t hear her properly. Who eats egg pie anyway?! It all sounds rancid.

latetothefisting · 07/01/2025 21:21

DowntonBlabbie · 07/01/2025 12:30

But again, it would be fine for OP to do exactly that.....

but we've got no idea what OP would have done, because she was never given the opportunity...if friend hadn't bagsied the last one she might very well have offered to share it/go elsewhere etc.

WeCanOnlyDoOurBest · 07/01/2025 21:36

I would’ve left her sitting at the table eating the last jacket potato and walked out of the cafe door… friend? Be assured she’s not a friend

RecklessGoddess · 07/01/2025 22:31

I would have just walked out, gone to a different cafe and got a jacket potato there. Then blocked her on my phone, this so called "friend", and been well rid of her selfishness! !

nationalsausagefund · 08/01/2025 07:06

I’d have thrown the potato at her head, burned down the cafe, and sat in the cafe opposite staring out at the flames while cackling. Nothing less.
