If I were to pop over to your house right now, what would you offer me?

(This being MN, that's assuming you'd let me in!
Also assuming we knew each other, and not just total internet randoms😅)

Interested to see if you would use this opportunity to get rid of most of your Christmas goodies like I am doing when people have stopped by.

Here, you would be offered any of the following - 2 boxes of Fox's classics biscuits, a box of McVities Victoria biscuits, Waitrose classic panettone, a tin of Royal dansk danish butter cookies, 2 boxes Thornton classic, an After Eight Selection box, a large tray of Ferrero Rocher and a box of Guylian deluxe seashells - all unopened!

(Don't worry, a couple of these will go to work with me tomorrow to be shared with colleagues and the rest will be going to my neighbour who organises the local food bank donation boxes)

You'd also have a choice of a variety of teas and coffees, prosecco or Bucks Fizz!

Chocolate pannetone, biscuits or cheese scones fresh out of the oven here. Shepardess pie will be ready in about 40 minutes if you can hang around. I have a Sage coffee machine and a selection of sryrups so any coffee you like, loads of teas and an open bottle of white wine...any good ?

Fifthtimelucky · 05/01/2025 18:00

I have masses of Christmas leftovers because I completely failed to take into account the fact that one of my daughters was disappearing on Boxing Day and the other is now a vegan.

My husband is very set in his ways when it comes to food and likes to eat the same stuff all the time. That means that he doesn't touch the extra Christmas stuff (except for chocolate and there is still masses of that).

Sherararara · 05/01/2025 18:00

The door

Jennyjennyitsabox · 05/01/2025 18:15

Tea , earl grey or Yorkshire
Coffee
( No booze tho😁) all gone
Home made mince pie
Quality street 🤢

DilemmaDelilah · 05/01/2025 18:16

Definitely no Christmas leftovers! You would be greeted with the offer of a drink - hot/cold/alcoholic/non-alcoholic, then you could share our meal - spaghetti bolognese, then cheese and biscuits or ice cream.

We do have some chocolates but they will be eaten until they run out. We don't have an excess of cheese - again that will get eaten. DH is eating his way through the Christmas cake. We haven't started the Christmas pudding yet but that will keep until we feel like eating it. The nibbles have nearly been finished. The turkey is sliced, vacuum packed and in the freezer. That's about it!

Basketry · 05/01/2025 18:18

I’m on Mumsnet so I wouldn’t answer the door to you.

Actually, I have nothing in at the moment so that might actually be true!

GruffaloChildCrimbo · 05/01/2025 18:18

You can have all the fudges, caramels, toffee pennies and truffles from my Quality Street and Roses. You're welcome <in a Dwayne Johnson voice>

PopGoesBang · 05/01/2025 18:25

@DebbieTheCat She's delightful sometimes! Honestly.

I'll go check the hero's tin and see what is left, just in case we can get a world record for dinky deckers left over.

BlackChunkyBoots · 05/01/2025 18:29

Biscuits, biscuits and more biscuits. There's always KitKats at my house. Various herbal teas, loose Red Label, tea bags, Cafe Azera, and there might be some hot chocolate at the back. I have crisps!

Knittedfairies2 · 05/01/2025 18:29

I've just baked a loaf and some date flapjacks.

SnakesAndArrows · 05/01/2025 18:31

Chocolate with chocolate on the side and then afterwards, chocolate. Also maybe an elderly mince pie resurrected in the air fryer.

Nobody gave me any gin so you’re out of luck there.

mondaytosunday · 05/01/2025 18:33

I have an unopened box of Fox's variety biscuits. That and tea coffee. Though I see it's after 6 so maybe wine!

MrsTulip · 05/01/2025 18:37

un opened bottle of Baileys, 2 large unopened boxes of dairy box, large unopened box of mixed lint balls, various other bits of chocolates and sweets (but they're DS) pringles and a homemade chocolate fudge birthday cake with white chocolate buttons that was made this afternoon for DS but we will be cutting into it about 7:30 so you need to get over here quick if you want a slice.

MamaBobo · 05/01/2025 18:39

Oh my goodness @PopGoesBang ….your first post had me in conniptions and now I hear you have Dinky Deckers??? I’m on my way!!!

ObieJoyful · 05/01/2025 18:41

We have Christmas cake and hot drinks.

No alcohol or chocolate, I’m afraid!

