We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

Feel like making jacket potato’s for supper tomorrow.

i sometimes wonder if potato industry and Dyson start these threads on purpose.

Plot twist…OP was the jacket potato the yummiest thing and you said it was the only thing you felt like knowing that your friend would also agree it was the yummiest thing and this would force her to relinquish it.

Is this something you do ? Making sure you get what you want ? Always ready with a convincing sob story ?

Did you order the tea to make her feel guilty ?

Were you truly unable to gather yourself for long enough to eat a pie or a sandwich or a quiche ?

Apologies if this isn’t the case but just occurred to me

Lavenderfarmcottage · 06/01/2025 16:31

You know each and everyone of us needs to get hobbies and a life don’t you ?

Alltheyearround · 06/01/2025 16:32

I'd ditch the friend and find a cafe with an abundant baked potato supply.

I love a baked potato but no way would I stand in my friend's way if that was all she fancied.

Nasty pasty! I work with someone like this, use any opportunity to score a little point. They are going to be lonely people some day.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 06/01/2025 16:33

If you are 100% sure she heard you say you didn't like the other options then she's not your friend, she's a selfish cow.

DowntonBlabbie · 06/01/2025 16:20

I'm following perfectly, thanks. She said she'd get the pie...but then realised she didn't want the pie. Same as OP didn't want the pie.

I've told you I've read all ops posts and fully understand them. But there's still nothing that shows anything different in either of them. They both wanted the potato, only one could have it. For some bizarre reason it had to be op and not cunty mcpieface.

When you think about it, the only serious question here is why did they go to such a shit place to eat anyway?

Are you the OP's 'friend?' Sounds like it. Wink

Said 'friend' knew the OP wanted the (last) jacket potato (and the 'friend' had already decided to have the egg and ham pie.) But then she had the (last) jacket potato at the last minute. Then she sat there stuffing her face, and grinning at the OP, and LOLing at the fact she had had the last jacket potato.

She was sitting there munching on the jacket potato while the OP ate nothing. She did not even offer to share. Spiteful, shitty, snaky, behaviour. And NOT the behaviour of a good friend! Very telling that you think the OP's 'friend' did nothing wrong.

!

Most of us do. Mumsnet is just a message forum that some people come onto, to chat and debate. I've got hobbies, and 'a life' ta! Hmm

What an odd post! Confused

You could say this about all the threads on here. And also facebook, twitter, instagram, tiktok, youtube, and just about anything really!

PlumHedgehog01 · 06/01/2025 16:41

some are odd and that is omg behaviour , its like half focusing etc

TheGander · 06/01/2025 16:46

This is surely the kind of thing Hannah Arendt had in mind when she coined the term “ the banality of evil”.

No it doesn't sound like it. Why are you so invested, and so horrible about ops friend? "Stuffing her face"...no, eating her lunch. You're so wound up about two complete strangers who may not even exist both wanting the same potato.
So weird.

And you still haven't said anything useful here. They both wanted the potato, neither wanted anything else. So one had it, the other sulked and posted here to encourage weirdos like you to go mental about it.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 06/01/2025 16:51

Lucyaugust2007 · 06/01/2025 15:46

I would have suggested we go somewhere else that had more choice.

Ham and egg pie sounds disgusting.

I imagine the ham n egg pie was probably quiche Lorraine

GreetingCeridwen · 06/01/2025 16:52

The potato is the real villain here.

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 16:54

pumpkinpillow · 06/01/2025 15:42

We can postulate as much as we like, which I suppose makes a nice debate or story, but you don't need to sneer at me for basing my opinions on what the OP has told us.

You don't think that there's always at least 2 sides to every story?

MaltipooMama · 06/01/2025 16:54

I would absolutely not do this, I'd have more likely said to you "shall we try somewhere else where we can both get something we like?" And tbh if I'd been you in that scenario I'd have probably left to get my lunch elsewhere!

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 16:55

MarkWithaC · 06/01/2025 15:44

Fussiness does my head in, but if it was a friend who I otherwise liked, and there were other things I'd happily have for lunch (like in this scenario), I'd not think twice about sticking to my original plan and leaving the potato for her.

You don't sound all that nice.

I'm not nice because I don't automatically let others chose first? Ok.

That would be a quiche not a pie. Here’s what I imagine.

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 15:10

Nope. They're the least inspiring and most mouth scalding food around.

Not in my experience they aren't.

I used to frequent a fast food place where the baked potatoes, sour cream and chives we're always something to look forward to and I could make a whole lunch out of it myself.

But I've also been at an off-peak time and the potatoes are either barely warm, wrinkly skinned, and very dry, or they are barely warm, wrinkly skinned and over steamed, likely from a slight attempt to rewarm it, which I agree is very uninspiring!🥔

BeLilacSloth · 06/01/2025 13:39

A couple of years a go I went out with four friends, we all ordered the same side with our meal. The waitress came over and said there was only 4 sides left. Everyone sat there and stared at me, obvoiusly I had to be the one to say ‘i’ll just have chips then’ it made me realise I was the only unselfish one there. This kind of thing has happened more than once with these friends 🥺

Edited

See in that case I would have asked how big the side was and asked the group if they were happy to get the 4 plus an extra plate and divided it between everyone…but I’m not an arse.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/01/2025 17:05

@mirandabaileyy that would annoy the hell out of me and I would have told her because I can never eat sandwiches in coffee shops or cafes! they always have butter on them and I dont eat that!!

OldieButBaddie · 06/01/2025 17:08

This thread has made me realise I no longer want to be on mumsnet.
I have come back fairly recently but to waste my precious life reading about some pathetic row over a jacket potato is simply ridiculous.
😳

Of course, but I'm talking to the OP based on the info she's given.
There are millions of "what ifs".

You could ask OP to confirm what you're thinking rather than challenge me on what I'm saying.

😳

It's the principal of the matter rather than the potato itself. I'm sure OP came to no harm in not having her spud, she's feeling a bit put out about how her friend treated her.

just a joke that I was making about myself also.

Love Mumsnet and it is getting me through the Aussie summer holidays which are isolating as a single Mum, boring at times & what is a really hard time for me personally.

If Mumsnet and threads like this were your hobby I think that’s fine xxx

Toodle pip then! 👋

It may seem petty and trivial to you, but the OP is clearly upset by it. And some people on here are just having a laugh! Maybe you should not take things so seriously, and just chill. 😎

You do you though, and leave Mumsnet if you wish... As a pp said Flouncers corner is that way. >>>

Sorry. Written words sometimes don't come across as they should as you can't see the person's face, and hear their tone. Smile
