Is there a speed box thing that can be added to a car?? I now have 10 points!!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 15:54

Had the letters through last week to say id picked up 6 points. 3 points on two consecutive days at the same spot - one for 33mph and other for 35mph. I was hoping for the offer of a speed awareness course for one. But thats not an option.

Im worrying now as I drive for a living. And in January 2023 I picked up 3 points that i appealed and really lucked out and was given 4 points instead. I thought i had a genuine reason to appeal but obviously they thought otherwise. Fair enough.

It does mean i now have 10 points. Im not worried about the urge to speed, more about the occasions you realise you've slipped to 32mph or 33mph before correcting and if i'm unlucky that there's a speed camera there at the time. If i get another 3 points. Google says its a 6 month ban.

I wondered if there's a part, that you can get added to the car that controls speed??

Or should i target my speed to 5mph below he speed limits so that if i go a little above, im still below??

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

I suppose im asking how do i manage this rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

DP was using an app for his driving test practice and it beeped every time you went over the speed limit, maybe try looking at the setting on Google maps or see if there’s a similar one.

handmademitlove · 31/12/2024 15:59

You can use cruise control if you have it. You can also install apps on your phone that beep when you are speeding, but these are not always accurate in roadworks etc.

Didntseeyouthere · 31/12/2024 16:00

Obviously the question is: why are you finding it so difficult to keep to the speed limit? Surely if you are driving for a living now, you need to be able to keep track.

What vehicle do you drive at home / work?

Are you getting tickets on one vehicle or both?

Isn't that what a speedometer is for ?

Cherrysoup · 31/12/2024 16:01

You can have a limiter put on your gas pedal, I remember a mate had that. Obviously not much cop when you have to remember to keep it at 30.

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 31/12/2024 16:02

You just need to concentrate on the fucking road, including the speed limits Hmm

If you need a device to do your concentrating for you then tbh you shouldn't be driving at all.

mitogoshigg · 31/12/2024 16:02

My cruise control has a max speed setting so you can't speed accidentally. It's mid range and 8 years old so guessing it's commonplace

BertieBotts · 31/12/2024 16:02

Yes it's called a speed limiter. Not sure how you get them installed - maybe at a garage? But it probably won't be useful for 30mph zones, I think they just limit your top speed to 70 or whatever.

If 30mph zones are the issue then targeting 5 below might make sense.

Sunnysidegold · 31/12/2024 16:04

My car has a limiter built in. I use it in 30mph areas mostly.

An app would work well for you I think. Seeing as you've been caught twice in the same place you'll probably be more likely to keep the speed low there.

Rotten luck in appealing 3 points but ending up with four!

Hesonlyakidharry · 31/12/2024 16:04

Look, not judging really harshly here because i’ve definitely gone over the speed limit, but i’ve always been aware that i’ve gone over. It’s never been an accident.
How are you creeping over the limit often and not noticing? That really is just inattentive poor driving.
Sort yourself out. Pay attention to your speed and stop speeding up when you know you’re near the limit. Pat attention if you hit a downhill point or a very straight road or an empty road, just pay attention.

TinyRebel · 31/12/2024 16:05

Thirty in third and use Waze with its irritating speed alerts wherever you go.
Concentration helps too.

Vibing · 31/12/2024 16:05

@CraftyNavySeal thanks i'll look at that

Have you considered driving a little slower?

I think you need to accept you are a poor driver and address it. A few lessons might help.

CatSkillo · 31/12/2024 16:05

You can set Waze to beep every time you go over the limit, although it might not pick up temporary limits.

Sunnysidegold · 31/12/2024 16:06

Just to add, I can set the speed limiter at any speed. My car recognises changes in speed limits and I can tap a button to adjust to that, but I can also increase and decrease like you would with cruise control.

My old car beeped when I hit my limit, my new car kind of holds me at the limited speed unless I consciously accelerate to go over it if that makes sense.

Ilovemyshed · 31/12/2024 16:06

One of the key things taught on a speed awareness course is using gears to limit speed if you have a manual car.

Otherwise, buy a car that has a speed limiter and use it.

Vibing · 31/12/2024 16:06

@TinyRebel thanks thats a good idea too re the third gear. I'll look at Waze, ive not used it before

There is already a "part". It's called your foot.

Oh, and there is a handy gadget called a speedometer on all cars that tells you how fast you are going.

Oblomov24 · 31/12/2024 16:09

I'd like the same. Automatic speed limiter, so it only went 30 in a 30, 40 in a 40.

Vibing · 31/12/2024 16:09

I have a 2012 car, so no cruise controls. I have to park in all types of areas and my previous car had wing mirrors knocked off, dents kicked in. I chose to replace it with a good old model which is a godsend. Doesnt attract the same attention. But it doesnt have cruise control.

Newish cars have a camera at the front that picks up the road signs and shows the speed on the display. If you go faster, it flashes and beeps. E.g. Toyotas have this. Have you checked your car manual?

Vibing · 31/12/2024 16:14

Thank you for all advice...

Is the Waze app a navigation system. I want to make sure i get the right thing?

Whatever you do, don't drive in Wales - if you can't keep to 30mph then you'll never cope with all our 20mph roads!!!

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 31/12/2024 16:25

Waze will help.

I think people are being harsh as 33 in a 30 is so easy to do without realising it.

Obviously they all have their halos glittering when they drive!

JohnMcClanesVest · 31/12/2024 16:26

It’s good that you’re looking for something to help you but I’m surprised that the 10 points don’t remedy your heavy right foot. Good luck, just FYI if you are caught over the limit again you can only claim exceptional hardship once to stop a disqualification from driving.
