Is there a speed box thing that can be added to a car?? I now have 10 points!!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 15:54

Had the letters through last week to say id picked up 6 points. 3 points on two consecutive days at the same spot - one for 33mph and other for 35mph. I was hoping for the offer of a speed awareness course for one. But thats not an option.

Im worrying now as I drive for a living. And in January 2023 I picked up 3 points that i appealed and really lucked out and was given 4 points instead. I thought i had a genuine reason to appeal but obviously they thought otherwise. Fair enough.

It does mean i now have 10 points. Im not worried about the urge to speed, more about the occasions you realise you've slipped to 32mph or 33mph before correcting and if i'm unlucky that there's a speed camera there at the time. If i get another 3 points. Google says its a 6 month ban.

I wondered if there's a part, that you can get added to the car that controls speed??

Or should i target my speed to 5mph below he speed limits so that if i go a little above, im still below??

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

I suppose im asking how do i manage this rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

Newish cars have a camera at the front that picks up the road signs and shows the speed on the display. If you go faster, it flashes and beeps. E.g. Toyotas have this. Have you checked your car manual?

They're not 100% reliable though.

Obviously a car with a speed limiter would be ideal for the op - we had one in about 2006 which had this, they're not a particularly new idea. But imo another thing that's really helpful is if you can set your display to have a big digital readout of the speed

ChimneyRock · 31/12/2024 16:32

Agree with those who've mentioned watching your gears around town. At about the point you feel you need to switch to 4th gear is the point at which you're on around 30mph so practise taking a speed-check at that point (or maybe just before).

@CraftyNavySeal thanks i'll look at that

What car do you have? It may have a limiter already and you’re just not aware of how to set it.

People aren't being helpful. Op is asking if there is an app, a product, something she can use to help. Some have suggested Waze.
It would be helpful if anyone could suggest an app they use, or a device purchased from say Amazon that you can buy install and use.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 31/12/2024 16:34

Yes- it’s a fantastic thing called your foot but also something called a brain is very helpful!

Vibing · 31/12/2024 16:14

Thank you for all advice...

Is the Waze app a navigation system. I want to make sure i get the right thing?

Yes it is. Only really feasible to use daily if you have unlimited data on your phone though

frozendaisy · 31/12/2024 16:36

It is a ballache but if you haven't you will need to inform insurance about extra points or you might not be covered if you need it.

May09Bump · 31/12/2024 16:40

All the bmw's we've had, you could limit the speed - maybe called cruise control. I also believe WAZE informs you of changes in speed.

Obviously not great speeding - but well done for asking for help and sorting your driving.

I would say it's wrong at least 25% of the time, I also have the speed limits displayed on google maps and sometimes they're both wrong.

Speedo is probably reading nearer 37/38 if you were caught going 35

brbg2g · 31/12/2024 16:42

The thing that you can get to control the speed of the vehicle is you. 🤷🏻‍♀️ just don't speed.

MirandaWest · 31/12/2024 16:44

My DH suggests doing an advanced driving course as it can help you to not drive on auto pilot too much. He’s an observer with our local IAM roadsmart - an advanced driving course is around £200 and will help in all parts of driving.

Sunnysidegold · 31/12/2024 16:04

My car has a limiter built in. I use it in 30mph areas mostly.

An app would work well for you I think. Seeing as you've been caught twice in the same place you'll probably be more likely to keep the speed low there.

Rotten luck in appealing 3 points but ending up with four!

I knew someone who appealed they got enough points to take them to 12 and weren’t allowed to drive for 6 months and a stonking fine. He used to say things like “Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools” which didn’t go down well.

AlexanderArnold · 31/12/2024 16:44

I use a speed limiter religiously- you just adjust it using a button on the steering wheel each time the speed limit changes.

Coconutter24 · 31/12/2024 16:45

You can it’s called your foot! Concentrate on what you’re doing and you won’t speed.

Should I seek legal advice on how these things are appealed,in case im faced with a ban and then i feel pre prepared??

No, if you get more points you deserve the ban. A big thing of driving is concentration and focusing on what’s happening around you and if you can’t do that you shouldn’t be driving.

You say you drive for a living? Do you speed when working?

mathanxiety · 31/12/2024 16:46

Go back and get some lessons.

And learn to read your speedometer.

Sinkintotheswamp · 31/12/2024 16:53

In 30mph areas make sure you stick to 3rd gear, 28/29mph. Don't go up to 4th gear.

shellyleppard · 31/12/2024 16:55

Its called a brake pedal......😁😁 Seriously tho I think your plans of driving 5 miles under is a good one

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 31/12/2024 17:00

In a 30, I never go above 27.

But remember, the speed cameras are calibrated as most speedos are 5mph under your true speed. So if you were caught on camera doing 35, your speedometer actually read 40mph. So clearly you need to be better at watching your speed.

I have a 2012 car, so no cruise controls. I have to park in all types of areas and my previous car had wing mirrors knocked off, dents kicked in. I chose to replace it with a good old model which is a godsend. Doesnt attract the same attention. But it doesnt have cruise control.

Are you sure? We have a basic older car than that and it has cruise control. Have you checked the manual to be sure?

Galatine · 31/12/2024 17:12

I have just such box. It was issued at birth and is called a Mark 1 Eyeball, supplemented by the Mark 1 Brain. They are incredibly useful when driving!

MikeRafone · 31/12/2024 17:13

https://www.buyacar.co.uk/car-advice/what-is-a-speed-limiter/

get a speed limiter

Mustreadabook · 31/12/2024 17:20

Get your speedo calibrated. Legally they are ok if they are within 10% of the correct speed, but that then gives you no leeway if it is reading lower than you are actually going.

LivingOnTheVeg · 31/12/2024 17:24

Google Maps does a beep if you go over the limit, but my app always says I’m going slightly slower than my car does. I do have an old car so it’s quite possible the speedometer is wrong, but I would take whatever app/device you use with a pinch of salt and see how accurate it is compared to your car!

BlackSheepThisYear · 31/12/2024 17:25

You say you drive for work - are you 100% concentrating while driving? Or are you thinking about work, singing to the radio etc? It's easily done. Maybe try putting all distractions away - bags etc in the back, phone on silent so it doesn't make a noise and distract you, turn the radio off. Just really concentrate on where you are and how you are driving.

On what grounds would you appeal? If you have too many points as you’re unable to drive properly, you get banned. Straightforward.
