Inverted Snobbery

I have noticed that MN has started to berate anybody who can afford to do or buy anything nice. See the recent 18k holiday thread with people calling the op grotesque.

Surely MN should be for all. For the rich, for the poor, and for everybody in the middle.

Now obviously if you are commenting on threads about people asking for advice who have a weekly shopping budget of £50 about how you shop in Selfridges food hall then you are an insensitive div.

But if you start a specific thread about a luxury holiday or what designer bag to get - then you should be allowed to do so without being labelled grotesque or having COL thrown at you.

Unless you've never booked holidays, I also find it hard to believe you can't imagine they might cost that much. If you have ever tried to book a holiday, it would not be unusual to come across flights and accommodation outside your price range. Like searching for hotels in X location for X dates - if you don't put filters on straigh away, you will see also luxury options costing thousands per night. You may not check them in detail, but you will notice they exist.

As I said, I went to Europe for 10 days last year. I stayed in what I thought was a v v v nice hotel, and it was less than £3k. To me, that’s a lot of money but it was for a big occasion. It’s hard to see how I could have spent more on that holiday! Of course I now get that if I was a family of five and we were flying business or first class long-haul for a month, that would be an entirely different holiday.

I want a Grand Floridian thread now! 😂 In the same boat - love Disney, but it's the cheap hotel or an offsite villa for us. That being said, I'm grateful we can do it and I certainly don't begrudge those staying at the nicer hotels (though one day I might book a single night at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for the fun of it).

I was speaking to a cast member who said a lot of people do that. One night at a super luxury resort - and then move on.

Just make sure you do it on an evening where it’s late night hours for deluxe guests.

I know 60 million pound apartments in London exist. I’m not in that world, nobody I know is in that world, and it’s not something I will ever be in a position to purchase. But I still know they exist - because I read, and watch the news, and see newspapers, and websites.

And all the money in the world couldn't cure her of her disingenuousness...

That’s a bit rude.

Well I got a bit annoyed because in that other post I thought by the way you were wording things about being upset about how people had posted that maybe you were very young and sensitive and might genuinely be traumatised by the interactions going on so I thought I would try wording things in a way that would let you understand why it's such an emotive issue for people by giving myself as an example. But now on here I notice you seem to be giving as good as you get so I feel like you need to be stood up to a bit. I am still not sure why you keep asking about air fares though?

Is it that house prices (and food prices and petrol prices, and other essentials) are in the news a lot - whereas holiday prices aren’t?

AllEndeavour · 05/01/2025 20:09

There is a cost of living crisis in the UK so i think it was a pretty tone deaf thing to post, however the thread was clearly labelled so people like myself who find it distasteful could avoid it. Those upset should have scrolled on.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 05/01/2025 20:10

I also think there's lots of assumptions made about higher earners. We're not all that out of touch 👀

I might ask for advice about a pricy holiday - or comment as a higher earner. But I also have exposure to 'the real world.' I'm just not relating to it at that second.

Not sure where in Europe, but in most places you could have had a more expensive holiday by booking a more expensive hotel than that, quite easily.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 05/01/2025 17:03

I would definitely be taken aback at someone spending 18k on a holiday but would I drop 18k on a horse if I had the money? Without a doubt 😂

@AMurderofMurderingCrows it wouldn't just be £18k on the horse though would it? Horses suck all the money from the next 10 generations of your family after you!

You need to be extremely wealthy as well as daft to own a horse I love horses but alas I'm too sensible and poor to won onr.

At today's prices it could very well be 18K on a horse

I think the private school VAT debate has really stoked up the divide.

Yep stoked by Phillipson's purposefully divisive (and false) language and tweets.

I think so, yes. News stories about celebrities etc will often mention the price of a house or a villa.

Just thinking about my lack of awareness that 18k holidays exist. It’s probably because holidays are so rarely on my radar.

Take e.g. prams. I don’t have babies, I don’t have any friends or relatives with babies. I have no idea at all how much a pram costs today. You could tell me £200 or £2000 and I’d believe you. That’s not snobbery, it’s just that I don’t spend any time looking at prams or the cost of prams. Everyone must have something like that.

cocoloco23 · 05/01/2025 20:23

Oops, didn’t mean to quote that post about private schools

MJconfessions · 05/01/2025 20:27

This website can be weird, apparently there’s people here from every income bracket including millionaires and those in poverty

I agree. Mumsnet in general has a race to the bottom attitude about most things, I've noticed.

Yes, I agree.

Flopsy145 · 05/01/2025 20:32

Plain and simple jealousy and resentment! Many people always covet what they can't afford

Rewis · 05/01/2025 20:33

Just picking a random date in July a nice hotel in Gran Canaria for 2 weeks all inclusive for family of 4 is over £13k on TUI. Yes you can also a hotel for slightly over 4k.
18k is insane amount of money but very very easy to spend without even getting to what I'd consider luxury.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 05/01/2025 20:37

For instance I have couple of friends who do Ikos in summer and Dubai in winter year in year out. Those two holidays will cost approximately 18-20k. And they are very ordinary people who live on a nice, but ordinary housing estate with tiny gardens and parking for 1.5 cars. All kids in regular state school. They are high earners but regular PAYE and not anywhere near millionaires/super rich.

If you want a luxury holiday, especially during the school holidays, that’s what is going to cost.

stbeaker · 05/01/2025 20:39

cocoloco23 · 05/01/2025 20:19

Emirates first class cabin at 20k was all over the news as well.

Were on the bones of our arses when DCs were small so any kind of holiday was rare and as cheap as possible, usually in UK
This year DH and I are going interrailing for 10 days, with first class passes and various hotel stops in Italy and France. I am horrified that we are spending about 3K on this!!! It seems the height of extravagance. But very exciting.
