Is there a speed box thing that can be added to a car?? I now have 10 points!!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 15:54

Had the letters through last week to say id picked up 6 points. 3 points on two consecutive days at the same spot - one for 33mph and other for 35mph. I was hoping for the offer of a speed awareness course for one. But thats not an option.

Im worrying now as I drive for a living. And in January 2023 I picked up 3 points that i appealed and really lucked out and was given 4 points instead. I thought i had a genuine reason to appeal but obviously they thought otherwise. Fair enough.

It does mean i now have 10 points. Im not worried about the urge to speed, more about the occasions you realise you've slipped to 32mph or 33mph before correcting and if i'm unlucky that there's a speed camera there at the time. If i get another 3 points. Google says its a 6 month ban.

I wondered if there's a part, that you can get added to the car that controls speed??

Or should i target my speed to 5mph below he speed limits so that if i go a little above, im still below??

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

I suppose im asking how do i manage this rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

One of the key things taught on a speed awareness course is using gears to limit speed if you have a manual car.

AKA "gear braking".

Never ever admit that here. It's the devils work and banned from discussion 😀

(Not only was I taught to gear brake and still do, I learned to double declutch and drive without a clutch).

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 31/12/2024 17:35

Can you not just drive slower?
Why do you need an app? You have a speedo, you have a brake and at some point you have passed a driving test.

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 31/12/2024 16:02

You just need to concentrate on the fucking road, including the speed limits Hmm

If you need a device to do your concentrating for you then tbh you shouldn't be driving at all.

It's not done on purpose! Sometimes, those of us less than perfect, are driving on unfamiliar roads, trying to navigate bus lanes, speed signs, satnav, the time, the traffic etc etc, and we lose our focus for a split second and might go five miles over. It's not like the op has been driving as if on a grand prix track.

How much were you above the speed limit? Usually they allow 10% +2

"Usually" is a weasel word and gives you fuck all recourse if you are done for 32 in a 30. A much better plan is to drive within the speed limit and rely on maths, not English.

CaptainBeanThief · 31/12/2024 18:08

You could just stop speeding that may help.

That isn't really the answer people like to hear though.

Absolutely not nowadays. Some areas have zero tolerance. Got done recently for 33 in a 30 in Bristol.

OP I really don't understand why you are still going over 30! Do you want to lose your job and driving licence??

I say this as someone who used to regularly have points on her licence.

Not something I'm proud of.

I've just done (another) Drivers Awareness Course and will spend the next 2 years like the Chauffeur from Driving Miss Daisy.

I have done 3 courses over the past 10 years. Unfortunately after 2 years I seem to lose my caution and end up speeding again.

In fact I am seriously thinking of asking if I can do a voluntary one in 2 years time so I don't fuck up again.

They are amazing. When I worked how much time I saved by going 85 miles an hour driving 600 miles (which I do a lot) as opposed to 70 miles an hour, it was fuck all. Maybe about 20 mins!! But I could save about £40 of fuel. (there and back)

Also seeing the damage a car does to a child at 20,30 and 40 miles an hour is worth googling.

So genuinely don't get why you're not checking your Speedo regularly! Unless you're a bit of a daydreamer in which case you DEF shouldn't be speeding.

Omg just realised I've become a bit evangelical! An ex-speeder! Like an ex-smoker!

Did you get your licence from a cereal box?

Sunnysidegold · 31/12/2024 16:04

My car has a limiter built in. I use it in 30mph areas mostly.

An app would work well for you I think. Seeing as you've been caught twice in the same place you'll probably be more likely to keep the speed low there.

Rotten luck in appealing 3 points but ending up with four!

Should have been given 6

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 31/12/2024 16:25

Waze will help.

I think people are being harsh as 33 in a 30 is so easy to do without realising it.

Obviously they all have their halos glittering when they drive!

And how would you feel if one of those 33mph drivers knocked over your child?
Be as sarky as you like about those who drive to the speed limit. At least they are less likely ti kill themselves or someone else, halo or not.

CandyLeBonBon · 31/12/2024 19:02

Use google maps. It has an accurate digital Speedo and I find it much easier to maintain the correct speed - especially as it changes when the roads change eg 30 to 20

It isn't a first offence. No excuse for this type of driving. One may as well be over the limit. What's worse, the OP drives for a living.
Disgusting

DogInATent · 31/12/2024 19:06

Hand in your keys if you need tech to abide by the speed limit.

10 pts isn't "Oops, sorry officer, didn't realise", it's a habit.

But seriously, pay more attention.

