Inverted Snobbery

I have noticed that MN has started to berate anybody who can afford to do or buy anything nice. See the recent 18k holiday thread with people calling the op grotesque.

Surely MN should be for all. For the rich, for the poor, and for everybody in the middle.

Now obviously if you are commenting on threads about people asking for advice who have a weekly shopping budget of £50 about how you shop in Selfridges food hall then you are an insensitive div.

But if you start a specific thread about a luxury holiday or what designer bag to get - then you should be allowed to do so without being labelled grotesque or having COL thrown at you.

But they are not normally hanging around wasting time blathering on some dumbass website - they are doing rich things! That's why it seems incongruous to me but I have been told!

I think you’d be very surprised who frequents this forum. What does “doing rich things” mean?

Like sitting in your counting house counting out your gold coins, or going out to dinner at a fancy place, or planning your next plastic surgery intervention. I don't know I just can't see someone like Beyonce on here. J-Lo? Maybe...

That said, I think I remember seeing that Paul McCartney spends a lot of his time watching Homes Under the Hammer so maybe he is here. Maybe he is you?

Yeah exactly it seems ... unlikely.

I have a friend who works for a luxury travel agency - her clients come to her with rough budget, what they require accomodation wise and vague thoughts on activities. She proposes a package using a number of contacts and providers, tweaks it to their responses, and they buy their ££££ holiday from her. According to her it's just what you do when you have loads of money. They don't have to spend time comparing prices on get your guide or trivago.

They don’t have to but maybe they like too, I know I do, I found it relaxing.

For my China tour next month I did use an agent who sorted it all out and saved me a lot of time as I didn’t really know where to start with the planning , however that is unusual for me.

I’m literally don’t know anybody that uses a travel agent - unless it’s for super specific trips like safaris etc and they will use a safari specialist.

Sorry I can't quote but yeah Chav etc is about wealth . Chav is a stereotype ie council house and violent. So yeah it's definitely about class not taste .It actually upsets my son how much prejudice there is for kids on Free school meals (which he was one) he worked at aged 16 and has gone into politics at that age too. . If it's not ok to use the term Karen it's also not ok to use the term chav/chavvy (which I only see on here) but also I don't live in my own bubble and I'm happy for people that have made in life ie my stepson

😂😂. Definitely not Paul McCartney, I’m female, although he’s lovely.

DecafDodger · 05/01/2025 22:24

Pretty sure Beyonce has a bigger budget than 18K for her holidays.

HauntedBungalow · 05/01/2025 22:34

Which boards do we think Paul McCartney posts on? Maybe property and DIY, if he likes homes under the hammer.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 05/01/2025 22:37

A family of five going to Orlando/Disney etc. could easily spend this much on a holiday when it’s all added up. I think there’s less judgement about a holiday like that than a childless couple going to stay in swanky hotels in the Maldives just because they can, which is odd really because you don’t get more capitalist than Disney! Also- generally speaking- I would think that unless we are talking ridiculous wealth your average family of five would have far less disposable income than a childless couple. It’s surely more distasteful to stretch yourself or get into debt for an £18k holiday than it is to go on one just because you can.

ForMintUser · 05/01/2025 23:22

I think the £18k holiday thread was a bit tasteless to mention the price. Asking “Maldives or Mauritius” for example wouldn’t come across as so in your face look at me and my pricey holiday.

At the same time you do get people who just don’t like people who have something they don’t have and will bitch and moan and find ways to tear them done because of it.

And let’s be honest we all know there are a lot of dickheads on the internet, Mumsnet will never be free of them like anything else online.

Yep, it depends on the type of holiday. We have used travel agents for more exotic trips: Jordan, Brazil, Cambodia and Georgia / Armenia. We wouldn’t use a travel agent for a trip to Spain, Greece, Italy, US, Mexico etc., anywhere I am reasonably familiar with (wouldn’t use one again for Brazil either, could have managed that on my own in hindsight…).

Each of those was 5 figures without flights for two of us (including guides, private transportation, good accommodation etc.) so 18k for a family of four for two weeks, including flights, is not an enormous amount.

Equally, if your idea of a holiday is a beach in Spain, then 18k may seem completely excessive when a good villa could be rented for 2k or so a week. Horses for courses.

I can't even afford a passport at the moment and haven't been out of the country in many years but these days, I'm not surprised at at 18 grand for a family holiday at all. I'm very surprised that so many people are shocked at it and can't believe it would happen though.
Loads of people go to Disney or to the Maldives etc and I assume it does cost a lot. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Our last holiday was to a Haven park and that cost enough tbh!
