Not getting DD the one thing she's asked for for Christmas

I can't kick the guilt.

DD is 15, and has begged for an iPhone. She has a fairly decent android, and we're all on Android in the family. I have no clue about iPhones. I still have quite a lot of blocks and controls on her phone (a source of much tension), and wouldn't know how to maintain those on iPhone. Her reason for wanting an iPhone? The cameras on iPhones are so much more "compatible with social media" (i.e. - I assume? make you look better). It just doesn't sit right with me.

I've got her some clothes and make-up (she's really picky, though, so not a massive amount), and am going to give her some money to buy herself a new pair of trainers.

I've warned her she's not getting what she's asked for, but I know she's still hoping.

I just feel really bad about it. I'm not wrong, am I...?

@CrowleyKitten based on what? Just that she's asked for an Iphone?

based on the tendency to take cases off and leave a phone naked.

Tell her she can have a new phone when the one she has got is no longer working properly. Tech doesn't last forever, but can't have a new one just because its better.

You are being an excellent mum. You've thought about it & reached a decision. Good for you! Parenting isn't about being the genie of the lamp. It's so much more.

So Dd will be disappointed. That's a shame, but actually, it really doesn't matter that much. Life is like that. Disappointments happen and not just at Christmas.
Your confidence in your decision is what is important.

I would have got her it personally. Your reasons aren’t really justified IMO. It makes sense that she wants a better camera. I would be disappointed with clothes and makeup at her age

Weird take 😂

WendyA22 · 29/12/2024 10:43

She doesn't want it for the better camera does she? She wants it because all her friends have one.
My granddaughter is having the same argument about a drinks bottle costing £50, it's never ending.
My kids are 32 and 41 and and if I could do it all again they 100% wouldn't be getting everything on their lists.

And yet she's chuffed with OP's solution of an Android phone WITH a better camera.

Indeed.

it’s called playing the long game.

the ploy failed.

She isn’t getting the iPhone.

she can either accept that and gain credibility because it now looks like it wasn’t a ploy at all, or she can kick off and prove that it was.

the kid lost this battle, but in doing so made significant progress towards winning the next one, and the war

SusieLawson · 29/12/2024 14:03

She's too young to know what's best and that's android. Maybe it's different now, but when I first went online I still have flashbacks from images I saw and the weirdos who spoke to me and I was an adult.

Bugbabe1970 · 29/12/2024 16:55

If you can afford it then get it!
all my kids had iPhones at that age and as I was paying the bill I had no questions asked access to their phones whenever I wanted - hardly ever checked though as had no concerns

Bugbabe1970 · 29/12/2024 17:01

Ok I’ve seen your update - good outcome OP

?

It was supposed to be funny since parental control had swop horses for goats.....

BluesBird19764 · 29/12/2024 23:19

so the only reason you aren’t buying her the one thing her the one thing she asked for is because you aren’t comfortable with change?! Sorry but that’s rubbish.

CrowleyKitten · 29/12/2024 23:31

when she's older, and parental controls are less a concern, if it comes up again, set a budget, and work out what the best iPhone and the best android are in that price bracket, and compare specs.
you get so much more phone for your money with Samsung, so it's then up to her if she wants a better phone or the logo, but not as recent and high spec.
