Is there a speed box thing that can be added to a car?? I now have 10 points!!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 15:54

Had the letters through last week to say id picked up 6 points. 3 points on two consecutive days at the same spot - one for 33mph and other for 35mph. I was hoping for the offer of a speed awareness course for one. But thats not an option.

Im worrying now as I drive for a living. And in January 2023 I picked up 3 points that i appealed and really lucked out and was given 4 points instead. I thought i had a genuine reason to appeal but obviously they thought otherwise. Fair enough.

It does mean i now have 10 points. Im not worried about the urge to speed, more about the occasions you realise you've slipped to 32mph or 33mph before correcting and if i'm unlucky that there's a speed camera there at the time. If i get another 3 points. Google says its a 6 month ban.

I wondered if there's a part, that you can get added to the car that controls speed??

Or should i target my speed to 5mph below he speed limits so that if i go a little above, im still below??

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

I suppose im asking how do i manage this rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

I feel your pain OP I've just been caught doing 35mph in 30mph stretch of A road where it's goes from 40 to 30 to 40.
I did a speed awareness course 10months ago for same thing on a different unfamiliar road.
Kicking myself!!
People are being holier than thou on this thread but I live on outskirts of a rural village within 30mph zone and I swear to god almost all the cars do at least 40 outside my house but of course no speed cameras on my road.
I drive a 11 year old automatic so hasn't got lots of gadgets and cant use gears to keep speed under control. It's easy for speed to creep up and neither of us were exactly bombing it along.
You must be doing a lot of miles on unfamiliar roads and that also won't help you. But are you sure you won't get offered speed awareness course?
I'm off to investigate waze!

Oh no! Will you get offered a course a second time?

This. I take it you’re driving automatic OP? I think that manual would be better for you - harder to speed and increased focus needed.

Edited

Oh that's interesting about manual and automatic.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2025 02:07

I disagree about manual v automatic.

You can hear the difference between the gears and the engine sound at different speeds in an automatic, and if you're focusing at all you'll be aware of your speed.

@Dutchhouse14 I agree about rural living. So many stretches of roads feel like they should be more and many of them used to be! It's so easy to creep up without realising it (when you only have trees either side of you!!)

My car has a limiter you can set. I get a lot of aggressive tailgaters though

You may need to check the speed on your speedo vs satnav - I used to get tailgated a lot when I had a car that read the full 10% allowed under.

I wish tailgaiting was a specific offence with objective criteria and cameras could detect that too though. It's such bad driving.

Livelovebehappy · 01/01/2025 09:53

AsTheLightFades · 31/12/2024 19:03

It isn't a first offence. No excuse for this type of driving. One may as well be over the limit. What's worse, the OP drives for a living.
Disgusting

Driving just 5 miles over in a thirty mile zone? I think that's forgivable. Those that use our roads like race tracks, not so much.

Forgiveable until a child is killed?
'Reasonable' movement oF parameters people don't like is just for their convenience and is so selfish. "I'm only 5 minutes after the meter expired', "I'm only parked on your driveway for 2 mins while I pick up my child", "They were only 6mg/mmol over the limit"
With that attitude, there is no point in any rule or law.

The law rightfully fines people for going over the limit, and op recognises this, and is trying to get advice on how to stop it. Therefore doesn't need to be hung drawn and quartered on here for it. It happened. No child got killed here. Great that some are perfect and never make errors of judgement. But some of us sometimes are not as perfect.

There's a difference between an error of judgement and doing it so frequently you end up with points on your licence. Similarly, repeated selfish behaviours are way beyond errors of judgement.
How can anyone advise the OP how not to drive dangerously when it is their job to drive (presumably losing job if no licence) and the consequences are obvious? It's not the OPs first offence, so clearly they were not concerned enough to address this the first time, nor until such a high number of points was arrived at.
Maybe it will take an accident to chenge behaviour.

So many people commenting have never been in a job involving heavy use of a car for a living. I'm a sales rep and many of my colleagues have been up to 6 or 9 points, certainly not from driving dangerously but because we are navigating thousands of miles in familliar and unfamilliar areas and it's easy to go 2 or 3 miles slightly over the limit when you're going through so many changes in speed limits all the time. I'd love to see some of you do our annual mileage and still come out squeaky clean!

OP, buy a Road Angel, Snooper or Radar. My colleagues who got up to 6 or 9 have done and have found them very helpful. Just have a check of where is legal to use one.

I drive extensively for work in unfamiliar areas. Guess what? As it’s an unfamiliar area I drive more slowly! Amazing that I have the autonomy and forethought to do this! It’s like I’ve been given a magic gift that isn’t available to other drivers who drive in unfamiliar areas!

Take some responsibility for goodness sake, slow down, it isn’t rocket science. Stop making excuses for people who speed.

I have no points on my licence.

You just need to concentrate on the fucking road, including the speed limits Hmm

If you need a device to do your concentrating for you then tbh you shouldn't be driving at all.

Agree!

Well done you. Op has been punished and is well aware that she broke the law. She's asking for help in not repeating it. You know, like lots of people in life who know they've done wrong and are asking for help. Are you as lacking in offering up help irl, or do you just save your riteous lectures for those on the internet?!

But the OP is repeating it.

10 points is four offences. One waived for a SAC, two 3 pointers, and the 4 pointer from bad appeal.

Asking for a device to automatically slow the car down is not responsible driving or taking responsibility for the repeating pattern of behaviour. I've known people with this problem, I've known them switch to public transport for a few months until the first 3pts expire and they feel they've got a bot more breathing room for mistakes on their licence. They shouldn't be driving if they can't follow the rules of the road.

sdgt · 01/01/2025 13:17

I've noticed that when my car tells me I'm going at 30 for example, it if I drive past a speed detector thing it reads well below 30, around 26mph, so to consistently go above that means you'd have to be driving well in excess of 30.
The same thing for the speed it reads on my sat nav, it's always below the actual car reading.

Shubbypubby · 01/01/2025 16:09

You must have really poor observation skills OP- do you not notice speed cameras? I'll get MN hate for this but I passed my test 8 years ago and drive a few hundreds miles a week for my commute and often exceed speed limits (a lot of motorway driving) and don't have any points. Also do you not pay any attention to speed? The amount of people I see who do 40 through 30/40/50 sections is ridiculous. Open your eyes! Phone sat navs like Google maps will tell you where there are speed cameras including mobile ones.

Shubbypubby · 01/01/2025 16:12

And you don't even need a sat nav telling you/ just look at speed signs and fixed camera signs. I know there are mobile cameras but you've been really sloppy to accrue so many points.

All these wonderful holier than thou people saying 'just don't speed, it's simple' - can you honestly say you've never gone over the speed limit? Bet you can't. OP, I hope you find a solution to keep you on track.

I never go over the speed limit, because I like my licence, I have to drive a lot for work and I'm responsible enough to play my part to keep other road users and pedestrians safe.

I do 27 in a 30. On motorways I use my speed limiter and set it to 70mph, on a dual carriageway I drive for the road conditions which may be 70 or may be 50 (I live in Milton Keynes, rarely make it above 50 between roundabouts). If I'm driving somewhere unfamiliar I slow down further, as I don't know where the next side junction might be etc.

It's really not hard to be a sensible driver. But then MN seems to think anyone doing less than 85mph on the motorway are the devil.

Help, or a way of not concentrating and doing what most other drivers manage?
Basically, OP wants a way to stop them speeding. Why she needs to ask an internet forum how is beyond common sense. It's obvious how to stop speeding.
