Inverted Snobbery

I have noticed that MN has started to berate anybody who can afford to do or buy anything nice. See the recent 18k holiday thread with people calling the op grotesque.

Surely MN should be for all. For the rich, for the poor, and for everybody in the middle.

Now obviously if you are commenting on threads about people asking for advice who have a weekly shopping budget of £50 about how you shop in Selfridges food hall then you are an insensitive div.

But if you start a specific thread about a luxury holiday or what designer bag to get - then you should be allowed to do so without being labelled grotesque or having COL thrown at you.

I think it’s silly to say you’re unaware that £18k holidays exist. They are way beyond anything I could ever come close to affording, I grew up in poverty, didn’t go abroad until my 20s and although I’m doing ok I still don’t have a huge amount of money, but of course I am aware that other people do!

For those saying they didn’t know these holidays exist, how much do you think Simon cowell spends on a holiday? Or Beyoncé? Or any super rich person?

But they are not normally hanging around wasting time blathering on some dumbass website - they are doing rich things! That's why it seems incongruous to me but I have been told!

I don't know maybe I am being naive and Beyonce and Simon Cowell are spending a lot of time on mumsnet. If you're out there, can you please reveal yourselves?

I was speaking to a cast member who said a lot of people do that. One night at a super luxury resort - and then move on.

Just make sure you do it on an evening where it’s late night hours for deluxe guests.

This can be more achievable than you might realise - rent DVC points. We’ve been able to stay in a few bucket list resorts this way. As long as you don’t mind moving about a few times during your trip (and Disney will transfer your luggage for you between resorts) it’s very doable.

We went in October and got Wildness lodge for a great rate.

I love Wilderness Lodge, one of my favs. I’d like to spend Christmas there one day. 😊

OP, don't you realize that you're only allowed to be rich if you are part of the royal family?

SwirlyWhirls · 05/01/2025 20:53

I haven’t seen the 18k holiday thread but that does sound quite ridiculous. My partner and I are child-free, both on what most of us would consider good incomes, multiple holidays per year… but even (pessimistically) reducing that to £9k for us not having children… WTF? 😂

Spending 18k on a holiday. There is more to life. If nothing else, why not split that cost between multiple holidays, and have more fun? Some of the best holidays are honestly the cheapest.

Each to their own obviously, but this is a discussion forum so it’s reasonable for people to express their opinions.

Of course there is more to life than holidays. Who has suggested there isn’t?

Say you don’t need to split the costs?

@stbeaker do you work for a high end travel agency? Why are you so obsessed with this issue, you're like a dog with a bone? it's most odd. I know I should just walk away but I have somehow got enmeshed in this nonsense

DecafDodger · 05/01/2025 21:07

Because I want to visit Costa Rica and Bora Bora, and not have a fun domestic camping holiday with my own tent?

SlapTheMelon · 05/01/2025 21:08

SpringIscomingalso · 05/01/2025 19:28

Clearly ok, let's say she had access to these holidays and she is the mother. She is with the kids. So who earns the money? Him. Yes, it is family pot but he earns the money, however she need to come and brag about it on here. Now, that is very low class

That's some sexist assumption? Some of women earn more than husbands or have inheritance.

There are always many options of how to spend your money. An 18k holiday would never be my preference but - as I said - each to their own.

DecafDodger · 05/01/2025 21:10

That is such an odd statement. Like all mothers of 10 and 14yo kids are SAHMs?

Where do you buy your clothes? Why buy one dress from Zara when you could buy 10 for the same price from Primark? Your logic is - well, illogical

What do you spend on all your holidays a year though?

We have multiple holidays a year (although many on this forum dont consider long weekends a holiday whereas I do), we have some weeks here, some abroad, some breaks here some abroad

We spend probably around 10k on those

Add in a couple of kids and that could double and rather than have about 9 or so holidays a year I might condense that into 1 and theres your 18k easily

DecafDodger · 05/01/2025 21:13

You sure won't get to go to Bora Bora with your family for less than that though. Also, OP wasn't asking how she could spend less and have more cheap holidays.

Neither. But, as I keep saying, each to their own 🙏 We all make our own choices. Personally if I discussed any large purchase on a public discussion forum I’d expect some people to question it, as we all have different priorities.

There's more to life than what?
Sure some of the best holidays we have had have been cheap. But most of the best holidays we have had cost upward of £30k

What's your point?

I take it you prefer to buy 10items from primark than 1 decent one from Cos. Or buy the cheapest chicken you can find over the cornfed organic one. That's your choice but not one I would make.

Bizarre and completely wrong assumptions about someone you know nothing about. Having ethical, fair trade, sustainability and animal welfare concerns doesn’t make me want to fly business class, for example. But - as per all of my other posts - each to their own.

Scottishskifun · 05/01/2025 21:29

I've found it's not confined to MN, I know why it's increased is the COL but at the same time what people choose to spend money on and how they budget is entirely up to them.

I have a friend who usually makes a quick remark if we go on holiday and how nice it must be to live the life of Riley (im good at finding deals and we also go camping in the summer) but then in the next statement says she would never let her children wear second hand clothes which to me is a lot of money frequently compared to my £20 vinted bundles!
