Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

Seeing as half of Mumsnet will be spending the entire weekend cleaning their house from top to bottom, it's really not going to need cleaning again in a few days.

Thats my thinking. The house needs a good clean after the last couple of weeks of busyness but I’ll not do anything substantial until next weekend (when I’ll clean for Hogmanay). I don’t understand how folk generate so much laundry that it can’t wait for one day, outside of toilet training/incontinence.

MidnightPatrol · 21/12/2024 08:08

I’ll probably do about 10 rounds of washing up as I cook and then after the meals!

Maybe more!

No time for any other chores.

eklaljdj · 21/12/2024 08:09

Absofuckinglutley not. We are away on holiday and will be back on Christmas Eve, it will kill DH not to touch the laundry but I've told him we are taking out the wash bags then rolling the suitcases into the garage to forget about until AFTER Christmas!!

Aliflowers · 21/12/2024 08:13

For us we have guests (DM plus DB and his family with young kids) so invariably someone spills ice cream on the floor or walks in some chocolate. We tend to clean as we go on the day so keep mess down. Im not ironing or anything (I dont any other time of year) but I literally couldn't sit and relax Christmas evening if we didn't do a quick clean. DH does it with me so its just a 20/30 min blitz. Then I go off and have a soak in the bath and into new PJs while he does the bins and empties the dishwasher

St Stephens day is our chill day so the last thing I want is to get up to sticky floors and a mess. That day we just chill. Its only our family so minimal mess and means other than the dinner and clean up after I dont do much that day

Iliketulips · 21/12/2024 08:22

Like many, I'll do washing up on the day itself. I usually hoover the day before, but if for some reason I really felt a couple of rooms needed doing again, I quickly hoover up the obvious bits. If any washing on airer from the day before that goes away, as airer is kept in our dining room. Maybe a five minute tidy before guests arrive.

MaltipooMama · 21/12/2024 08:24

That's an absolute no from me! 😅

We're going a houseclean and laundry on the Monday so everywhere is nice and tidy for the three Christmas days, on these days the only job that will be done is the washing up!

Give yourself a day off OP no housework on Christmas Day!

Alwaystired23 · 21/12/2024 08:41

No, no washing on Christmas day. It will just get in the way. I very rarely iorn, so that's not an issue. Basics will get done, such as washing the dishes and tidying the table. Nothing else. Might run the vacuum and have a general tidy up boxing day. We can't take leave over Christmas, so I'm not spending my days off doing housework. My cleaner is coming on Christmas Eve, so the house should be ok.

LynetteScavo · 21/12/2024 09:12

No, I'm too busy cooking, loading the dishwater and entertaining. The only time I would put a wash on is if someone had wet the bed or thrown up. There's no time for ironing!

squirrelnutcartel · 21/12/2024 10:14

Yes, I do the usual stuff that needs doing. I get bored just sitting around. It's just another day to me and we don't have guests and I work part of the day anyway.

MabelMora · 21/12/2024 10:22

Anyone who has a traditional Christmas - family over, eat loads, have a few drinks, play games and watch TV together - and does housework around that is a weirdo, yes, in response to OP.
Imagine everyone round the table setting up a new board game, and somemadwomanone pipes up 'Oh hang on, give me ten minutes, I've just got to clean the downstairs loo and put the washing in the tumble dryer.' Have a day off!

Upstartled · 21/12/2024 10:27

I do find <whispers quietly out of dh's earshot> housework quite grounding and soothing. So I can imagine why some people might relish bowing out of a bustling room of Christmas festivities now and then to empty a dishwasher or hang washing out in peace and quiet.

Not how it works in our house. The washing goes on / out before guests arrive and comes in when they're gone, or during a lull (the nana nap period!). Nothing gets interrupted by either DH or me if we choose to do domestic stuff (though washing is the limit, along with any essential washing up, we wouldn't do cleaning or bloody ironing!).

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2024 10:33

Other than tidying up the wrapping paper and after the dinner? Absolutely not. I'll have done some the day before to prepare, but no need to vacuum or do laundry on the day.

MumChp · 21/12/2024 10:38

No. Only stuff needed.

caringcarer · 21/12/2024 10:38

No I'm going to my DS on Xmas day and the only thing he'll let me do is make the gravy.

Taytocrisps · 21/12/2024 10:40

Just the bare minimum - cook breakfast, wash up after breakfast, pick up discarded wrapping paper and tidy away opened presents etc. I'm away then for the rest of the day. I'll wash up at my host's house (no dishwasher).

Can't imagine scrubbing bathrooms etc. but each to their own.

Crunchymum · 21/12/2024 10:47

Bare minimum (so it's literally just washing up / feeding us all) if we're home.

I actively make sure I don't need to do laundry or hoover or anything else on Christmas day. It's all done beforehand!!

ToomanyMilesAway · 21/12/2024 10:47

I would likely freshen up the downstairs loo. Upstairs they look after their own.,

FannyFernackerpants · 21/12/2024 10:48

I will:
Hoover
Clean bathroom
Repeatedly clean kitchen surfaces.
Dh will do any laundry that needs doing.
No ironing as I don't iron anyway.
I wouldn't want my home dirtier/messier on Christmas day than on the other 364 days of the year, it would feel weird.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 21/12/2024 10:55

I am doing all the 'deep cleaning' today, dusting, hoovering, skirting boards, bathrooms, washing, decluttering. The beds will get done tomorrow.

Christmas eve morning I'll do a quick hoover and wipe around.

Christmas day and boxing day, I will not do anything at all! Can't imagine neeeding to hoover or iron especially. I don't do these things every day anyway!

LittleBearPad · 21/12/2024 10:57

Why will deferring a load of laundry make the house messier? Presumably you have a laundry basket to hold it.

I guess this issue is avoided for me by the fact that I don’t hoover or clean my bathrooms every day anyway. So not doing it on Christmas Day wont make my house any dirtier than every other day of the year.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 21/12/2024 10:59

Clear up after dinner. Load and unload dishwasher. Late afternoon, when the others take the dog out, I'll do a swift whizz round the livingroom with the hoover and open the windows for a few minutes to freshen the air and make it nicer for the evening.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 21/12/2024 11:02

I'll tidy the kitchen, do the dishwasher etc.

Will hoover as cats will spread cat litter everywhere but other than that, no.

Ironing and laundry on Christmas day, really very sad to even be considering it.

TheYoungestSibling · 21/12/2024 11:04

Do what works for you. If we were home just us, we would clean up after ourselves (wrapping and recycling, kitchen and meals etc) and deal with any messes but otherwise no.

We do try to get everything shipshape in the days leading up to Christmas in terms of laundry etc.

We are away so will keep where we are staying nice, but no more than that.
