Is there a speed box thing that can be added to a car?? I now have 10 points!!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 15:54

Had the letters through last week to say id picked up 6 points. 3 points on two consecutive days at the same spot - one for 33mph and other for 35mph. I was hoping for the offer of a speed awareness course for one. But thats not an option.

Im worrying now as I drive for a living. And in January 2023 I picked up 3 points that i appealed and really lucked out and was given 4 points instead. I thought i had a genuine reason to appeal but obviously they thought otherwise. Fair enough.

It does mean i now have 10 points. Im not worried about the urge to speed, more about the occasions you realise you've slipped to 32mph or 33mph before correcting and if i'm unlucky that there's a speed camera there at the time. If i get another 3 points. Google says its a 6 month ban.

I wondered if there's a part, that you can get added to the car that controls speed??

Or should i target my speed to 5mph below he speed limits so that if i go a little above, im still below??

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

I suppose im asking how do i manage this rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

Yep, I was right..speed limiters becoming mandated in Europe
with all the nanny state whinging we had when speed belts were mandated

I think if it's happening that often, I'd get my speedo checked. If its fine, you're just going to have to be more aware of your speed. I'm not going to claim I never speed, I do but I'm usually aware of it.

Similarly you should be watching the road. How are you missing all these speed cameras? They're bright yellow and there're markings on the road. When you are approaching one, don't you check your speed? Even if I'm on an empty carriageway driving like a lunatic I can spot a camera a mile off. Why aren't you seeing them?

AlexanderArnold · 31/12/2024 20:37

Not all speed cameras are yellow boxes! And personally I wouldn't rely on waze or sat nav to tell me the speed limit either as it isn't always correct and that is not a defence if you are caught speeding. Learn the rules of the roads, watch the signs and I personally really rate my speed limiter.

Tristar15 · 31/12/2024 20:37

You have a speedometer in your car and you concentrate on your driving, that’s how you stick to speed limits. You are negligent and careless when driving so clearly deserve the points. Maybe getting a six month ban will actually force you to focus more and drive less carelessly. Needless to say I have no sympathy. Slow down, you don’t a beeping machine to tell you to do that.

helpmyback · 31/12/2024 20:37

Cruise control is really common since 2010 on mode range cars too so you may have it

It's how I drive in 30/ 40 zones

Sometimes it's on the centre console

My mum had it and didn't know

VegTrug · 31/12/2024 20:37

Hang on, you got 3 points, appealed it and was given 4 instead???

purplepandas · 31/12/2024 20:41

My car is old. I use Waze too and find it helpful. I am particularly anxious about speeding so useful. Don't have cruise control either. Mine also reads under my Speedo ( old style with no numbers) so go with Speedo just in case.

I do find people get frustrated with my slow ( at the limit) driving sadly.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 31/12/2024 20:41

So many people commenting have never been in a job involving heavy use of a car for a living. I'm a sales rep and many of my colleagues have been up to 6 or 9 points, certainly not from driving dangerously but because we are navigating thousands of miles in familliar and unfamilliar areas and it's easy to go 2 or 3 miles slightly over the limit when you're going through so many changes in speed limits all the time. I'd love to see some of you do our annual mileage and still come out squeaky clean!

OP, buy a Road Angel, Snooper or Radar. My colleagues who got up to 6 or 9 have done and have found them very helpful. Just have a check of where is legal to use one.

You just need to concentrate on the fucking road, including the speed limits Hmm

If you need a device to do your concentrating for you then tbh you shouldn't be driving at all.

This. I take it you’re driving automatic OP? I think that manual would be better for you - harder to speed and increased focus needed.

purplepandas · 31/12/2024 20:42

Good point re Waze not always being accurate though, it is sometimes slow to see changes in speed.

I work country wide and travel a lot. Some of us do manage it.

Anybody that uses these deserves to have their driving license revoked.

Why? The reason they are legal is because they are considered to make people drive more safely.

noobiedoobie · 31/12/2024 20:51

Have you ever actually done thr speed awareness course? Or just had points? Do you know why you were going over the speed limit?

I got caught speeding and am doing the course this week. Was talking to parent about it and they said that at something like 40 mph a pedestrian has a 90% chance of death and at 30mph they have a 90% chance of survival. Something like that. Was quite sobering. Nothing is more important than reducing speed. Hoping I learn from the course too.

For me, I've only been driving for 2.5 years and the incident happened on an unfamiliar stretch of road when I was running late. So was doing 37mph in 30mph zone.

The irony is that when I was coming back from the same place yesterday I think I was doing 33mph past the speed camera, I really hope that isn't picked up. It looks like a long stretch of road but then suddenly there's a 30mph sign which flashes, so 1 second its off 1 second it's on. Not the most visible.

So for me I need to check the route in advance. Leave in plenty of time. Be extra careful if not familiar.

Tom Tom beeps if you speed - but the day you are caught will be the day they didnt work or you forgot the charger...so you have to just train yourself to check your speed.

Yeah.. when the device detects and warns the driver of a speed camera/police presence nearby. What about the rest of the time?

A safe, law obeying driver shouldn’t need to know where any potential speed cameras may be hiding!

sorechalfonts · 31/12/2024 20:57

My car has a limiter you can set. I get a lot of aggressive tailgaters though

VegTrug · 31/12/2024 20:37

I imagine they chose to go to court rather than accept a conditional offer, provided mitigation which wasn’t accepted or had a lesser fine in exchange for more points.
Regarding the two new offences if they were doing 33/35 in a 30 their speedo would have shown more. There’s potential to challenge the 33 in a 30 due to the calibration of the speed camera, from when my friend worked for the police safer roads team they didn’t do anything less than 34 in a 30 because they aren’t spot on accurate.

anon199900 · 31/12/2024 21:27

This thread is hilarious, everyone making out they always do dead on 30 and how can the OP possibly even ask such a stupid question.

Come on let’s be realistic most people don’t drive dead on 30. We aren’t taking 40 in a 30!!

I forgot mumsnet has people who are just perfect all of the time.

According to RAC they are required to be since a law change in 2016. I don't remember the last time I saw one that wasn't. They're always visible and precluded by plenty of signage.

AlexanderArnold · 31/12/2024 21:51

Gosh. I had no idea! So some of the cameras I've been passing may not actually be speed cameras after all. Thank you!

queenmeadhbh · 31/12/2024 22:55

there’s one road in particular near me that feels like a 40 but it’s a 30. I just instinctively drive at 38 mph on it!!! To fix that I did the 3rd gear trick - just checked myself before moving into 4th and if I was in an area with street lights stayed in 3rd.

Dutchhouse14 · 31/12/2024 23:44

I feel your pain OP I've just been caught doing 35mph in 30mph stretch of A road where it's goes from 40 to 30 to 40.
I did a speed awareness course 10months ago for same thing on a different unfamiliar road.
Kicking myself!!
People are being holier than thou on this thread but I live on outskirts of a rural village within 30mph zone and I swear to god almost all the cars do at least 40 outside my house but of course no speed cameras on my road.
I drive a 11 year old automatic so hasn't got lots of gadgets and cant use gears to keep speed under control. It's easy for speed to creep up and neither of us were exactly bombing it along.
You must be doing a lot of miles on unfamiliar roads and that also won't help you. But are you sure you won't get offered speed awareness course?
I'm off to investigate waze!
