Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

Hoovering will definitely get done as the floors look a mess after present opening with little bits everywhere. Cleaning the kitchen sides etc.... will be done over and over no doubt. I may stick a load of washing on if it's needed but I wouldn't be ironing or doing a full clean everywhere.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/12/2024 07:25

You mean as well as cooking a huge meal for 10 people with about 14 side dishes?

No

WillowTit · 21/12/2024 07:26

i wont do a wash,
i would hope not to clean the floors but who knows

Baconeggsandbeana · 21/12/2024 07:29

Yes. I will clear up as we go and take out the rubbish. Also probably a single wash load and the dishwasher. Maybe a quick lounge hoover after presents have been unwrapped in the morning.
It sounds a lot in a list but it's not really.

There’s always laundry to do everyday, a load of clothes, then another which may be towels, sheets, gym gear, pet bedding, cushion covers, mats. There is always s.

I get that laundry is generated each day - people wear clothes, at least the underwear will obv need washing, though most things can be easily worn more than once - but can’t it just go in the laundry basket and wait for a few days for a load to build up? Or for a big pile to build up and then be washed and sorted when you’re not all busy having a nice Xmas time?

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 21/12/2024 07:32

I wash daily 365 days a year, so I will wash if needed and other than that just emptying the bin/recycling into the big bins and sorting the kitchen.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 21/12/2024 07:34

We have a houseful of guests, all adult relatives who stay for at least two nights. We have slightly more guests than we really have space for. What I learned to do a few years ago was that, when the DC go for a nap, every adult spends 5 mins or so doing a very quick task whether that is hoovering the living room, scooping up all of the hand towels, bath mats etc and chucking them in the washing machine, emptying the bins or grabbing a packet of Dettol wipes and wiping around the downstairs cloakroom or main bathroom (for that matter, I have also learned to keep a pack of Dettol wipes and some rubber gloves in every bathroom). Them going up for a bath was another opportunity for a quick reset.
The DC are now teens

Mistletoeandwinegums · 21/12/2024 07:35

I will clean the kitchen after meals and put the bins out. If the weather is wet I will give the floor a quick wipe (we have dogs). Make my bed and wipe over the bathroom sink and loo. No extra housework will be done.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 21/12/2024 07:36

Pressed post too soon!
The DC are now teens so no longer nap but we still pick a moment and do a quick tidy. This year, I might do a load of clothes washing too as we're away on 26th and so it depends how organised I have been on Xmas Eve

LizzieSiddal · 21/12/2024 07:37

It makes me really sad to think women are spending time on Xmas day cleaning toilets. Have a bloody break for goodness sake!

i under how many men are doing the same?!

InCheesusITrust · 21/12/2024 07:45

My everything stops on 23rd.
Born elsewhere and I am not risking any bad luck by washing and hanging clothes on 24th, or sweeping or taking rubbish out...
Housework resumes on 27th (well sweeping and rubbish on 25th as needed).
It's a chilled 3 days which shall not be ruined by housework for me.

ribiera · 21/12/2024 07:45

I'll do what needs doing (clean a mess) and I might shove a load of laundry in the wash if it can go straight in the dryer but no hanging, folding ironing etc.

BeyondMyWits · 21/12/2024 07:52

MIL has mid to end stage vascular dementia (and Alzheimers etc). We will be doing laundry. Lots. Probably be crying in the toilet rather than cleaning it.

Christmas becomes just another day for a while. For many.

BruceAndNosh · 21/12/2024 07:53

I have been known to wash the kitchen floor twice on Christmas Day, just to get people OUT of the kitchen. There are some spoony fuckers in my family!

NoWordForFluffy · 21/12/2024 07:55

OfDragonsDeep · 20/12/2024 21:49

I wouldn’t clean the bathroom type job, but I’ll wash up, sort out a wash, run the hoover round

Same here.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 21/12/2024 07:55

God no. I don't do anything apart from cook. Husband and kids do the clearing, dishwasher etc. washing and ironing on Christmas Day?!

MumonabikeE5 · 21/12/2024 07:56

Yes go tidying the days mess, but yes I think you are a weirdo for doing laundry&ironing. A

BCBird · 21/12/2024 07:56

Do as u please. I u want to relax I would fo absolute minimum, with others chipping in

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 21/12/2024 07:59

Absolutely not. Wash up while cooking lunch and after, tidy away wrapping paper etc but that is all.

Nc546888 · 21/12/2024 08:03

This. I don't understand why people think toilets need cleaning every day. Just why?

Seeing as half of Mumsnet will be spending the entire weekend cleaning their house from top to bottom, it's really not going to need cleaning again in a few days.

Aliflowers · 21/12/2024 08:06

SWLondonLurker · 20/12/2024 23:47

There are 5 of us In the house so we can be 2 washing loads per day on a normal day.

I'm sorry, but what?! How is this even possible?

5 in our house too. Between sports kits, swimming stuff, bed clothes, towels, uniforms and 'normal clothes' I can easily do two washes a day

buybuysellsell · 21/12/2024 08:06

I don't iron the other 364 days of the year so no I wouldn't do that on Christmas Day.

As others have said, dishwasher only for me. Plus the inevitable running around after young DC. But no routine chores.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/12/2024 08:07

Hell no! We are away staying with family this Christmas, but when we are hosting I don't do any housework other than kitchen clearing up for a couple of days.

Christ0nABike · 21/12/2024 08:07

Well… turns out I must be a total slob, because sometimes I don’t do any housework for entire weekends, let alone needing to scrub and polish on Christmas Day.