CandyLeBonBon · 31/12/2024 19:08

Also, try the app 'DriveScore' - it's like a telematics thing that tracks your driving and scores your driving out of 1000. I've found it good for helping me focus on being a better driver generally. I'm currently on a score of 941 out of 1000. Apparently anything over 750 can get you cheaper insurance but I e not tried that yet!

MumonabikeE5 · 31/12/2024 19:11

Maybe you should watch some road traffic accident videos, and speak to people who have lost people or been severely impacted by one .

so that you have a renewed respect for the vehicle you are in charge of.
and give it the active attention it requires.

I think it is a lost cause...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/12/2024 19:50

Are you sure you don't have cruise control/speed limiter @OP? I had it on a 2010 Skoda Fabia, with very few additional features other than wheels and a radio.

But also - Google maps picture friend here, assuming you have an in car smart phone interface thing.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 31/12/2024 19:53

On my old car (Ford Ka) you could set it up so that it beeped as a certain speed, when I got the car it was set to beep at 72mph but i could have changed it and set it to 30mph. It wouldn’t limit the speed but the beep would remind me to slow down if I was creeping over 70mph on the motorway. Not sure if it’s something other cars have, I don’t have it on my current car but haven’t tried to look for it either. Maybe check the manual on your car and see if there is anything like it.

Sadcafe · 31/12/2024 20:00

The real beauty of waze is that, as well as showing your speed and changing colour if you over the limit, it also warns in advance of speed cameras, static and mobile, though mobile does depend on someone reporting its presence

Marshbird · 31/12/2024 20:17

BertieBotts · 31/12/2024 16:02

Yes it's called a speed limiter. Not sure how you get them installed - maybe at a garage? But it probably won't be useful for 30mph zones, I think they just limit your top speed to 70 or whatever.

If 30mph zones are the issue then targeting 5 below might make sense.

Many cars that have cruise control have speed limiters. People don’t realise becuase apparently most people always hate them. Or just don’t know they have it. I’m not sure if it’s just something instructors don’t teach about?

i drive with speed limit on unless I’m using cruise control ALL the time. It’s bloody marvellous and I understand is becoming mandated in some countries. Roll on the day, for me, when speed limiter can set and adjust automatically becuase right now you have to set and adjust manually.

if you don’t know how it works, you simply switch on, often on same switch or toggle as cruise control, and set to your max speed for that road. No, a proper speed limiter doesn’t limit to 70, unless you choose that, you can set to any speed you want that is legal (I’ll do 20 if needed) . Or illegal speed for that matter 😳 Most have control on steering to toggle speed up or down as road limits change . If you try to go over this speed you’ll find a resistance that will prevent the accelerator reacting. BUT if you really need to you can push accelerator down hard beyond that to force higher speed, to say overt a collision. If you’re going downhill it will alert you if momentum takes you over that speed with an annoying regular ping. I’ve been driving my last 3 cars over last 18 years with these speed limiters. Renault, VWs, so common.

personally I like the control it gives, and the fact that I know I drive at safe legal and consistent speeds. But , right now it won’t help if you think you’re in 40 zone and you’re in 30. You need to read the road. Speed awareness course I did 20 years ago was good for that btw - shame you can’t go on one. Hence why I now drive on these controls.

I would also now invest in sat nav and drive with that all the time. That’ll tell you speed limit even where not quite obvious and will alert you to cameras. But you really shouldn’t need alerting to cameras 🤨.

I think on any modern car it’d not be difficult to retrofit a speed limitor with cruise control.

Adaptive cruise control is brilliant as well to maintain speed correctly , I drive with it all the time when reaching roads with minimal junctions and higher legal speeds. Very safe. Safer than driving manually, if on long drives where alpha mode constantly wants to occur. What I really notice is how much other drivers let their speeds go up and down on motorways, I’ll be cruising quite nicely at 70 behind someone for miles, then they slow to 65 when alpha mode kicks in, I’ll overtake, they’ll then speed up to 80 overtake me and piss around for next 20 miles. So much more relaxing if we’d just set a speed and let the car sort it out nicely for us all.

BoobyDazzler · 31/12/2024 20:20

I use Waze after picking up 3 points this time last year - a month after doing the speed awareness course! First time in 25 years. Dh has picked up 6 points this year, again having never had any in many year safe driving.

You can set Waze up to beep at you when you go over the speed limit and to warn you when there’s police/speed cameras/obstructions, etc. You can use it without setting a destination, it’s habit for me just to have it on now.

Don’t beat yourself up, shit happens.

Itsaswelltime · 31/12/2024 20:23

GPS like TomTom shows your speed and alerts if you’re over what it thinks is the limit. Perhaps same with Google Maps or WAZE type apps if you have your phone as a GPS.