Beginningtolookalot · 05/01/2025 18:43

Tea or coffee and homemade flapjacks made yesterday … I would have been relieved I had something to offer ! Christmas stuff largely eaten

curious79 · 05/01/2025 18:48

Roast pigeon, panzanella, and some Pringles

BeeCucumber · 05/01/2025 19:11

@MrsSethGecko - here is the recipe - it is a Delia with added cherries and chocolate. It also works with dried apricots, or cranberries.

INGREDIENTS

  • 150g soft brown sugar
  • 225g butter
  • 1 rounded tablespoon golden syrup
  • 350g porridge oats
  • 200g dried black cherries
  • 100g Belgium dark chocolate drops

Pre-heat the oven to 150°C, gas mark 2

You will need an Oblong Tin 20cm by 26cm, 4cm deep, with a liner (or similar).

METHOD
First place the sugar, butter and golden syrup together in a saucepan and heat it gently until the butter has melted, giving it a stir now and then.
Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the porridge oats, cherries and chocolate drops mixing thoroughly. Now pour the mixture into the prepared tin and press it out evenly, using the back of a tablespoon or your hand. Bake near the centre of the oven for 40-45 minutes. Then allow the mixture to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before cutting into oblong bars.
Leave them in the tin until they're quite cold before removing them to store in an airtight tin.

Enjoy!

@MamaBobo please can you txt when outside, only the strong willed one is currently complying with the sleep thing. Don't need the dog getting wind of a door knock and ruining things.

Who knew it would be dinky deckers that sealed the deal. Could have sworn it would be the tomato puree but clearly just DH that has an obsession with it!

HurdyGurdy19 · 06/01/2025 10:03

@PopGoesBang - the tubes of tomato puree resonated with me.

We had a new kitchen last year, doubling the size of our old one. The old one was so badly laid out, and I could never find anything, leading to duplicate purchases.

Then when the work was being done, the kitchen was essentially put into a storage unit with a very basic kitchen set up on the dining table. And more duplicates being bought.

So now I have the "cupboard of shame" where all the duplicates are stored until needed.

This includes:-
Three bottles of balsamic vinegar
Three jars of Dijon mustard
Two jars of pickled red cabbage (that no one eats, so why even one jar was bought is a mystery)
Five tubes of tomato puree
Three bottles of light soy sauce
Two bottles of dark soy sauce
A ridiculous number of packs of dark brown sugar

Etc etc etc 😂

How's the strong willed one this morning @PopGoesBang 😂
I happen to like feisty ones, the ones who, during pick up, are handed over with a resigned look and a sigh "X was... <diplomatic pause> full of beans today..."
and are described in school reports as "quite a character".
Ask me how I know 😆

I'll take the strong willed one today, plus a tube of tomato puree if they're still going spare 😉

@HurdyGurdy19 Bonus points if they're dated 2017 😂

@HurdyGurdy19 That is impressive!
I fully blame DH as he does the shopping. He seems to go through phases where no matter if we have an item or not, he buys it again for a period of time. Brown sugar featured on the list in 24, along with garlic, onions (we now have puréed garlic and onion paste in ice cubes in the freezer - that could cause some fun with a tweenager who pays no attention come the summer) and to end the year the tomato puree.
Good luck with the red cabbage usage...

@DebbieTheCat I'll hazard a guess it's first hand experience 🤣 she started nursery in Sept, and despite having few words at the time her key worker said she's very capable of letting everyone know exactly what it is she wants.
She has just completed getting herself dressed this morning, can't remember what time that was started...
she's waiting until her sister and dad are home to do most things - so they'll have fun this evening.
My first totally fooled me into a second!

DD (cat like one) was usually handed over with "we think she had a good day, we didn't see much of her"
DS (dog) wasn't handed over so much as "ah, Hopping, a quick word please". Never anything malicious just an excess of enthusiasm and an inability to have any kind of verbal of physical filter.

Bluevelvetsofa · 06/01/2025 11:38

Gin, vodka, Mediterranean tonic, orange and apple juice, tea and coffee to drink.

A box of assorted chocolate biscuits, mince pies, Matchmakers, Toblerone, Toblerone, Toblerone bites, orange marzipan rounds, cherry marzipan rounds, truffles, crisps, cheese twists.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 06/01/2025 11:43

You'd get tea or coffee and you'd look at my fat arse wobbling away to go make it and you'd know exactly why I have no leftover Christmas goodies for you.
